Doug Flutie, Heisman Trophy Winner, NFL Pro-Bowler, CFL legend, and the man who put Boston College football on the map, has retired after 21 years (yes, twenty-one) of professional football.

From the Hail Mary pass tossed in 1984 for Boston College, to his signing with the Bears, then back home with the Patriots where he belonged - well, until he went up north and played for the Canadian Football League, Doug Flutie has been on the Boston sports radar. In 1998 he came back down to the States (not too far south) playing for the Buffalo Bills. He then signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2001. After being the oldest starting QB in NFL history, Flutie had been relegated to second string duty for the Chargers. So he came back home. Calling Natick home since age six, Flutie signed with the Pats, the home team, in 2005 to become backup for Tom Brady. On January 1, 2006 Flutie scored an extra point against the Dolphins with a drop kick, something not accomplished since 1941. Today, after only a season back with the Pats, Flutie announced his retirement from professional football at age 43.

Well, that wasn't as fun as Bostonist remembers it. There is no parade route in the planning this year, as the Pats were defeated Saturday night in Denver by the Broncos 27-13 (As you surely know by now). While the defending champs did have their chances, no team that turns the ball over five times deserves to (or should, really) win a playoff game in the National Football League.

The just keep on truckin’, don’t they. The defending World Champs, the New England Patriots, masterfully disassembled the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday at Gillette stadium in Bostonist's satellite office in Foxboro, 28-3. The Pats advanced through the Wild Card round of the National Football League’s playoffs, and are awaiting the results of Sunday's games which will determine whether they will travel to Denver to face the Broncos, or Indianapolis for a rematch with good old Peyton Manning.
