Dozens of college students were evacuated around 2:30 a.m. from a building on the corner of Hemenway Street and 90 Westland Avenue, referred to as Cappy's Corner by the Globe, after a fire broke out. Boston firefighters, who are still investigating the cause, said flames started in a basement laundry room before spreading quickly to the roof. Boston police broke up a brawl at Who's on First on Yawkey Way around 1:45 a.m. and arrested three men, one each from Roxbury, Cambridge, and Dorchester, for multiple charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer.

When we looked at the lineup set for Monday night's game between the down-and-almost-out Red Sox and the see-you-in-October Rays, we felt badly for those who'd plunked down cash for tickets. Sure, seeing Rocco Baldelli back at Fenway was going to be special, but a lineup chock full of rookies against a hot AL East team? That's just cruel and unusual punishment for the fans - perhaps worse than the way the Sox put their minor league squads on full display after the guys clinched a playoff spot last season. As Nick Cardafo put it pre-game: "You can pretty much tell now, based on the Sox lineup, that the end has come."
First, Steven Tyler fell and Aerosmith almost fell apart. Now it's Joe Perry's turn. A retired grandmother (isn't there a law about, umm, mature drivers?)crashed into Perry and his stalled Ducati motorcycle in Middleboro yeterday. Buy American, next time. Joe's fine, and already home with a sore back, according to his people. The granny, who is fine, did get cited in the accident. She reportedly didn't recognize Perry. He reportedly didn't get all I'm-Joe-Perry on the driver or any of the responders. If you've got tickets for the August 14 show at Fenway, that show is unaffected by the crash. [Herald]
There are many things you can - and probably have - said about the 2010 Boston Red Sox. They're unfamiliar/quieter/more boring than rosters past. They were built around the concept of run prevention, yet are more well known for run generation. The pitching manages somehow to be both shaky and dominating at the same time. There's your evolution of David Ortiz and the rise of Daniel Nava. And as of late, there's the fact that the team seems remarkably prone to injury (see: the Pedroia/Buchholz/VMart weekend injury extravaganza).
Great photo by photographynatalia. Solid composition (any time you see oversized bowling pins, take pictures), dramatic sky, and we like the sense of movement. Our eyes are drawn in along the red railing, fixed to the center on the red-gloved pins, and then led out with the woman on the frame's left side.
Props to photographer Mike Cialowicz for braving the cold during yesterday's Photo Walk and managing to get quite a few nice shots around Fenway. Click on his image above, which will take you to his Flickr page, and then scroll down to see more pictures.
If the thought of huge holiday meals has you looking for smaller dishes to tide you over between parties, Burtons Grill has a new bar menu to keep your stomach and your wallet full. Each plate is priced at $4.95 and holds a generous serving. Two plates would definitely make a decent meal.
It was a dismal weekend of violence in Boston that ended with two dead, including a pregnant teenager.
We know how Fenway's wild turkeys can ruin your day, but what about Fenway's hipsters? If you have a plot in the Back Bay Fens Victory Garden, you might have already had it with them. Mike Mennonno explains:

Will Cady has posted a review of Phish's recent show at Fenway. The heaviness of the music took him away from it all, making him dance and even "stop worrying about the OD’d guy I saw on the ground on my way in" (eek, let's hope that dude was okay). Trey and company came out of the Sox dugout singing the “Star Spangled Banner” and "played the audience like an instrument," commanding the attention of Phishheads parkwide. Phish fans who missed the show or want to remember it forever can download the concert online. Anyone else make it to the show and have a review?
Red Sox Monsterpointed us to this video of a fan getting freaky at Fenway yesterday. He is certainly dancing with himself... and the people trying to pull him away... in front of thousands of people... Well, there's nothing to lose, and there's nothing to prove, we suppose.
Ah, Opening Day in New England: sunshine peeking through the clouds on a Monday morning, happy smiling faces beneath Red Sox caps and above baseball jackets and shirts. We were a cautiously optimistic people hoping that the reports were wrong, the speculation was unfounded, that Fenway Park would open its doors and welcome the lucky 37,000 in...
For film Friday this week we found a great photograph by The.D80.Project taken with his Holga. This multiple exposure pic shows scenes from around Fenway park and although taken only last year, the Holga gives it a feeling of an era gone by.
Bostonist is still in shock because of yesterday's four alarm fire on Peterborough Street in the Fenway that wiped out an entire block of independent restaurants. The damage? Thornton's, Sorento's Italian Gourmet, Umi Japanese Restaurant, Greek Isles, Rod-Dee Thai Cuisine II, El Pelón Taqueria, and Bon cleaners, a dry cleaning shop. Firefighters say that the fire traveled quickly and horizontally through the strip of single-story businesses, spreading through the hazardous roof air conditioning units.
Bostonist's favorite local fish tacos were among the casualties when a 4-alarm fire ripped through Peterborough St. in the Fenway last night, burning several businesses, including beloved taco shop El Pelon, to the ground. 100 families were evacuated from their homes as firefighters put out the blaze. Damage from the fire is expected to reach $5 million. Two firefighters slipped on the ice, but no additional injuries were reported. [WBZ; Globe]
Gregg Snyder captures a miniature urban drama.
-- A pair of young louts in tight, black jeans were arrested on Medford St. in Somerville Friday morning, after a drunken car break-in, police say. The alleged booty: a $300 iPod, Arcade Fire and ironic 90s dance music presumably included. [Somerville Journal]
According to WalkScore.com, Boston is America's third most walkable city, behind San Fran and NYC. The city ranking system is slightly unclear, but appears to be based on averages of neighborhood walkability, or perhaps numbers of most walkable neighborhoods. Walk Score says Boston's best areas for walking are the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, and the South End. Somewhat ironic that a wonderful walking city is in massive transportation debt.
