Don't we all. But this is a uniquely romantic opportunity: spend a year in Parma, one of Italy's food hubs, studying sustainable agriculture at a university run by the Slow Food organization, with field trips to France, Greece and Spain, then produce a final project about it. This Bostonist smells a book deal.
Deval Patrick has been making news lately with the State of the Commonwealth and his public support of presidential candidate Barack Obama. But what of Massachusetts' other top dog, Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi? Bostonist read Paul McMorrow's lengthy Boston Magazine profile of the Speaker of the House and found the article too interesting not to sum up.
What does one get a missing mobster on the anniversary of his vanishing? A Hallmark card? One that says, "Thanks for leaving"?

Nostalghia 11.00am, Saturday, November 10 Brattle Theatre 40 Brattle Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge Free Sparsely attended and overlooked by the media, the Brattle Theatre's monthly "Elements of Cinema" series must be the most unsung ongoing act of cultural good will in Cambridge. Since June, the Brattle has offered a free crash course in the history of cinema -- one classic film shown every second Saturday morning. Past screenings have included Citizen Kane, The 400 Blows,...
BulgerMania seems to have broken out in Italy because police are seeing Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend everywhere. Even if you don't look like Whitey Bulger but happen to be an old white guy, do not go to Italy. The FBI posted an image and video of a distinguished-looking white couple strolling through Italy. And, what do you know, distinguished-looking white guys who don't even look like Bulger are getting hassled. Earlier this month, poor...
Someone thought they saw gangster-fugitive-ghost Whitey Bulger in Italy in May. Then a few months pass, people get bored, another old white guy shows up in Italy, and it's time for "Where's Whitey?" in which the media tries to spot its favorite shady criminal. This time around, the FBI thinks that it spotted Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Grieg. Unfortunately, the particular pair in the photo look like any other upper-class retired couple looking...
Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill thinks he got a raw deal from customs officials at Logan when his family returned to the country from a trip to Italy. Customs was not amused when they found Cahill's daughter with three peaches, and these three little peaches have grown into a large dispute. Cahill told the media, "If this is the way the federal government treats people when they come into this country, it’s distressing." Has this...
We're starting to think gangster-turned-fugitive Whitey Bulger is kind of like the Neti, or UFOs, or Bat Boy. He shows up when the moon aligns with Saturn or when movies about him hit the big screen. He's turned up again, this time in Italy. Someone photographed an old guy and his girlfriend, and computer software indicated that the girlfriend may have been Bulger's girlfriend. That was enough to get the Bulger Task Force to fly...
Bostonist has decried the tremendous ugliness and lack of utility of City Hall Plaza before, but for once, this Sunday, it served a worthwhile purpose: The World Cup's final match, between France and (hometown favorite) Italy was shown on a massive screen for thousands of people. We watched most of the game there, and can attest that the view of the screen was remarkably good from most everywhere (Toddler Bostonist, who accompanied us, insisted...
While the world readies for the final match of the FIFA World Cup, Boston gets ready to watch it. The French and Italians will match up on Sunday afternoon – and everyone has an opinion on where the best place to watch the game will be. Mayor Menino has sanctioned a World Cup Party of sorts on City Hall Plaza this Sunday. A big screen broadcast of the match will have capacity to hold up...
Nearly every digital camera on the market these days comes with a number of pre-programmed settings for aperture and shutter speed. Usually these include a macro setting for taking pictures up close, portrait setting for moderately close and still captures, a sports setting to capture the split-second action image, and fireworks. While most of the settings may find their way into daily photography, last night everyone was turning the dial or scrolling through menus to use the fireworks setting to capture some images of the explosive sky above the Charles River. Of course snapshots weren't the only captures taken. Lots of videos are showing up of the display. If your view was blocked by a tree as you sat on the Esplanade, or the Pru distorted the view from your South End roof deck perch, or Italy's world cup semi-final triumph had you celebrating a little too early in the day and you passed out during the 1812 Overture you can find a little solace in seeing the pyrotechnics in today's video. For full effect you'll need to have someone punch you in the chest every time one of those white "bang!" flashes goes off – or otherwise get some base that will rattle you momentarily.
Well, it's bringing (this) Bostonist to a standstill, anyway. If you're wondering why we managed only a paltry number of posts today, and you're not content with the real answer (laziness important, work-related business), consider this: The World Cup (or "FIFA World Cup," as they keep calling it on TV, in case you tuned in looking for that other world cup) is in full swing, and the U.S. had its first match today, against our...
Bostonist doesn’t need you to become as knowledgeable as the city’s finest sommelier, but getting a little more familiar with wine can make a world of a difference at your next dinner, your next party, or your next date.
Bostonist's going to see the movies about four-letter words and zombies, but we urge you to check out the rest of Boston International Film Festival, which offers samurai, crossword puzzles, giant Buddhas, and Pixies. Wednesday 4/19 Lost in Translation The Harvard Film Archive follows up Maggie Chung & Tony Leung's gorgeous, heartbreaking non-affair in Hong Kong with Scarlett Johansen & Bill Murray's equally beautiful, equally heartbreaking non-affair in Tokyo. But we might just stay home...
Bostonist had our eyes on the altar this morning as we awaited the late breaking news from Italy. It wasn’t Torino but that sovereignty tucked away in Rome we like to call the Vatican. While the paper reported today that there was an impending list, and our very own Archbishop might be in the top ten, we heard it on the radio and found the release online. The Vatican announced today that Archbishop Sean, as he asked to be called when he was appointed in 2003, will be elevated to the rank of Cardinal on March 24.
Iodice used Ancient Rome as his inspiration. More to the point, the ISGM explains,
With Labor Day on the horizon, Bostonist feels the initial heart pangs of summer's end. Fortunately, there's reason to celebrate in the North End this weekend: the St. Anthony's Feast. Get a taste of Old World Italy as St. Anthony's festivities fill Endicott, Thacher, and North Margin streets with music, dancing and a plethora of culinary delights. Festival activities begin Friday at 7:00 p.m. and culminate Sunday with the Grand Finale and the procession of the St. Anthony statue at 9:00 p.m.
The chances are high that Celtics fans will be surprised who the Men in Green choose in tomorrow night's draft. Last year's draft provided the C's with a trio of players that managed to contribute more than their fair share this past season, Al Jefferson being the most standout of the three. Many look at him as being a future NBA All-Star and the backbone of the Celtics future. Delonte West showed that in...
For the second time in a week Bostonist looks north for flight status. No, the flight monitors haven't been rearranged at logan, they've just diverted the flights. Today Alitalia Flight 618 from Milan, Italy which was supposed to land at Boston’s Logan Airport instead made way for Bangor Maine. Last Thursday an Air France flight headed to the hub was also diverted to Bangor. Here at Bostonist we would like to take a minute and...
