In the midst of our fleeting lives, one sometimes feels called to take a stand. A meaningless but symbolic stand.

Former Massachusetts governor and presidential aspirant Mitt Romney delivered a thoughtful, moving speech today at the George Bush Sr. Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. Romney delivered points that no one could argue with--namely, that religious liberty is "fundamental to America's greatness." No kidding. Isn't that why the pilgrims came here in the first place? Aside from a few "duh" moments, Romney delivered a solid speech with some quotable lines, particularly: "Americans do...

Former Massachusetts governor and presidential aspirant Mitt Romney has decided to reassure voters about his Mormon faith in a speech. He typically diverted questions away from his faith in interviews--but former Arkansas governor, the folksy Weight Watchers posterboy Mike Huckabee, is posing a surprise challenge. Politico is already calling the speech a "huge gamble," but it might help. Romney's faith is the one thing he hasn't flip-flopped on. It's sad that some people can't leave...

The cold weather - and holiday festivities - descended upon Gothamist. The Rockefeller Christmas tree was lit, Broadway stagehand finally ended their strike, and NASCAR decided to run their victory lap through Times Square. There were disturbing photographs revealing the working conditions in which many city manholes are produced and ninjas were also a hot topic, either robbing homes or entering into alibis. But the city was really rocked by how Rudy Giuliani's visits...

Jimmy Tingle called Bostonist yesterday to console us about the closing of Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway in Davis Square. Tingle admitted in the conversation that the sheer work involved with running the theater was taking its toll, and he needed a break. He said, "I've done this, and I basically need to do something else." He stressed that his decision to close the Theater had nothing to do with the fact that the lease was...

Any day now, the U.S. EPA will designate Boston Harbor a "No Discharge Area."

With L'Affaire Sharpton, L'Affaire Duck Hunt, and L'Affaire Hair, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is building quite a national reputation. It may not be the reputation he wants, but we think it might be time to start a weekly roundup of Mitt's exploits as he runs for president. --Romney claims that he's found religion – of sorts – when it comes to abortion. Even though he was pro-choice, and everyone knows he's pro-choice, and his...

that we want to kill anyone and everyone that makes a "something on a something" joke. But then we realized that there was no way we could ever win this fight, and, hell, if you can't beat them, we might as well join them. And with that, you have the theme of this weeks' Gothamist network post.

Update: Life is unfair. Bostonist wanted a regional or local story that would give us an excuse to gripe about the President, and we thought we'd found it (see below). Turns out, it was a hoax. So everything reported below about the U. Mass. student is not true. But President Bush is definitely still a disaster. Bostonist, like the Governor, has lately been checking out of local affairs and focusing on the presidency. But in...

Bostonist is (in our own estimation) the sensitive type. We like flowers, looking heavenward to appreciate celestial spectacles, and the quiet appreciation of our everyday surroundings. We like nature generally, and we think there is no shame in singing the praises of a sunrise. But damn it, the Globe has gone too far. Tuesday's editorial page featured an emotional, poetic ode to the rising sun, culminating in a gentle reminder that, notwithstanding the ravages of nature's wrath, life will go on. A lovely sentiment, to be sure, but worthy of an editorial? When Bostonist turns to the editorial column of the reliably slightly-left-of-center Globe, we expect moderate but sensible policy and the occasional, searing indictment that falls just short of saying "George Bush is an asshole." But a reflection on sunrises, no matter how lyrical, just doesn't pack enough editorial bang for the buck. There was a time when endorsing heliocentrism would have been controversial, but that time has passed. What's next? A pro-puppies editorial? A scathing attack on the lack of hugs in public discourse? Come on, Globe!

The New England Patriots are kicking off their regular season tonight against the Oakland Raiders at Gillette Stadium; with a somewhat mediocre pre-season, Coach Belichick and his boys will be taking the field at 9 p.m. to see if they can ultimately bring home a fourth Super Bowl title come this January. The Patriots will not be the only focus at the Razor tonight; New England is playing host to the NFL’s opening game, with...
