As Bostonist did with books, we've tackled best of/worst of lists for movies. Not only are we including the latest best of/worst of lists, but we dug through each list to find which movies impressed every single critic and which ones were absolutely appalling. Here are links for recent "Best Of" lists: American Film Institute Top 10 National Board of Review The Onion AV Club Golden Globe Nominees Metacritic (FYI: The amazing Killer of Sheep......

The 2008 Golden Globe nominees were announced yesterday, and to nobody's surprise, they skewed heavily toward the period drama Atonement. Charlie Wilson's War, No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, and Sweeney Todd all emerged with at least 4 noms each. Local fave Casey Affleck was nominated for his (non-Jesse James) title role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and though Gone Baby Gone didn't get a nod in the......

The Thomas Crown Affair and The Friends of Eddie Coyle Brattle Theatre, Harvard Square, Cambridge Wednesday-Thursday Showtimes and tickets Millionaire Beacon Hill residents have a lot of time on their hands. Who can blame them if they use it plotting bank heists? Norman Jewison's The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), which screens tonight and tomorrow at the Brattle, doesn't point any fingers. It's a schizophrenic movie with a paper thin plot and a clumsy script. Thomas......

Ben Affleck is by no means the savior of the city for making a movie all about Boston. It's just a movie, after all. But some recent harsh criticism from Slate surprised us. Dorchester native Patrick Radden Keefe notes the abundance of aesthetically challenged individuals in the movie and declares, "The result is not so much what [Scorcese's] Mean Streets did for New York as what Deliverance did for Appalachia." Cue the umbrage. Did he......

All the local news outlets went nutty over Ben Affleck at the Boston premiere of Gone Baby Gone. They were especially tickled that Matt Damon showed up, too. Of course they both said they would sneak out so they wouldn't miss the Red Sox game. Affleck is on a real hearts-and-minds mission. On Tuesday, he went to City Hall and joined Mayor Menino to help the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) unionize hospital employees.......

Not that we're Affleck stalkers or anything. Far from it. But the Gone Baby Gone premiere is tonight in Boston. WBZ will be covering the red-carpet affair during the 6:00 pm news. Red-carpet-type activities will start at 6:00 pm, and the private screening will be at 7:00 pm. It could be interesting now that more movies are being made around here, and rumor is that Affleck's directorial debut might help redeem him after the nightmare......

--Julie Balise of the Northeastern News spotted Alec Baldwin, shooting for Bachelor No. 2 (who isn’t?), saying nice things about toddlers and performing eternal damage control after he left a nastygram on his daughter's voicemail. Yes, Bostonist subscribes to the NU News feed for items other than its crime log, but we do love its crime log so. --Ben Affleck was in town to preview the movie he directed, Gone Baby Gone, which has been......
