Caution! You are about to enter a no-hit zone! (Okay, there aren't literally zero hits. But, there are very few hits.) The sports team at Boston.com needs an O'Reilly-esque warning before allowing Red Sox fans to look at the David Ortiz Watch. Yes, you can relive each day of Big Papi's never ending struggle at the plate with this painful graph. Great. Thanks. We know there was a big hit for Papi last night, which means there were no dry eyes at Bostonist. This Bostonist couldn't resist that opportunity. Here's something for Sox fans.
Imagine, if you will, the plight of Orlando Magic fan and new Glen "Big Baby" Davis antagonist Ernest Provetti and his 12-year-old son, Nicholas. The pair took in Sunday night's Magic-Celtics game from courtside seats. They felt the breeze of sprinting players blow across their faces as the two teams battled it out for four quarters of play. They watched Davis sink the beautiful buzzer beater we've all watched countless times today.
So much for the idea that the thrilling shootout win over Buffalo would spark the Bruins. They followed up that great win with an official stinkeroo last night, turning a 3-2 lead into a 6-3 embarassing loss at the hands of the Panthers. Zdeno Chara, Glen Murray (yay!) and Marco Sturm scored for the B's, but then the defense broke down and Tim Thomas stopped looking like himself for a while. Bad news all around.

Here’s a novel idea: if a music scene wants to prove its relevancy through an award show, why doesn’t that scene put in some effort? Boston’s ties to regional, up-and-coming, and national talent were on clear display Saturday evening at the Orpheum Theatre, as the 2007 Boston Music Awards honored many a bold-faced musical name. Metal poster boys Killswitch Engage took home Act of the Year accolades, while critical darlings Lori McKenna and Martin Sexton...
Both the Herald and Globe wondered today about whether and why Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks was booed during a promotional appearance Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. Could it be that a stadium full of "red-blooded American football fans" (as the Herald's Inside Track ladies put it) actually booed any model, let alone a Victoria's Secret lass? Bostonist was there, and we heard all the boos. And much as we give credit to anyone speaking...
Manny Ramirez sure loves his cars. When he went on Leno, he seemed to want to talk about cars even more than the World Series. Putting car enthusiasts Manny Ramirez and Jay Leno together was risky because they might not have talked about the World Series at all. Fans got lucky, and the talk turned to baseball, but it might be safe to assume that Ramirez holds hot rods and baseball in similarly high...
We're sad to report that the NFL has determined there's no fire to go with the smoke. As sure as people were, and as hopeful as we were that it was true, the league has said there's no evidence that the Colts were piping in artificial crowd noise Sunday against the Patriots. CBS blames faulty equipment in the truck to explain why, at one point during the game, it sounded like a CD skipped, then...
The Globe headline read "Fans Erupt in Joy After Sox Comeback." The subhead read, "Police Arrest 12 After Victory." The Herald said that the arrest number was actually 26, and they came away from the scene with a few stories of aggressive police and skittish horses. It would appear that fans and police were able to coexist somewhat, although Bostonist has no idea why the BPD wouldn't let them take a few harmless pictures of...
Sox fans, the request has been made of you: dig out your reddest of red and wear it proud today. The Sox brass hit the television news airwaves on Friday and asked you to show the Red Sox that you're behind them - and show the Indians that in order to get to the World Series, Cleveland is going to have to get past our team AND our fans on our turf.
--More on the man who was shot to death early Sunday morning on New Whitney Street. The Globe reports that he was 22-year-old Shawndel Mitchell. Mitchell was a dancer and a Harry Potter fan. He attended the Boston Arts Academy and was taking courses to be an EMT. The Metro spoke with friends who called him a "superstar." He is Boston's 53rd homicide victim this year. --Early this morning, two people died and four people...
The following contains spoilers about last night's episode of America's Next Top Model. Stop reading if you TiVoed it and haven't yet watched. Yes, we watch it. We've watched all eight previous cycles. We have a soft spot in our hearts for the crazy Tyra Banks. We're America's Next Top Model Fans. Because we're so wise in the way of reality fashion television, Bostonist knew that Boston girl Mila, 20, wasn't long for the...
Fans of the local Boston music scene always have an abundance of tunes to be able to check out, given the ever-deepening pool of area talent and multitude of venues. Usually, things work out in the listeners' favor: one can't miss band one night, another the next.
Eric Gagne, the reliever recently acquired by the Red Sox, hasn't exactly been burning up the field. Fans have been grunting and growling, and one fan in particular communicated his frustration Friday night by throwing a water bottle at the pitcher when Gagne muffed while playing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Cooling fans in T stations! Hooray! Next step: Febreeze. In today's Globe, Mac Daniel reports that the MBTA will start installing "special cooling fans"* in T stations across its service area this month. They're even going to put misting fans at a few of the busier bus hubs. Check out the Globe's map to see if your favorite subterranean stank hole is on the list! Meanwhile, the Herald is totally harshing our T lovin’ buzz...
This Sunday Project Bread's Walk for Hunger takes over the streets of Boston, Newton, Watertown…oh, you get the picture. The walk starts in the morning and thousands of people will be walking to raise money to support food banks, soup kitchens, and other initiatives across the Commonwealth. There are lots of good shows going on this week – and it's capped off with a weekend extravaganza that includes both Arts First and Harvard Square's...
Trot Nixon has moved on to the Cleveland Indians for a $3-million-dollar contract. Seems like the Sox put him to pasture: "Nixon had repeatedly expressed a preference to remain with the Sox, even as a series of injuries severely curtailed his production the last three seasons."
Yesterday a myspace bulletin was at the top of the ticker when we logged in: 123 Party! Arrested!!! Hey Fans and Party Favors-- 123 Party! was arrested on Friday, January 5th, 2007 for dancing on Boylston Street. The Boston Cops provided no sympathy and severely doubted the dance. Turbo, Sonic, and Fury (The new Boston trio) were thrown in cells without any 80's synthpop dance tracks. It was totally bogus. We need you!! To write...
Does signing to a major label change everything? Many longtime fans of the Portland, Oregon-based band The Decemberists wondered if the group's decision to sign with Capitol Records to release their fourth full-length album would serve to tone down everything that drew indie fans to them in the first place: the quirky lyrics, the range of song subject matter (from prostitutes to mariners), and the group's unabashed fondness for obscure literary and historical allusions. The...
This weekend both NEMO and the Beantown Jazz festival will be taking place in town. NEMO is a showcase for New England artists, a networking opportunity for the little-known and the big fish. The performances will invade, occupy, and entertain at just about every venue in Boston. It's a great opportunity to see your favorite local band – or discover a favorite you never knew you had. It's a whole lot to take in,...
For those who love reality television, you are most likely familiar with the FOX series, "Trading Spouses", where two “couldn’t be more different” families swap the mothers for a week to see what happens when mothers stop being polite and start getting real. One recent episode had the fathers so riled up over one another's spouses that a table was thrown with shouts of "You're going to kill him. Stop it!" in the background. (Riveting, right?) So when this posting popped up today on craigslist’s “creative gigs” section, Bostonist had to give those Fox Television execs some credit. While they might have misstepped by killing off Mischa Barton's character on "The O.C." recently, FOX might be onto something good here:
The baseball gods smiled down on Bostonist and graced us with a ticket to attend the first game of the season at Fenway Park. The mood around the park was exhilarating and obviously upbeat. Fans were hanging out at every single bar down Lansdowne, laughing, eating, and getting numb prepared for the first pitch at Fenway. At around 1:30 pm the mounting cheers from inside the park signaled to all fans that the Opening Day festivities were starting, and they began their mad dash to their respective seats. Bostonist made it into the park by way of Gate B near the bleachers and worked our way to the other side, all the while taking some photos and checking out the newly completed work to old Fenway Park.
Show me the MONEY! That seems to be the theme of the 2006 off-season of the New England Patriots. This week alone, the Pats lost 2 mainstays of their Dynasty, losing Willie McGinest to old friend Romeo Crennel and the Cleveland Browns, and a day earlier David Givens to the Tennessee Titans. 5 Super Bowl rings just walked out the door... and the predominant question on Bostonist's mind is: "Why"? Well, before we go crying...
Say yes to the Red Sox, New York. Gotham's City Council passed a law which will impose jail time and up to $25,000 in fines on fans who throw things on the playing field during a game. We’ve got a soft spot for the boys of Yawkey Way, and when they’re working on a historic four-game comeback to win the ALCS and getting pelted with debris from the stands, Bostonist is apt to get...
Where does one begin to look back on a week that was probably the most wrought with drama fans in New England, and expats around the world, have seen since Jason Varitek shoved his catcher's mitt in A-Rod's blue-lipped mug. There are no sub-plots, no subtleties interwoven among a more prominent narrative - the past week has been something more akin to reading a half dozen novels simultaneously.
