Jose Gonzalez, 32, of Somerville is charged with mayhem after he allegedly cut off three of his girlfriend’s fingers after an a Saturday morning argument in the South End. Gonzalez was held without bail on Tuesday. Police recovered a severed pinky finger and a foldout knife, and have security camera footage of Gonzalez dropping her off at the Boston Medical Center. Over 30 Brazilian nationals, allegedly in the country illegally, have been arrested since July in connection with an investigation into the TJ Aviation Flight Academy at Stow's Minute Man Air Field. This case could expose flaws in the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) procedures designed to ensure only “properly checked, legal aliens" are permitted to take flight lessons. Scrutiny increased on flight schools after the government learned several 9/11 hijackers took flight training in the United States. One person arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)was the school’s owner, Thiago DeJesus, a 26-year-old Brazilian immigrant. He told the Boston Globe he's here legally but didn't show proof of residency. He's been giving flying lessons since his arrest this week. "You think if we did something wrong, we’d still be open as a flight school?," he asked. more ›

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral publicly contradicted herself this week as she demanded that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents remove all immigrant detainees from the Suffolk County jail, and then announced she would reconsider her own order. Now CNN reports ICE officials plan to respond to her concerns directly. more ›

This image by historygradguy first caught our attention because it reminded some of us of our morning commute, but then we looked closer and realized it's a pretty nice photo. We like the contrast of the shiny bike and black coat against the mottled gray ice. We like that it's well exposed, so we can see the gradations of white and gray. --For some reason, 32-year-old Keni Garcia of Haverhill allegedly wanted 85,000 bullets. The ATF, ICE and state and local authorities seem to think this was a bad idea. Who knew? Essex County prosecutors are charging Garcia, who was scheduled to become an American citizen today, with illegal possession of ammunition, three counts of possession of a high-capacity firearm, and illegal storage of a firearm. Investigators found 10,000 rounds in his car, 20,000 rounds at his house. He allegedly tried to buy 55,000 more rounds in New Hampshire.[Boston Globe, Boston Herald] more ›
