Okay, it seems that we have a hangup on Alvin and the Chipmunks, but the success of that movie suggests that children are more in charge of their parents' dollars than ever. We're not talking teenagers controlling the box office--we're talking the little critters. Further proof of that was provided when Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour was number one at the box office.

Who knew three little chipmunks could show so much strength? Alvin and company stayed near the top of the box office list this week with a #3 showing, losing only to the mighty Nic Cage (we never thought we'd call Nic "mighty," but there you go) and Will Smith (we've been calling him "mighty" for years). Cage's National Treasure: Book of Secrets had the third biggest Christmas opening weekend ever, after Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and Meet the Fockers. That's, um, good company? Other notable new-ish releases include The Great Debaters, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Anyone who questions that old phrase "idle hands are the devil's tools" ought to take a look at what happens in sports cities when the games are in desperately short supply. When no one's playing, people get ansty. They start speculating. Guessing. Predicting. Complaining - and no good can come of that.
