Boston Blotter: Woman Attacked with Rope in Havard Square, Human-on-Human Biting in Alewife

-- A 26-year old female Harvard employee was attacked yesterday night in Harvard Square by a man who tried to strangle her with a rope. The quick-thinking victim was able to crouch, push her male assailant away, and escape with little harm having come to her. No arrests have been made. [Herald]

-- A Somerville man was stabbed repeatedly outside of the CVS on JFK Street in Harvard Square early Saturday morning before taking a cab to the emergency room. The man described three suspects to police, who have released little information about the incident. [Cambridge Chronicle]

Bostonist caught up with the Boston Tweed Ride as it paused at the Weeks Foot Bridge on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

The vestiges of old Harvard Square keep disappearing, victims of whatever kind of virus leaves Bo Concepts and the Tannery in its horrific wake. According to the Crimson, it's time to add Herrell's Ice Cream Store to the list. The details are complicated—Allston's Herrell's went rogue in June—but it sounds like the Herrell's mothership is in disarray, and the Harvard Square location might become a new restaurant. In any event, don't expect scoops of Herrell's in the Square after November 1.

    • The Massachusetts House of Representatives may vote as early as Thursday on a bill that would allow Gov. Deval Patrick to pick a temporary replacement for Sen. Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate. Channel 5 reports the bill would pass the House but not necessarily the state Senate. [WCVB]

We've gotten some email tips and seen some tweets about a big fire on Mass Ave this morning. Universal Hub reports details on street closures and traffic. Anyone have additional info? Update: The fire occurred in a hair salon in Porter. La Capelli Salon at 1776 Mass. Ave burned and Susanna, a store above, experienced smoke and water damage. No one was injured, though many drivers in stopped traffic threatened injury to others.

  • Frances Cardullo of Cardullo's in Harvard Square passed away yesterday. Cardullo's was known as much for its Red Sox window broadcasts as for its gourmet foods—and Frances' personality. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Catherine of Genoa (79 Summer Street in Somerville). Cardullo will be missed.

Out of Town News, the landmark Harvard Square newsstand that was scheduled to be shuttered by its owners, has received a reprieve in the form of a new operator. Muckey's Corp., a convenience store company, has reportedly offered to continue operating a newsstand in the city-owned building, apparently oblivious to current trends in news media sales. Everyone knows that Finale, with four locations in the metro Boston area, is a great place for fancy desserts (albeit slightly pricy). But did you know they also serve up tasty lunches at a reasonable price?

Bostonist has finally thawed out from a chilly Saturday night in Harvard Square, site of the Le:60 Film Fest. Like Marco Polo returning from China, we come laden with tales of the wonders we witnessed. (Unlike the Italian, we also bring back some photos.)

We love YouTube here at Bostonist. But let’s be honest: serious short-film artists looking to get exposure typically get buried in a sea of RickRolls. All hope is not lost, however; tomorrow night in Harvard Square from 5:30-10, the first annual Le:60 Film Fest will showcase nearly 100 artists who compressed their best ideas into films just one minute long.

So, it’s finally October and the big fest in Munich is already winding down. If you’re one of the many of us who can’t just pick up and fly to Germany for the last four days of the official Oktoberfest, don’t fret. Many Americans think the beer party is actually in October, understandably, so there are still several fests to attend!

Crazy Dough's also has some great specials that help you keep the costs down. A personal-sized (9-inch) pizza, paired with a soda, goes for as little as $4, and it's definitely big enough for a meal. For a few dollars more, you can have the gourmet toppings on your personal pizza. The crust (white or wheat) is super thin and gets a nice crunch to it in the oven. Two slices and a soda are a comparable price. And if you're still thirsty, you can get $1 drafts or $4 pitchers of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

If you're wandering Harvard Square tonight or this weekend, look for a pink truck doling out free ice cream. Ciao Bella, a new gelato brand that Oprah has dubbed as one of her "favorite things," is taking a get-to-know-you tour across the country, giving out 100,000 free scoops along the way. They'll be stopping in Boston this weekend, where the "Ciao Bella Swirl", their signature neon-colored vehicle, will be serving flavors like blood orange sorbet, coconut sorbet, blackberry cabernet sorbet, pistachio gelato, maple ginger snap gelato and vanilla gelato.

Well, now you know how to get around and where to drink. How about where to get some cheap grub? There's lots of great food in this city, it just takes some exploring to find it.

-- Bostonist would like the words "Roxbury" and "Dorchester" to go on hiatus from the Blotter headlines for a few weeks. A quadruple shooting in Roxbury left four teenagers, two boys and two girls, hospitalized last night with non-life-threatening injuries. The children, aged 15 and 16, were shot by a fleet footed gunman while they sat on a stoop on Wardman Road, blocks from the Jamaica Plain border, and within a short walk of the National Night Out celebration at the Franklin Park Zoo. Are pies the new cupcakes? This Bostonist hopes so. From cup-pies at the Piehole on ABC's Pushing Daisies to the opening of Pie Bakery in Newton a few months ago, it seems like we're on the verge of a new flood of sweet treats. But Petsi Pies, in Somerville and Cambridge, has been around since 2003, proving it's not a fad.

At a restaurant named Flat Patties, the obvious choice is a burger. And sure, the burgers are cheap and tasty, but there are other winners on the menu that are just as good (if not better) and don't require much cash in your pocket.

Pizza is the quintessential cheap eats. A slice typically only costs a couple of bucks, and it's fast and portable. One slice, however, is often not enough, and you're left wanting more.

When most people think of crepes, they think of the on-the-go snack from France, spread with sugar or Nutella, or the fancier flambéed Crepe Suzette, served for dessert in fine restaurants. But crepes can make an excellent meal, especially when they are stuffed with lots of fresh ingredients, like those at Arrow Street Crepes in Harvard Square.

--According to the Herald, the Commonwealth's Supreme Judicial Court ruled that, "Dancing nude in Harvard Square to protest the commercialization of Christmas is not a constitutionally protected act of self-expression," overturning a decision by a lower court to throw out a case against a local woman. The Herald doesn't have much background information about the defendant, except what they could obtain from a vague MySpace profile. [Boston Herald]

-- If you saw a red-handed man downtown today, he was probably a bank robber. Police are searching for a man in his 50s in connection with the afternoon hold-up of the First Federal Savings Bank. The man fled the scene in a cab until a red dye pack in his loot bag exploded. He then fled on foot. Confidential to cabbies: people running from a bank with a bag of money are likely to ruin your upholstery. [Globe]

    Noon

Harvard Square is celebrating the Year of the Rat with a Lion Dance Parade. Perhaps even more meaningful for some Cambridge residents, the Hong Kong (yay scorpion bowl!) is holding an open house in honor of its 54th anniversary. But be aware that they are having a craft party, not a scorpion bowl party. 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, free.

The cold weather is no excuse for you not to get out!
