A wall at affluent Newton South High School has become an exhibit of college denial letters, a catharsis for one of the most anxious populations around. more ›

--John Edwards, the Harvard sophomore whose body was found yesterday at Harvard Medical School, committed suicide. People who knew him, such as a professor and his roommate are mystified. Eva Wolchover lists Edwards' many accomplishments. He was a top science student (and that's saying something around here), a stem cell researcher, and a guitar player. A Facebook group named "In Memory of John Edwards" has already been established. --Michele McPhee reports that a State Trooper... more ›
-- Two people were arrested early this morning after they reportedly stole a dog from in front of a Walgreen's in East Boston. Stole a dog. Police responded to a call from a "hysterical victim" who explained that she had secured Bella, a brown and black boxer, to a pole in front of the store and came back out to find Bella gone. Police found the pup after witnesses pointed them in the direction of... more ›
Weren't we told that losing the Lottery wasn't a big deal? Since this was the most loaded draft in years, the story went, the Celtics would happily grab a good player with the #5 pick that would complement Paul Pierce and the burgeoning youth movement, and join in on the team that would compete soon and for years to come. Yeah; not so much. Like a rube on a carnival midway, Danny Ainge fell for... more ›
The nailbiting, the pacing, the swearing, the chainsmoking - they all end tonight. Except maybe at Tommy Heinsohn's house. Tonight, we find out the next step in the Celtics' drive back to relevance. Will Danny Ainge swing one of the deals we've heard about? Will we be welcoming Kevin Garnett (no way), Shawn Marion (probably not), Dikembe Mutombo (possible) or Bill Telfair? Or will Danny stand pat and actually use his #5 pick to draft... more ›
There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist's London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with... more ›
The season has begun! Well, it really starts for the Red Sox tomorrow when they play against the Kansas City Royals, but we have a raging case of spring fever. The Red Sox held their last spring training game against the Phillies. With Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching, the team won 7 to 5. However, on Fox 25, we caught a glimpse of the Phillies' Pat Burrell giving Terry Francona the one-fingered salute. When people are flipping... more ›
The NCAA final four is tonight, with Georgetown playing Ohio State at 6 pm and UCLA playing Florida at 8:47 pm. To which we say, go anyone but Georgetown! Apologies to Doc Rivers' son, Jeremiah Rivers, who plays on the team as a guard with burly center Roy Hibbert, but we can't root for the team that thumped Boston College. And the start of baseball season is tomorrow. Since the first game of baseball season... more ›
Normally, we avoid Saturday Night Live like the plague because it just isn't funny. And we avoid Peyton Manning like the plague like any good Patriots fan. However, we saw clips of Peyton Manning on Saturday Night Live, and we were floored. We were laughing, and there's good reason why this athlete-service spoof is getting aired all over the place: more ›
--Eric Gillin, writing for Deadspin, posted one of the best summaries of the upcoming Red Sox season. Why was it so good? The author found a way to parallel each Red Sox player to a character in Major League II. Here's a taste of the article that compares Pedro Cerrano (a bulked-up Dennis Haysbert) to Willy Mo Pena and Manny Ramirez: "After not winning the ALCS, Cerrano returns to the team as a completely different... more ›
Georgetown took Boston College out of the NCAA tournament, 62 to 55. All in all, it wasn't a bad showing, especially since one of BC's big guns, Sean Williams, got suspended earlier in the season. We could wonder what might have been with Williams around, but it probably wouldn't have made a difference. Roy Hibbert, of the Hoyas, was just too much to deal with. The dude is 7-foot-2! But all was not lost in... more ›
According to the Globe, our own Holy Cross was "prepared to get physical" against Southern Illinois in the first round of the NCAA tournament, but that's not quite how things turned out. According to other coaches, the Southern Illinois Salukis are absolutely terrifying. One guy said a team could imitate their defense if "We run down to the police station and we get all the German shepherd attack dogs and we just bring them onto... more ›
Day One is in the books, and sixteen teams have been given their handshakes and Certificates of Participation. Among them is Duke, who failed the reach the second round for the first time since '96. Since Duke-hate is second to only Yankee-hate in the land, that's going to make a lot of people happy. B.C. represented well in Round One, sending Texas Tech and mercurial coach Bobby Knight back to Lubbock with an 84-75 win.... more ›
After a weekend of green, beer, and basketball, Bostonist is drained. It all started for us 10 years ago when our Western Mass. roots were honored as UMass Amherst team went to the Final Four with Coach Cal. and Marcus Camby (who later cost the Final Four standing for “improper gifts” – jewelry and prostitutes). Since then we’ve faithfully filed out our brackets each season. Sometimes we pick the underdogs for an upset and sometimes we glean knowledge from those who have followed entire season. We usually only catch a dozen or so games before the Madness begins. This year seems to be a particularly bad year for our bracket. It’s not any consolation that Dick Vitale is sitting in our boat for the Final Four selections. more ›
