A group of neighbors started the Wake Up the Earth Festival in 1979 to protest the expansion of I-95 into Jamaica Plain and it's still going strong 32 years later. Each year, local vendors, artists, community groups, and schools come together to offer pupets, bands, food, and more. Police are searching for the driver of a "compact to mid-size black car" involved in an accident in Dorchester on Saturday that killed a 39-year old mother of three.
The northbound ramp between Route 128 and I-95 remains closed at this hour after a UPS tandem tractor-trailer carrying commercial ink cartridges to Portland, Maine turned over this morning and spilled several hundred gallons of non-hazardous ink. As the truck turned over, Channel 5 reported, a guard rail punctured the ink containers inside it. In order to fully clean the spill, 500 feet of the road has to be replaced. The ramp will be closed until the spill is fully cleaned, the State police said. The driver was not hurt in the one-vehicle crash. Part of I-95 were closed Sunday after a tanker truck crashed and spilled some 11,000 gallons of jet fuel in Foxboro. The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection is coordinating the cleanup of the affected area. Foxboro Fire said the spill was contained and their focus is on curbing soil contamination, and ensuring that water wells in Mansfield and Foxboro are safe. The trucking company is C. White & Son Inc., which has a record of three spills and four accidents that resulted in more than $500,000 in fines. Two major crashes near Newburyport have shut down I-95. Both were rollovers: one of a car, and one of a tanker truck that is leaking fuel. Five people were taken from the scene in ambulances, and traffic is backed up for miles in either direction. Be careful when headed that way—better yet, don't head that way if you can avoid it.
