About 200 people gathered in Harvard Square and marched to Boston to offer support to the scores of Egyptian people protesting against their government. Local marchers carried signs calling for President Hosni Mubarak to go and an end to U.S. military aid. One sign read "Yes We Can," while one sign used a song title, "Walk Like An Egyptian" to show support.

There is no NBA center who wants to be compared to a statue. Except Shaquille O'Neal on a day off. Shaq made good on a promise to be a statue for almost an hour in Harvard Square on Thursday.
Shaquille O'Neal moves his 7'1'', 325-pound frame pretty good for a such a big guy. He acquitted himself well on the court through three preseason games for the Boston Celtics. He also took some cuts at Fenway Park in a Green-only softball field trip.
People need their coffee. Even at 3:15 a.m.? Apparently. Starbucks wants to open up a coffee shop at 1380 Mass. Ave. in Harvard Square in a location formerly occupied by Alpha Omega Jewelers. Cambridge has scheduled Board of Zoning Appeals hearing on Thursday, September 30 to consider the application.
For weddings! At least one of us on the Bostonist staff attended a wedding this weekend, so we're going to roll with it as a theme. This picture [brace yourself for the pun] jumped out at us for a few reasons: Unlike so many bouncy wedding pics, the couple in this one look genuinely gleeful--you can't fake those expressions. The composition is beautiful and the contrast between the white dress and black tux stands out. Sometimes people look really awkward in mid-air (see plethora of trampoline shots), but these guys look great. She looks like she's floating, and he looks like he's exploding. All around great shot.
Thanks to everyone who came out for yesterday's highly successful June photo walk. We had a nice time wandering through Harvard Square, and it was great hanging around Central afterwards. Props to the talented Mike Cialowicz who snapped this photo of the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library shortly after our walk. We're digging the monumental quality of the building, which is enhanced by the bold columns and Cialowicz's low perspective relative to the higher, cascading steps. (Also, it's worth noting that Cialowicz does a fine job of recording pertinent details, like the library's name. Excellent shooting *and* reporting.)
Andy Woodruff of Cartogrammar, who previously mapped the skies for us, has noted the sentiment many Boston newcomers express upon visiting Harvard Square, or Davis Square, or Kenmore Square, or any other local "square": but it's not square! To confirm this brilliant observation, Woodruff has mapped area squares, demonstrating that a "square" can take more shapes than we'd ever thought possible. Which square's shape is most appealing to you?
We're shaking things up a bit and doing our June photo walk on a Wednesday evening, just for a change of pace. The venue will be Harvard Square in Cambridge. Let's meet in the pit, which is right in front of the T stop (see image above).
Nice capture by photographynatalia of a street performer in Cambridge. The composition is a bit tight, but the expression on the performer's face makes up for it. Lovely lighting, and nice framing of the face with the lacy umbrella.
EandJsFilmCrew was in Harvard Square before the new year and took a perfectly exposed shot of the Out of Town News stand. Taken with a DSLR and processed as a B&W, this shot shows a lot of dynamic range and good detail.
-- A 26-year old female Harvard employee was attacked yesterday night in Harvard Square by a man who tried to strangle her with a rope. The quick-thinking victim was able to crouch, push her male assailant away, and escape with little harm having come to her. No arrests have been made. [Herald]
-- A Somerville man was stabbed repeatedly outside of the CVS on JFK Street in Harvard Square early Saturday morning before taking a cab to the emergency room. The man described three suspects to police, who have released little information about the incident. [Cambridge Chronicle]
Bostonist caught up with the Boston Tweed Ride as it paused at the Weeks Foot Bridge on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.
The vestiges of old Harvard Square keep disappearing, victims of whatever kind of virus leaves Bo Concepts and the Tannery in its horrific wake. According to the Crimson, it's time to add Herrell's Ice Cream Store to the list. The details are complicated—Allston's Herrell's went rogue in June—but it sounds like the Herrell's mothership is in disarray, and the Harvard Square location might become a new restaurant. In any event, don't expect scoops of Herrell's in the Square after November 1.
- After a near collision yesterday and another mishap involving trains in Massachusetts today, does Jeffrey Mullan really want to run the new MassDOT when it opens up for business on November 1? Really? [Boston Globe]
- The Massachusetts House of Representatives may vote as early as Thursday on a bill that would allow Gov. Deval Patrick to pick a temporary replacement for Sen. Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate. Channel 5 reports the bill would pass the House but not necessarily the state Senate. [WCVB]

We've gotten some email tips and seen some tweets about a big fire on Mass Ave this morning. Universal Hub reports details on street closures and traffic. Anyone have additional info? Update: The fire occurred in a hair salon in Porter. La Capelli Salon at 1776 Mass. Ave burned and Susanna, a store above, experienced smoke and water damage. No one was injured, though many drivers in stopped traffic threatened injury to others.
Frances Cardullo of Cardullo's in Harvard Square passed away yesterday. Cardullo's was known as much for its Red Sox window broadcasts as for its gourmet foods—and Frances' personality. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Catherine of Genoa (79 Summer Street in Somerville). Cardullo will be missed.
Out of Town News, the landmark Harvard Square newsstand that was scheduled to be shuttered by its owners, has received a reprieve in the form of a new operator. Muckey's Corp., a convenience store company, has reportedly offered to continue operating a newsstand in the city-owned building, apparently oblivious to current trends in news media sales. Bostonist has finally thawed out from a chilly Saturday night in Harvard Square, site of the Le:60 Film Fest. Like Marco Polo returning from China, we come laden with tales of the wonders we witnessed. (Unlike the Italian, we also bring back some photos.)
We love YouTube here at Bostonist. But let’s be honest: serious short-film artists looking to get exposure typically get buried in a sea of RickRolls. All hope is not lost, however; tomorrow night in Harvard Square from 5:30-10, the first annual Le:60 Film Fest will showcase nearly 100 artists who compressed their best ideas into films just one minute long.
So, it’s finally October and the big fest in Munich is already winding down. If you’re one of the many of us who can’t just pick up and fly to Germany for the last four days of the official Oktoberfest, don’t fret. Many Americans think the beer party is actually in October, understandably, so there are still several fests to attend!
Crazy Dough's also has some great specials that help you keep the costs down. A personal-sized (9-inch) pizza, paired with a soda, goes for as little as $4, and it's definitely big enough for a meal. For a few dollars more, you can have the gourmet toppings on your personal pizza. The crust (white or wheat) is super thin and gets a nice crunch to it in the oven. Two slices and a soda are a comparable price. And if you're still thirsty, you can get $1 drafts or $4 pitchers of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
If you're wandering Harvard Square tonight or this weekend, look for a pink truck doling out free ice cream. Ciao Bella, a new gelato brand that Oprah has dubbed as one of her "favorite things," is taking a get-to-know-you tour across the country, giving out 100,000 free scoops along the way. They'll be stopping in Boston this weekend, where the "Ciao Bella Swirl", their signature neon-colored vehicle, will be serving flavors like blood orange sorbet, coconut sorbet, blackberry cabernet sorbet, pistachio gelato, maple ginger snap gelato and vanilla gelato.
Well, now you know how to get around and where to drink. How about where to get some cheap grub? There's lots of great food in this city, it just takes some exploring to find it.
-- Bostonist would like the words "Roxbury" and "Dorchester" to go on hiatus from the Blotter headlines for a few weeks. A quadruple shooting in Roxbury left four teenagers, two boys and two girls, hospitalized last night with non-life-threatening injuries. The children, aged 15 and 16, were shot by a fleet footed gunman while they sat on a stoop on Wardman Road, blocks from the Jamaica Plain border, and within a short walk of the National Night Out celebration at the Franklin Park Zoo.
