Leaving aside the question of whether the event is newsworthy, Bostonist will be live-blogging the world's latest entertainment incarnation: an awarference (awards + press conference?). We're not sure the word will catch on, but we are interested in seeing how interesting (or soul-crushingly boring) the event will be. And we'd also like to discover if NBC will succeed in putting on a successful prom despite the lack of enthusiasm on the part of those nerdy, dateless writers (who are just like us!). The 2008 Golden Globe nominees were announced yesterday, and to nobody's surprise, they skewed heavily toward the period drama Atonement. Charlie Wilson's War, No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, and Sweeney Todd all emerged with at least 4 noms each.

Just last week at the Golden Globes Martin Scorsese took home the award for Best Director. Hollywood buffs tell us that the Golden Globes don't match up with what can be expected when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives out their 79th annual statues on February 25 this year, but the nominations released yesterday show that some of the boys from the film at least get to put Oscar Nominated next to their names for the next film. Local boy, Dorchester native, Mark (y Mark) Wahlberg grabbed a spot among the contenders.

Last night the Golden Globes were awarded in California. We would have watched but 24 was on with hours 3 and 4 of season 6. If Scarlett was going to get groped again surely it'd be up on the internets in a matter of minutes (she didn't and it isn't). Sure, it doesn't have the glitz or glamour of the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, or any of the countless other Hollywood award ceremonies. After all, people who spend their days pecking away at a keyboard may not all be ready for a shindig with tuxedos, red carpets, and Joan Rivers (well, is anyone ready for Rivers? - times two).
