Bostonist has finally thawed out from a chilly Saturday night in Harvard Square, site of the Le:60 Film Fest. Like Marco Polo returning from China, we come laden with tales of the wonders we witnessed. (Unlike the Italian, we also bring back some photos.)

We love YouTube here at Bostonist. But let’s be honest: serious short-film artists looking to get exposure typically get buried in a sea of RickRolls. All hope is not lost, however; tomorrow night in Harvard Square from 5:30-10, the first annual Le:60 Film Fest will showcase nearly 100 artists who compressed their best ideas into films just one minute long.

Lumen Eclipse is hosting a 1-minute film festival on September 27, and currently seeks submissions for the fest. The deadline is August 15 to submit a high-quality original film no more than 60 seconds long. Full submission details are here. If you've been complaining about how long a film takes to make, maybe you can start your film career on a small scale by entering. As Lumen Eclipse puts it, "If big films are the cathedrals of today, we're looking for your take on what a tiny and beautiful shrine might look like." Amen.

Some super-snazzy stuff is going on around Boston this week in the film world. The African Film Festival at the MFA is going strong, and Harvard Film Archive brings us José Luis Guerín's In the City of Sylvia (En la ciudad de Sylvia) with the director live and in person. (Sometimes we wonder what the point of saying "live and in person" is--would we really go to an event with someone dead and in person? We think that's called a funeral. Anyway.) The Brattle warms up for Valentie's Day with the kooky love story of Harold and Maude, and the Coolidge brings us a set of short films that screened at Sundance in 2007.

--The State Supreme Judicial Court just overturned the conviction of a Methuen ex-police officer accused of raping a woman in 2000. The case hinged on whether or not lawyers could prove the woman was "too intoxicated to consent, not that she was merely high and drunk." However, the SJC felt that the trial judge didn't give proper instructions to the jurors. The ex-officer will get a new trial. [Boston Globe]

There is no public institution that inspires Bostonist with so many warm feelings as the public library. And there is no charity event quite like a library book sale to make Bostonist into a heartless marauder, fighting tooth and nail with no quarter given nor expected. Unlike the Top 10 Most Commented stories, the top 10 favorites represented a selection of all the fun, the playful, and just plain odd that this city has to offer.
