We made it to Davis Square's third annual Honk Festival on a windy, sunny Saturday afternoon. Though many of the bands specialized in Dixieland marching standards, there were a few that changed the whole tenor of the gathering. Locals Bloco Afrobrasil were one of those bands. Another was Scene of the Crime Rovers, an experimental marching band from Durham, North Carolina, whose repertoire includes lengthy stretches of supervised improvisation based on John Zorn's Cobra game. More skronk than honk, the SoC Rovers also managed to be crowd-pleasers. more ›
