Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said he's on Brockton's side when it comes to where the World Boxing Council should put a statue of Rocky Marciano--and it worked. The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that it will erect a statue of Marciano in Marciano's hometown of Brockton after initially announcing it would be in Boston--much to Brockton's chagrin. The Globe reported that Mayor Menino and Brockton mayor James E. Harrington got in touch with WBC president......

During a conversation about the flood of movies shooting in Boston, a member of b0st0n LiveJournal linked to video of Diaz shooting The Box. The LiveJournal members also debated what a dumb title of a movie that is. Besides the obvious porn connotations, The Box is too vague. Does the box belong to anyone? Is it big? Is it small? We need an adjective here, people! The Patriot Ledger posted a YouTube video of The......

So many big court cases went down this week, so we're wrapping up the latest. --The first witness testified Tuesday in the Franklin Park Zoo Amok Ape Trial, which will determine the amount that will be awarded to a 2-year-old girl was attacked by an ape in 2003. The girl's mother, Terrasita Duarte-Scott, is suing Zoo New England because her daughter was injured and probably has a flood of nightmares thanks to the episode. Courtney......

--Forget Kate Hudson and Steve Martin. Richard Simmons stopped by Fox 25 this morning and would not stop hogging the camera. If you wanted to watch the news or the weather, Richard Simmons was there, talking about the weatherperson's "biscuit" (she's pregnant) or running in front of the camera. VB looked a little frightened by the whole thing, if you ask us. Don't be surprised if you see Simmons sweatin' to the oldies on the......

Ah, the New York/Boston debate. While many point their fingers at Boston for stoking the flames on a regular basis (chants of "Yankees Suck" heard everywhere might have something to do with it), we can now point a little of the blame back to NYC. Gawker, having decided that they'd chastised Britney Spears' parenting techniques enough, shocked readers across the globe today by turning its typically New Yawk-centric eye beyond the boroughs. But, in characteristic......

This time, it's personal. Sean Linehan, the son of brand-new City Council member Bill Linehan, has told police he was the victim of random violence. He said that, after a late-night meal at Teriyaki House following his dad's victory party, he "accidentally walked into a brawl on the sidewalk." He was stabbed in the upper back, which "pierced his lung and broke a rib." And his father is starting his City Council term royally pissed......

Not all clouds are cute little cotton puffs. Here's a photo of low-hanging clouds that made Boston look like a winter night – at about 3:30 pm this afternoon. We just went to the National Weather Service website, which provides the latest updates. As of 3:41, "the severe thunderstorm warning for central Middlesex county has been cancelled … wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour and heavy rains can be expected through 4:30 pm."......

--Two school buses crashed into each other yesterday afternoon in Allston. It wasn't a fender bender - 22 people were hurt. It was a chain-reaction event started by a pickup truck that hit the brakes, causing the school bus behind it to hit the brakes. Then another school bus rear-ended the first bus, turning students into projectiles. The Globe says that a block bus drivers use to lodge under the wheels somehow got under one......

Monologuist Mike Daisey's performance of "Invincible Summer" at ART's Zero Arrow was interrupted Thursday night when an 87-member group stood and walked out of the performance space. During the walk-out, one member of the group approached Daisey's performance table and destroyed the outline the performer uses to tell his nightly tale, Daisey told Bostonist on Friday. Daisey posted to both the ART blog and his official website on Friday with a recap of what unfolded:......

Lately, the flood of technology has dumbed down filmmaking. It seems as if anyone with a budget can churn out a decent-looking CGI flick starring a bunch of smartass animals. Real artistry emerges when filmmakers get back to basics, which director Sean Meredith has done in a major way. First, Meredith and his collaborators have turned to Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy as the script for their movie. Second, instead of turning to computer animation, Meredith......

Didn't we just run a post about the molasses flood that struck the North End? And a post on the water main that burst in the neighborhood? What is it about the North End that attracts not just isolated incidents but grand, sweeping moments of destruction? In the North End, you don't just have a fire that strikes an apartment or two. You get a tremendous six-alarm blaze that destroys an entire complex. Last night,......

Stephen Puleo will be reading from Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm. He'll be in the English lounge of Wheatley Hall on the U-Mass-Boston campus. Forget what you know about molasses - molasses is fast, as North End residents discovered on January 15, 1919. The story isn't told as often as it should be - a tank full of 2.3 million gallons of molasses fell and burst......

Mix the headline "State House full of leaks after water pipe bursts" follow that up with the lead paragraph "Some say politicians are all wet - and at the State House yesterday even the pols agreed" and what do you get? The flood damaged office walls and office equipment of several legislators located on the fourth floor of the historic building,......

The MBTA made a bold marketing move in branding the new fare cards. Bold, but perhaps brilliant. Before the CharlieCard, before the CharlieTicket, all passengers have is the MBTA to blame. Now riders simply raise their fists and curse Charlie (think Shatner screaming "Khaaan!") the MBTA isn't scapegoat - it's the new cartooned mascot. A mascot who was taken from the verse of a song about a guy who was stuck on the T because......

We'll call it hit or miss. Some weeks are totally on and our agenda's are filled to the brim with great stuff. Some weeks we're pulling together a bunch of shows and thinking that the list of "go see" music is surprisingly spare. Just like the weather is wonderful an warm some weeks and gloomy others. This week we've collected a number of selections that will bring some sunshine to your gloomy day - or......

Last week the teams-named-for- historical-episodes battled it out in Foxboro, and the New England Revolution put Chicago’s Fire out. Bostonist was left thinking to ourselves wouldn’t it have been hilarious if the “molasses flood” put the fire out. Well, that and it’s like the World Series of soccer. Well, almost the World Series of soccer, if we discount the World Cup, Euro Cup, the European Premier leagues, the South American leagues, and just about any......

After seriously almost being knocked over in the wind tunnel in front of the John Hancock tower this lovely Tuesday morning, Bostonist just wants you all to be careful out there. After pummeling our newest friends in Florida yesterday, Hurricane Wilma has decided to pay us a visit up north and brought some of her friends. Similar to "The Perfect Storm" of 1991, which had three storms combining into one big massive one, the storm......

If you happen to be near the World Trade Center Wednesday or Thursday morning, you will likely see a mass of clean-cut but burned-out-looking folks in their mid-twenties clutching clear, one-gallon Ziploc bags and looking nervous. These are the foolish youngsters who have shelled out $815 (!) for the privilege of taking the Massachusetts Bar Examination, all of whom are motivated, Bostonist is sure, by a heartfelt desire to better the Commonwealth, lack of fiscal......

Bostonist would like to ask: What the hell is up with the weather? Being New Englanders, we can all expect the weather to throw us some curve balls here and there, but this is getting ridiculous. Does the sun not shine in the Hub anymore? After this past weekend being another washout, making it the fifth in a row, Bostonist was hopeful that things would turn around before the long holiday weekend. Well, according to......
