- Cardinal Sean O'Malley returned from Haiti Wednesday after assessing the country's needs in light of January's devastating earthquake. O'Malley said the needs are "overwhelming," but people are willing to help Haiti recover. The Boston Archdiocese raised over $2 million for Haiti.
- On April 14, Buddhist monks and nuns will walk from Norton to Attleboro as part of the ninth annual Walk for a New Spring, which serves as a rally supporting the abolition of nuclear weapons. The Walk lasts from March 20 (Burlington, VT) to May 1 (New York City) and is sponsored by the New England Peace Pagoda and the American Friends Service Committee. Participating Buddhist monks and nuns will walk throughout the day with banners and prayer drums, and will chant Buddhist prayers.
You've heard of fundraisers for Haiti; now, try a FUNraiser. Donations will go to help Haiti, but the event itself will be nothing but fun. And musical. The show is full of local favorites including Drug Rug, whose jammy indie tunes are warmer than a poncho and will help you buck up in this winter weather... while also helping Haiti recover. So by attending, you're creating a metaphorical poncho for Haiti! How kind of you.
- Five-year old Jonathan Escobar was found about one hour after he was declared missng from the Prospect Hill Academy Charter School in Somerville. [WCVB]
- Representative Patrick Kennedy isn't running for re-election. Basically, Kennedy said his father's death changed his priorities. Bostonist wishes Kennedy well. [Boston Globe]
- As Governor, Tim Cahill says he will propose significant layoffs and across-the-board tax cuts. [Boston Herald]
- Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis fired Justin Barrett, the Boston police officer who referred to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a "banana-eating jungle monkey." [Boston Globe]
- The White House says President Obama plans to meet with the Dalai Lama later this month. No date was announced, however the Dalai Lama is expected to be in Washington, D.C. on February 17-18. China is displeased. [CBS News]

- WCVB-TV Channel 5 is holding a day-long fundraiser to help Haitian earthquake victims. [WCVB]

1369 Coffeehouse, with locations in Inman and Central, has decided to offer free drinks from 8 am until 1 pm this Saturday, January 16. The free-for-all is designed to encourage donations to Partners in Health's Earthquake Relief in Haiti. If you're not the coffee type, you can also donate online.
