If you thought the day after an epic sports fail wouldn't produce even more news, you'd be wrong. A day after being eliminated from the playoffs in a dramatic, gut-wrenching, uniquely Red Sox fashion, the team and manager ended their collaboration in a seemingly amicable way. A press conference doubleheader on Friday confirmed the end of Terry Francona's tenure as manager after eight seasons.

-- Believe it or not, some people think it's stupid to pay $500 for a "season pass" to a bar... [The Lead Graf]
Andy Warhol was misquoted! Turns out, what he meant was that in the future, everyone would be the Red Sox shortstop for 15 minutes. Or maybe he just meant Nomar Garciaparra, who will reportedly come to Fort Myers today for a press conference in which he'll sign a minor league deal, put on a Red Sox cap, retire and take a job with ESPN as an analyst. Or be packaged with Mike Lowell, we're not sure.
Penny, Bowden overwhelmed by Yankees
The Red Sox ability to beat the Yankees has evaporated, and after Friday's almost indescribable 20-11 loss, the Yankees look unstoppable. It pains Bostonist to type such heretical words. PatriotLedger.com called it "one of the worst pitching performances in franchise history." You wanna argue with that?
Remy's back! Almost! The beloved Sox announcer and NESN made it official that he'll be back in the booth Friday night at Fenway when the Sox play the Yankees. He did a pop-in at Fenway last week after spending most of the season recovering from cancer surgery and subsequent depression, got shown all kinds of love by the fans, and now is ready to come back. Probably on a limited basis at first, so no need for Dennis Eckersley to go away just yet - it's the best of all worlds.
It's tied. But not in the way you'd expect. Sure, Ray Allen had a good shooting night, and Rajon Rondo notched his third triple-double in the playoffs - those are the kinds of things you expect to see in a win, especially one as lopsided as last night's 112-94 triumph.
According to NESN, Red Sox commentator Jerry Remy will take an indefinite leave to recover from the cancer surgery he underwent last fall. Remy hopes that his experience with lung cancer will discourage others from smoking. He appreciates fans' concern.
Can Bostonians ever get enough news about competitive athletics? In a word, no. Bostonist told you all about the Saturday hapsfrom the TDBNG, Tampa and the track. Yes, there is more to tell.
Sometimes, it takes a little while to remember how tense playoff hockey can be. When the Canadiens tied the Bruins 2-2 late in the second period last night, it all came back to us. Phil Kessel and David Krejci had staked the B's to a 2-0 lead late in the first.
The Boston Red Sox announced that they will unveil a new team logo and new alternate uniforms during a press conference Thursday, the Herald reports. The current logo has been the unchallenged symbol of the team since the seventies. And now that there's a new contender, who's going to break the news? Jerry Remy, Jim Rice, and, um, Manny Delcarmen. Sending Manny Delcarmen to break the news about a new Sox logo is like sending a nurse with epilepsy to remove the bandages on a head wound. But we are pretty psyched about Jim Rice, whose appearance at the event might remind baseball writers of what he looks like: a Hall of Famer. Ahem. Those interested in attending the unveiling can email redsoxnation@redsox.com by 10p.m. today for a vanishingly small chance of getting an invitation.
It's time for Bostonist Sports Where Are They Now? Tonight's subject is Jason Varitek, the captain, catcher, and heart and soul of the Red Sox' 2004 and 2007 championship teams! Where is he now?
The Red Sox returned from a little trip of consequence out West on Monday and found several thousand fans waiting to welcome them back and get a taste of the victory parade planned for Tuesday. A caravan of buses rolled up to the park shortly after 5 p.m. Monday afternoon and those in attendance didn't have to wait long to see the hardware they'd been lusting after all post-season long: Tom Werner, John Henry, and...
Our long national nightmare is over. The polls are closed, the kind of people who care about this can cheer or mourn, and the rest of us (who think it's kind of ridiculous) can have a quick item to note on the offday between games 1 and 2. That's right, Red Sox Nation (shudder)! Jerry Remy is your new President! Deadspin has the best artistic take on the whole silly, silly business. It's still better...
Oh no, there's another Red Sox pitcher song - and it's only a matter of time before we see Jerry Remy rocking the air guitar to the new tune. Fresh on the heels of Daisuke Matsuzaka's "Gyroball," the Boston Red Sox pitching staff brings you "Okajima, Oki-Doki."Okajima translator Jeff Yamaguchi admitted recently that the song, well, kind of sucks when you first listen to it, but it will needle its place into your heart if...
A night after Sox pitcher Kason Gabbard completed a Cinderella-esque nine innings at Fenway Park, the spotlight fell on a different belle of the ball for a fairy tale turn on the mound. The story didn't play out the way we would have written it - it was Leo Nunez, not Tim Wakefield, who was able to celebrate on Tuesday night. Nunez bounced back from a Fenway disaster two years ago to lead Kansas City...
And we thought the days of musical Red Sox pitchers were over when Bronson Arroyo got traded. But we can't wait for July 17, when pitching sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka will release his own mix CD, "Music From the Mound" with a collection of songs that inspire and touch the hurler, plus an original track or two. You may have heard one on Monday night, when NESN gave us a few seconds of "Gyro Ball", which...
Jerry Remy summed it up perfectly last night: "Both are terrible." The Rem wasn't talking about the play on display Saturday night at Petco Park in San Diego (although at times, he wouldn't have been far off), but was discussing the throwback uniforms worn by the Sox and Padres last night. Memo to both teams: burn those uniforms now. It looked as if "The Wizard of Oz" had thrown up all over Petco Park. Boston...
It was a tense time at Fenway Saturday. Curt Schilling looked human (or worse). The Sox were suffering from a chronic case of "hitting the ball right at Miguel Tejada". Losing two in a row to the Orioles looked like a distinct possibility.
6-0. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, it looked grim for a while for Josh Beckett and the Sox. Dan Johnson broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth with an RBI single, but the Sox rallied off 2 off the Oakland bullpen in the bottom of the inning. Then Okajima and Timlin shut the A's down, and just like that, Beckett became the majors' first six-game winner in the 6-4 triumph. Bostonist hearts...
OK, OK, Bostonist feels a lot better about the Old Towne team, and not just because of a man whom will be known in these parts for a time to come (and maybe longer?), as Dise-K. (And please, don’t' go with D-Mat. Sounds like doormat, and who wants to be named after something that one would use to wipe off their dirty shoes. Wouldn't you want to be named after a nasty, distasteful, comic that...
The first series of the season is in the books and the Red Sox are on their way to Baltimore with a 2-1 record after last night's 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Of the last two games there were only a few bright spots to showcase, Jonathan Papelbon's performance being one, Josh Becket's being another. Monday's game was an all-around impressive display of offense - Mike Lowell's bat is slow...what? - and pitching. Thank the baseball gods that the Curt Schilling is pitching like Curt Schilling. We missed you last year, big guy.
