Boston City Council: The four winners in the at-large race were incumbents Michael Flaherty, Stephen Murphy, Sam Yoon, and new arrival John Connolly. Incumbent Felix Arroyo didn't make the cut. Now Murphy and Connolly will need to figure out how to live with each other after Connolly's anonymous mailers, which accused Murphy of always looking for other jobs. Michael Pahre at Brighton Centered reports that Mark Ciommo defeated Greg Glennon for the District 9 slot... more ›

Boston residents have two elections today--one for District 9 (Allston-Brighton) and one for the at-large city council position. Here's the rundown by District: District 3: Michael Cote is running against incumbent Maureen Feeney. District 4: J.R. Rucker is running against incumbent Charles Yancey. Those working for the candidates who want Boston's four at-large councilor spots are engaged in the typical mudslinging--but with a twist. Dave Wedge reported that someone sent anonymous fliers slamming incumbent Stephen Murphy for using the position as a stepping stone. (Look, what politician doesn't use a post as a stepping stone?) The anonymous flier story swiftly gathered speed, and Adam at Universal Hub noticed similarities in the anonymous flier and another flier sent out... more ›

If you're in East Boston, it's time to vote for State Representative of the First Suffolk district, the seat vacated by Anthony Petruccelli when he won a State Senate spot. Here are the candidates, all Democrats: Carlo Basile - Basile is officially a Democrat, but he is more of a moderate - or an undercover elephant - in that he endorsed Romney in the past and worked for Kerry Healey's failed attempt to be governor.... more ›

We missed it last week when BostonNOW published a story about a city ordinance proposed by City Councilor Chuck Turner to outlaw the sale of crack pipes in convenience stores. Yeah, that's right, prohibit the sale of crack pipes. Massachusetts already has pretty strong laws against the sale of drug paraphernalia. The restrictions force prices up in those Boston area stores that do stock those odd looking tobacco delivery devices, and local college students to... more ›

The Boston Globe reports today on an initiative by some local Latin American groups that is gaining support among some city officials. The City is considering renaming a portion of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain "Avenue de las Americas. At-Large City Council member Felix Arroyo, and Boston's first Hispanic council member, was named in the report as a supporter of the proposal. The idea is to give recognition to the portion of Centre Street between Jackson Square and Hyde Square to reflect the Latin American culture that is now in the majority in that area. Local shops, from bodegas and restaurants to record stores and clothing shops are owned by ethnic Latin Americans. The City's Main Streets program has begun to refer to the area as "the Latin Quarter." But some are hoping for official recognition in the form of a renaming of the street to reflect the culture of the area. more ›

The little Cuban place that could is still poised to make a come back. City Councilors Hennigan and Tobin were on the scene in July after El Oriental on Centre St. in Jamaica Plain had apparently been firebombed. Bostonist has walked by longingly these past few months waiting for the place to be rebuilt. An outpouring of support from the local community through cards posted to the plywood covering the exterior to donations made at a benefit concert will help to reopen one of our favorite Cuban restaurants. more ›

Bostonist loves political theatre, whether of the absurd-but-meant-to-be-serious sort or the absurd-for-absurdity's-sake sort. An upcoming event next month fits squarely into the latter category: The Riverside Theatre Works in Hyde Park is hosting a talent show for Boston's mayoral and city council candidates. The Globe reports today that many local notables will, indeed, participate: Felix Arroyo will sing Sinatra, Kevin McCrea will twirl a baton while telling jokes (?), and Mumbles will read poetry, promising to make some unknown poet a star on the strength of his oratorical skill. Really. What the Globe doesn't report, strangely, is the time, date, or location of the event. Luckily, Bostonist is here to help: It will be at the Riverside Theatre Works' home base (45 Fairmount Ave. in Hyde Park) on Sunday, September 26, at 6:00 p.m., with an elbow-rubbing reception beforehand at 5:00. more ›
