Boston Blotter: Sex offender, homicide, robberies

-- A Level Three sex offender allegedly assaulted a woman in a Massachusetts General Hospital bathroom on Thursday. David C. Flavell was charged with assault with intent to rape and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and held without bail until a psychiatric evaluation next Tuesday. Flavell's court-appointed attorney Neil Madden said Flavell takes Prozac and was drinking Captain Morgan rum Thursday. Madden said his client "doesn't remember entering Massachusetts General Hospital. He remembers being with a friend and he remembers ending up in jail.’’ The victim is a Mass. General employee. Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Deakin said Flavell has prior sex crimes convictions. [Globe, Herald]

--Surprise snow! --A local kid figured out something to do with bubble wrap other than pop it. [WCVB] --Did you get stuck on the Red Line for a while today? A "very small trash fire" at Andrew Station shut down the Red Line this afternoon for 15 minutes. [Joe Pesaturo at the MBTA] --Doctors believe they have successfully reattached the lip of the child whose father bit it off over the weekend. [WBZ] --Cambridge can't...

--Needham went into lockdown yesterday when 78-year-old Robert J. Moore was murdered in his home, prompting a manhunt and a standoff with a suspicious man at Stone Hearth Pizza. However, the guy at the pizza shop wasn't the killer. He was just acting nervous. During the standoff, a State Police K-9 unit was busy arresting William Dunn, 41, of Norwood, who had fled to a marsh. The Globe writes that Norwood Dunn was at the...

--What at least one tv station thought was a gasoline heist (hey, it's expensive) turned out to be the result of a mistaken delivery. WHDH reported that employees saw someone in a Lukoil truck and uniform delivering gas last night to the Lukoil on Bennington Street. Upon further inspection, they found that the individual had allegedly absconded with $19,000 worth of gas. Police started making calls and found that "Further investigation revealed that the gas...

--At Fairview and Robert, a 15-year-old masked teenager from Roslindale tried to steal a woman's bag last night. The woman started yelling, and two people at a gas station ran after him and caught him. The perp tried to say he was only 15. Nice try, bub. He was still arrested. Elsewhere on the Blotter, police arrested a whole bunch of alleged hookers as part of "Operation Squeeze." One of them was 56 years old....

--In a shooting last night on Talbot Street, one woman died and a man is in serious condition at Brigham and Women's. According to reports, three people, including one woman, approached the victims before the shooting started. The woman, who has not yet been identified, is Boston's 56th homicide this year. --The family of the late Liquarry Jefferson, the 8-year-old shot by his own 7-year-old cousin earlier this year, is back in the spotlight. His...

--ShotSpotter, the BPD's new gunshot-detection system rounded up a gun-toting suspect Sunday night. Congratulations (we guess) to Justin Searcy, 17, of Mattapan, for being one of the first to be arrested thanks to ShotSpotter. --The driver of the car that crashed into a tree on Blue Hill Avenue was arraigned today in his hospital bed. 21-year-old Rohan Blackwood, of Dorchester, was charged with two counts of motor vehicle homicide and DUI. --Revere police arrested a...

--More on the man who was shot to death early Sunday morning on New Whitney Street. The Globe reports that he was 22-year-old Shawndel Mitchell. Mitchell was a dancer and a Harry Potter fan. He attended the Boston Arts Academy and was taking courses to be an EMT. The Metro spoke with friends who called him a "superstar." He is Boston's 53rd homicide victim this year. --Early this morning, two people died and four people...

--Any reader of crime logs must admit that Northeastern University generates some of the most entertaining crime logs known to humanity. A crime log is not judged on the amount of mayhem listed (though it is good to know what is going on in one's neighborhood, don't walk along at night, etc.) but by the sheer stupidity of the crime involved. And Northeastern students know how to deliver. They've given us an incident worthy of...

--One man was shot to death and two were wounded in Dorchester last night. One resident told the Herald that the man was exactly who the shooters were looking for, and they shoved him into the hallway of an apartment building on Shandon Road and started firing. Two men were killed at that spot back in July. Last night's victim is the 49th homicide of the year. Later last night, two other people were shot...

--The Commish Ed Davis - DA Dan Conley back-and-forth continues. Davis put out a three-page letter explaining why the State Police shouldn't be working on MBTA or transit-related homicides. The State Police doesn't appear to give a crap whether they are working on those homicides or not. But the transit police chief has taken Conley's side and said they would like state police on those cases. Of course, the time it took Conley to develop...

The turf wars aren't limited to Boston. The Globe reported on an internal fight within the Gloucester PD that should make you feel a little better about the BPD's petty tiffs. A lieutenant for the GPD accused police chief John Beaudette of "running into him stomach-first during a recent confrontation over the deployment of officers." We looked at the Globe's picture of Lieutenant Jerris Cook, along with ones the Gloucester Times took of chief Beaudette....

What, the mayor leaves town and stuff goes nuts? Ever since Commish Ed Davis shook up his staff without Suffolk DA Dan Conley's consultation, the DA's office and the BPD haven't been the best of pals. Now, those relations are even frostier because Conley decided that the State Police - not the BPD - will be in charge of investigating any MBTA homicides. Conley says he's doing this to even everyone's workload. The BPD has...

--A man was set free after being held 44 days for a crime he didn't commit. After a 3-month-old girl was slashed at a party in July, police arrested Andrew Vaughn. Investigation revealed that a woman at the party, 19-year-old Mabel Rojas, committed the crime. What went wrong? Suspicions fell upon Vaughn, who was attending a party at the house with Rojas and the baby's mother. He saw the baby injured in the bedroom and...

--The BPD is on the defensive after Roxbury residents accused them of using unnecessary force to shut down a party on Saturday. The police says the party was so violent that 100 officers were needed to stop it. The partiers said that officers giving them black eyes, choking them, and spraying Mace all over the place was the real source of the violence. One interesting tidbit didn't appear until the third paragraph of the Herald's...

--Police have released a sketch of the man they believe to be responsible for the two attacks on women on the Esplanade and one attack in South Boston. Again, here is a description: "A black man, 28 to 32 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 220 pounds with a muscular build and a shaved head. The man was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and dark-colored jeans." We're also posting the police sketch. Police have...

--While this isn't crime, per se, the next story definitely has something to do with the law. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has more to worry about beyond his friend impersonating other people. A company is suing Ortiz for $1 million because he hasn't held up his end of a contract. WCVB says that Ortiz was supposed to autograph 13,000 items and make public appearances on behalf of Steiner Sports Marketing, Inc. But the company...

--So Commish Ed Davis reorganized the police department over the weekend, shuffling people around and, according to the Globe eliminating some of the tensions distracting the department from solving crimes. Davis said he wanted "people who would work together" in charge. But a new feud may have sprung up instead. Suffolk County DA Dan Conley said publicly that he isn't happy at all with the changes within the BPD. Conley isn't happy because Ed Davis...

--Well, if the homicide rate jumps to 36, and it's only July, maybe it's time to make some changes in management. Commish Ed "Pragmatist" Davis has removed homicide chief Daniel Coleman and superintendent for the Bureau of Investigative Services Paul Joyce Jr. from their posts. Replacing them will be Thomas Lee at homicide and Bruce Hollaway for Investigative Services. In another move, Davis moved his chief of staff, Daniel Linskey, to be the head of...

-- The Herald reports that a man was shot in Roxbury on Wednesday night to increase the city's homicide tally to 34. The slain man, described as "in his late teens or early 20s" was driven to Boston Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later. The Herald vividly tells us that his trip to the hospital took place in "a blood-splattered Chevrolet Blazer." Police are looking for information. -- The body of a...

-- Two people were arrested early this morning after they reportedly stole a dog from in front of a Walgreen's in East Boston. Stole a dog. Police responded to a call from a "hysterical victim" who explained that she had secured Bella, a brown and black boxer, to a pole in front of the store and came back out to find Bella gone. Police found the pup after witnesses pointed them in the direction of...

--As if carnies didn't have a shady enough reputation, a carnival in Hyannis hired a convicted sex offender. Good job with the background checks, folks. The guy is 24 years old and has 52 outstanding warrants. With all that, how did he have time for the carnival? --More on the teenager shot on the train – like the stabbings at Back Bay, we're wondering why police weren't able to catch the perps. Even if people...

--Three men started shooting into a home in Dorchester last night, hitting an 8-year-old boy in the abdomen. LaQuarrie Jefferson later died of his wound. The Globe said police don't have a motive. (The Globe also said it happened in Roxbury, but most other outlets are saying Dorchester - it was near Franklin Park.) The Herald said it was gang-related. Ed Davis said in a press conference that "There are people who are in the...

--The BPD blotter writer had reason to be confused yesterday afternoon because something happened, only the BPD isn't exactly sure what it was. Here's what they know: In Brighton, two witnesses claim they saw three people "wearing sweaters, camouflaged clothing, and ski masks drag a white male off the sidewalk and push him into a van." The witnesses got a description of the car and a license plate number, but the BPD blotter writer is...

--A restaurant owner was attacked in his own establishment yesterday afternoon in Jamaica Plain. Was it a holdup? A robbery? A grudge? No. He got in a fight with a customer over the remote control. The customer somehow got the remote control and began to "mess around" with the channels and wouldn't stop. Maybe he was looking for the spelling bee finals. Anyway, the owner told him to cut it out, and "the suspect...

Paul Farris, the innocent bystander who died in this weekend's police-chase crash in Somerville, wasn't just a graduate of Tufts and an aspiring law student. He was also frontman of theMark, a local rock band that is reeling from the death. theMark's MySpace page covers the death, and they will be announcing memorial services later on the site. The cab driver and Farris' girlfriend, Katelyn Hoyt, are recovering in the hospital. The post announcing the...

--The last thing we need, especially with a presidential election coming up, is for someone to add fuel to the flag-burning debate. On Thursday, someone in Natick destroyed a solar-powered trash container by stuffing it with American flags and setting them on fire. The person who did it must be trying to offend as many people as possible - the left by wrecking an environmental device, and the right by burning flags. We are all...

--The BPD released a statement about a series of eight armed robberies in the South End and Downtown that have a clear pattern. They've robbed a Lindt Chocolate Shop, Ben & Jerry's, Emack and Boulios, Bon Bon, the gift shop at New England Medical Center, Truly Jorg's Patisserie, Papyrus, and Vitamin Shoppe. Perhaps they hit up the Vitamin Shoppe because they realized their robbery diet was on the unhealthy side. Despite their fondness for candy...

--Machetes are definitely hot in East Boston. The BPD saw a guy just a-walking around at night with a two-foot-long machete "protruding from his waist area." Could he have been using it to accessorize his belt? Luckily, they arrested him before he got to use it on anyone. We imagine no one wanted to bother him except for a few brave police officers. --A cold case is warming up in New Bedford. Nine women were...

Thanks to Universal Hub (great detective work Adam) we're now a little more self-aware; a better scope of the breadth of what we do over here on this little corner of the internet has been uncovered. For a while we thought it was all typos and quickly written blurbs about news, sports, and current haps in and around Boston. Apparently Google is listing www.bostonist.com alongside the street address for Boston City of: Homicide Unit...
