With health care reform looming, everyone's worried about how to cut costs. When everyone's insured, won't premiums go through the roof? One way to fight freaky fees is to keep patients out of the hospital once they've been in. The Berkshire Medical Center is trying exactly this in a program designed to cut down on hospital patient recidivism. Among the tips and tricks used are encouraging heart patients to avoid hot dogs, which are so full of sodium that they can promote fluid retention and trigger heart trouble. Staying frank-free is harder than you might think, though, especially around Independence Day: this July 4, one Berkshire Medical patient chowed down on a dog; she was back in the Center the next day.

An Ohio man stole nearly 1000 bottles of ketchup that were intended for Fenway Franks. Monday's rainout may have saved us from a ketchup-free fate. But, since cutting out condiments can help you lose weight, maybe the thief was just trying to help us slim down.
For those who love reality television, you are most likely familiar with the FOX series, "Trading Spouses", where two “couldn’t be more different” families swap the mothers for a week to see what happens when mothers stop being polite and start getting real. One recent episode had the fathers so riled up over one another's spouses that a table was thrown with shouts of "You're going to kill him. Stop it!" in the background. (Riveting, right?) So when this posting popped up today on craigslist’s “creative gigs” section, Bostonist had to give those Fox Television execs some credit. While they might have misstepped by killing off Mischa Barton's character on "The O.C." recently, FOX might be onto something good here:
Apparently it isn’t enough that there is a Dunkin’ Donuts on nearly every block around Boston, and in some cases two. Two new Dunkies are set to open at Fenway Park.
Fenway faithful waited 86 years for a Red Sox championship. Today, another long wait is over, as Red Sox fans and all visitors to Fenway Park can now finally enjoy a cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee at Red Sox home games and other Fenway events… "Just as visits to Fenway Park are a way of life in New England, so too are visits to Dunkin' Donuts," said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino.True dat Larry, double true. Bostonist is a little skeptical about is the assertion that we’ve been waiting for Dunkin' to make an appearance inside the ballpark, and equating it with the 86 year drought. It would be great if they would sell beer to us after the 7th inning or if the Fenway Franks tasted as good as when we were kids, but truthfully we haven’t once thought “man I wish I could go to Gate B and get myself a TurboIce right now.
It looks like Bostonians have been celebrating the Sox win with too many Fenway Franks this past year...According to Men's Fitness Magazine's annual "25 Fittest Cities" survey, Boston dropped from #7 to #11. Okay, so it wasn't a huge drop but the mag points out that we spend lots of time in traffic and complaining about finding a gym to use. On the bright side, Bostonians have clean air and few fast food joints to temp us. So, let's work on this kids and crack the top ten again in 2005. At least we beat out our friend, Gothamist and its beloved New York City, who ranked #8 in the "25 Fattest Cities" survey.
