The Red Sox concluded an 8-1 road trip with a 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. Boston (41-27) has won 11 of 12 games to take a 1.5 games lead over the Yankees in the A.L. East. Terry Francona said the trip was a success and shows the team is bacck on track. "We feel like we are playing better baseball,” Francona said.

David Krejci, Nathan Horton, and Rich Peverley scored consecutive goals to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead they never relinquished as they won game three of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, 4-2. The Bruins trail Montreal 2-1 in the series with game four on Wednesday. At the moment the Red Sox needed a quality start, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched perhaps his best game in a Boston uniform as he blanked Toronto for seven innings in a 9-1 win Monday. The Sox are now 5-10 with three straight victories.
There are many questions about the 3-10 Red Sox of 2011. One of them isn't Josh Beckett, who earned his second win this season with a dominating performance in a 4-1 win over Toronto on Saturday. Beckett (2-1) struck out nine and allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings.
How do you know Jed Lowrie was the least likely member of the Boston Red Sox to hit a walk-off home run in last night's 5-4 11th inning victory over Toronto? He's not known as a power hitter, he's battled injuries, and had a shaky defensive play in the 10th. All are true, and also valid answers. Bostonist knows he's an unlikely hero because he kept his helmet on during the post-game interview. Take the lid off, kid. It could also be a Beltre issue, too, we guess.
The Celtics AND the Bruins? Both winning in solid fashion against inferior opponents on consecutive nights? Has the world turned upside-down?
As a wise man once said, "sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar, welll, he eats you." Yesterday, the bar ate the Red Sox, as they couldn't solve Jays starter Mark Rzepczynski and couldn't overcome an outing in which Brad Penny turned into Bad Penny. Throw in defensive miscues like the one pictured here, and it all added up to a frustrating 6-2 loss in Toronto.
They're telling us not to. But we can't help it. We hear the words "reigning MVP Dustin Pedroia" and "lower abdominal strain", we head for the bunkers. It's our nature. But whatever is keeping Dustin out for a couple of games, the Sox insist it's nothing to be alarmed about. And they warn us not to blame it Dustin going all-out for the World Baseball Classic. That's what they're saying, anyway. You have our blessing to get exactly as freaked out as you feel is necessary. And with Julio Lugo under the knife, the Globe has learned that Jed Lowrie is more than ready to keep the infield afloat.
We wanted the Red Sox to keep that door wedged shut against the Angels on Sunday night, but those pesky California types managed to crack the door open a smidge. While the team threatened again during Game 4 activity at Fenway Park on Monday night, the Red Sox, led by Heroes of the Night Jon Lester and Jed Lowrie, slammed the door shut with a 3-2 walkoff victory, putting a sudden end to a huge Angels season. Anaheim's sensational season is admirable, but it was Boston who got the three October victories that counted and earned the right to keep the postseason party raging on the Fenway grass.
"I don't really like hitting fourth," said Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, after being moved in the lineup to cover for the ailing Kevin Youkilis. Luckily, at this point, Dustin can hit when he's hitting fourth, or eighth, or underwater, or with one leg pinned up behind his back. Dustin, to put it another way, is on fire. He went 4-for-4, again, to help the Sox batter Chicago 8-2, and now leads the AL at .327.
Is this going to be the game that we look back on and say, yes, this was the day the 2008 Red Sox got it together? It's not out of the question. The Sox have been - let's go with scuffling - for a couple of weeks. They've watched Toronto blow them out of Fenway and blow Jon Lester out of SkyDome or whatever it's called now. And they stepped up, taking the Jays to extra innings and winning a wild game that's got the knot in every Sox stomach loosened up a little bit.
Well...that sucked.
Before Bostonist introduces you to Charlie Zink, we’d like to discuss Josh Beckett’s 5-1 win last night against the Chicago White Sox. Even without David Ortiz in the line up, the Red Sox were able to leave the Windy City splitting the series and the Beckett we were use to seeing last season made another appearance.
We at the Bostonist remember a time when many thought the Red Sox were babying Jon Lester. Before the cancer scare and before he had ever threw a ball at Fenway, we kept hearing how special this kid is and how they needed to make sure he was ready for Boston. Cut to this year and Jon Lester, some would say is the ace of the staff. He’s been spot on most of his appearances this season and last night was night was no exception, when he led the Sox to a 4-0 win over the Mariners.
It might be important to remind yourself this morning that the Celtics have home-court advantage, and they could still go 16-12 in the playoffs, 0-12 on the road, and still hold up a trophy in June.
If we had to pick one favorite moment from the Celtics' rout of Atlanta last night...
Time to bring in the big guns. We need what's left of the 2004 Red Sox to make a conference call from the Bronx. We need Terry Francona talking to Claude Julien, David Ortiz talking to Zdeno Chara, Curt Schilling talking to Tim Thomas. Call Dave Roberts and Kevin Millar and get them involved, too. Maybe even Curtis Leskanic is available.
