Photo of the Day, January 30, 2009: Stata Center at Night

We had to do a double take at this image from photosbyfletch. It reminds us of a nice warm mid-winter day after a snowfall, but it was actually taken at night! A 59 second exposure gives us a great example of what can be done with a little patience and a good eye for photography.

Jeff Tamagini also took some super photos of the Head of the Charles Regatta yesterday. If you missed yesterday's event, here's what it looked like. Today's last races start at 4, so you still have plenty of time to get down to the river before it's all over. (Side note: We're pretty sure we saw some of Jeff's photos on the walls at Lower Depths while watching the game there last night. Head there tonight if you'd like some art to accompany your baseball and beer.)

Here's a slideshow of awesome Head of the Charles photos taken by our pal Paul Keleher on Flickr. Get the race results from the event website.

Flickr this week added a short video feature to the site and there has been a bit of an uproar against it in the Flickr photo community. Our friend Chris Seufert, who also happens to be a documentary producer, tried out the new feature with this clip of clamming on Monomoy Island. What do you think of the addition of video to the site?

Update: The DA's Office just sent out confirmation. They say both stabbings happened on the outbound platform and that the stabbing victims are expected to survive.

--So, just how many new construction jobs will the casinos proposed by Governor Deval Patrick create? He said 30,000. An independent analyst says no way: "... building three casinos at a cost of $1 billion each in Massachusetts would create a total of 4,000 to 5,000 new construction jobs for the duration of the building period, probably three years." [Boston Globe]

--Some of those who treated the Big Dig like one big, fat ATM are finally getting their just desserts. Yesterday, a Big Dig contractor was charged with trying to overcharge the government by $300,000. They've agreed to plead guilty. [Boston Globe]

--The state owes snow plow operators $69 million for their work. Now that's a way to thank them for keeping our roads clean. The state has already--ahem--plowed through its snow-plow budget due to the abundance of snow this year. Sorry. Couldn't resist. [Boston Globe]

Unfortunately the world of vegan gourmet dining is a small one, with most restaurants concentrated in the Veg-friendly cities of New York, San Francisco, and Portland.

On the way out of the TDB Garden last night, we weren't completely thrilled about the Celtics' victory over King James and the Cavaliers last night. It was a kind of sloppy game, Paul Pierce was way off-target all night, and the effects of jet lag were obvious. Then we stopped for a second and remembered where this team was a year ago. In one season, we've gone from plummeting towards ignominy, to beating the Eastern champs while clucking about aesthetics. We'll take that deal.

--Someone found violent messages in women's bathrooms, along with the date of February 28 (tomorrow), at Bridgewater State. Given recent violent incidents on college campuses nationwide, the school boosted security. Police are offering a $500 reward to find out who did it. [Boston Globe, Boston Herald]

--The Executive Director of the Turnpike Authority wants to CharlieCard everything so that you can use your card at the tolls. While we're all for not having to save spare change, automation might make it easier to miss fare hikes. [Boston Herald]

Be warned, Starbucks addicts and people who like free bathrooms: The coffee shop will be closed tonight between 5:30 and 9:00 for an emergency training of its employees, or "baristas," as they are known.
