We were pretty big fans of The Price of Loyalty, Ron Suskind's book about George W. Bush's first treasury secretary, Paul O'Neil, and the first media source to really question the run-up to the Iraq War. So we were extremely excited to see that Bush's last treasury secretary, Hank Paulson, had written a memoir. Not because we were expecting a tell-all account of the real origins of the Bear Stearns sale, TARP, TARF, and all the other acronyms that came to define the crisis, but rather because On the Brink heralded the emergence of a new and great literary genre: books by and about former Bush treasury secretaries. Bostonist had heard all sorts of things blamed for the shortage of this cocktail staple: bottling mishaps, distribution issues, politics, and, shaking a fist in the direction of Brooklyn, the recent fad of formulating beverages that contain whole ounces of bitters per serving.
If you've never been, get to Brandeis' Rose Art Museum as soon as you can: the art is for sale and the museum is set to close soon. The school is selling the works in order to raise money for continued operations; as our inside source at Brandeis described it, the school's financial situation is "wicked bad." Brandeis president Jehuda Reinharz puts it a bit more mildly, saying "These are extraordinary times," with the school facing a possible budget shortfall of $10 million. Brandeis has already implemented a hiring freeze and is considering some other radical measures, such as requiring students to take summer courses.
