Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee in February of 2009, received the fourth face transplant performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in May. Doctors, led by Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, actually attempted a double hand transplant at the same time as the face transplant, which failed. Doctors didn't say what day the operation was done on to ensure the donor's privacy.
Face transplant recipient Dallas Wiens made a public appearance two months after a remarkable, life-altering surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital that gave him his face back. He lost all of his facial features in a 2009 accident in which he was burned by a high-voltage electrical line. He described feeling his new face:
