Animals continue to make news.

  • A 6' tall giraffe calf weighing 125 pounds was born at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence on Friday. The birth was described as "smooth." Since 1997, Roger Williams was been home to eight giraffe births.
  • Sadly a cow was killed in a Saturday-morning accident on Route 495 North in Boxborough. The trailer carrying 10 cows overturned when the truck dragging it struck a construction arrow board. The driver was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. A passenger was not injured. Oh, the cows were headed to a slaughterhouse in Pennsylvania from Kimball Farm in Haverhill. Pictures.

    The Globe's Metro Desk reports Mass. lawmakers are about to create a spending plan torestore funding to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in Stoneham that was cut earlier this year. A vote on the bill, which also restores $40 million to cover health care costs for legal immigrants, may happen Wednesday. ZooNE should get $2.5 million of the $4 million that was cut back, which may or may not be enough to keep both zoos open. Regardless of the funding, there will be no animals killed. more ›
