Senate President Therese Murray swore in Governor Deval Patrick to his second term as governor of Massachusetts on Thursday. Patrick urged lawmakers to work together for the good of the state. "To meet these responsibilities, I challenge us all to turn to each other, not on each other. Let us bring our passion not to scoring political points but to finding real solutions," Patrick said. Gov. Patrick outlined his second-term agenda in his address. His goals incude job growth, streamlining regulations, cut health care costs, and curb violence. Patrick's inauguration day began at the Old South Church at a service featuring Rev. Liz Walker of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Jamaica Plain, and Cardinal Sean O'Malley among others. Massachusetts cellist Yo-Yo Ma was not actually playing his cello during Barack Obama's televised inauguration. Complaining that it was "wicked cold," the musician and sex symbol opted instead to pretend to perform while piping in a prerecorded track. [NYTimes] more ›

Well, sorta. The Herald reports that Amtrak is increasing service from Boston (among other cities) to DC for Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20, and many airlines plan to offer additional flights to the capital for the festivities as well. So that makes it seem kind of like Obama has made us all reconsider our addiction to cars, but that isn't quite the case—plus the increased train and plane usage is probably not that great for the environment anyway. Regardless, increasing train service for the day is better than having thousands of folks drive their cars into DC, create massive traffic, and attempt to park in nonexistent spaces, so kudos to Amtrak for making at least one smart (and lucrative) decision in its history. more ›

The newly installed Governor has been taking a lot of flack for some spending during his first two months in office. It all started with the inauguration and its price tag. Then we heard about the $72,000 chief of staff he hired to assist his wife in the duties of a first lady. Then a couple of helicopter rides in State Police aircraft. Follow that with Caddy-gate, a $46,000 lease for a Cadillac DTS (his other option was the similarly equipped $31k Chrysler 300). But the cherry for the media blitz surrounding the spending was the $27,000 spent in upgrades his office at the State House, including $12,000 for new drapes. Amidst scrutiny of his spending, and little attention to his political initiatives Deval Patrick has come out and admitted it was a bit much. He's screwed up and will be repaying the Commonwealth's coffers for some of his extravagance. Repayment will include the full cost of the redecoration of his office, and a contribution to the monthly lease cost of the Cadillac to make it comparable to the cost of Romney's vehicle. It bears mention that Dukakis used to take the T to work as Governor (and still does when he's in town.) more ›

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into... more ›

Deval's hours old administration has stepped up and already thrown the switch quick putting the updated website live. It has only been a matter of hours since the Patrick administration has officially been the "Patrick administration" and the mass.gov website is dripping with the new governor and lieutenant governor's names. The top news story on mass.gov is an announcement of the inauguration providing a link to the new page devoted to Patrick/Murray, no longer Romney/Healey. Changing over the names emblazoned on fixtures is one of the things we're always curious about. If Menino is ever voted out of office how long will it take to remove his name from all of those signs and websites it adorns – he's even got a placard on the Zamboni that smoothes the ice on the Frog Pond. One thing that can be done quickly these days is changing the name on a website. Patrick's team has done just that. more ›

This has been a rough week for your -ist pals, though you wouldn't know it from the great posts all over the network. Plagued with server problems, our tech team (led by the great Neil Epstein) toiled around the clock to solve the glitches as they arose.
