The 26th Annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl began today, offering Bostonians a slight reprieve from the heat with all-you-can-eat ice cream from 11 different creameries. The event runs today until 7pm, Wednesday from 11:30am to 8pm, and Thursday from 11:30am to 7pm, and adult tickets are only $8. All proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Bostonist sampled as many flavors as humanly possible to......

In lieu of running a photo today, we wanted to share with you some exciting news. Bostonist will be hosting the first ever Photo of the Day Photography Show, which will be a part of a Charity Event to benefit the Jimmy Fund that we are holding in early July. In preparation for the show, we wanted to invite all of our PotD contributors, both seasoned and new, to submit works that they would like......

--Total commuter hell broke out today with a tractor rollover that blocked the Mass Pike, along with dodginess on the Blue Line that left, according to one individual, "hundreds of people" stranded at the Airport T stop. [WHDH, b0st0n LiveJournal] --Speaking of transportation, an engineering firm has recommended the installation of 900 support anchors in the Ted Williams Tunnel to make up for the fact that some parts of the ceiling can't be inspected.......

There are days when the Red Sox remind us of the Justice League of America - that inspired creation of D.C. Comics where a number of their best superheroes ally to use their unique talents, banding together to fight evil. Sunday was one of those days. Not that the Angels are evil, per se, but they clearly represented a menace to all that is good and just, or at least to the Red Sox' division-title......

If you watched the local news, you might have heard Neil Young's "Powderfinger" coming from Peter Gammons, Theo Epstein, and a host of local musicians for the Hot Stove, Cool Music benefit concert at the Paradise. The sight of Peter and the Hot Stove All Stars rocking the "Powderfinger" tickles Bostonist's fancy, and all media outlets, the Globe in particular, praised the overall musicianship of the event. However, VickieVictoria, who took this and other......

The Jimmy Fund has been synonymous with charity in reference to the Red Sox for years. The official charity of the Sox the Jimmy Fund has donation boxes set up around Fenway Park, an annual "triple winner game" at Stop and Shop stores, and annual large donations from the team. Enter Curt Schilling. In 2004 Schilling commissioned a Red Sox chopper, which he sold to Hill | Holiday. The marketing company agreed to put the......

For those enthralled with the decorated cattle all over the city, the Jimmy Fund has created a city map with all of the 117 cows' locations. While it appears that a good number of them are grazing along Boylston Street, the rest of the statues appear to be placed along the Waterfront and Faneuil Hall area. Beacon Hill is perhaps the most sparse area on the map and Bostonist was excited to see that even......

We first came across the phenomenon of decorated fiberglass city cows on a trip out to Chicago in 1999. That year, over 300 cow statues were placed all around the city to bring delight to tourists and locals alike. After displaying them for the summer, the cows were then taken away and only to be seen again in miniature form in gift shops. The first cow parade was in Zurich in 1998 and the cow......

Some mornings, when the sky is low and cloudy and the forecast calls for rain, Bostonist purposely leaves our raincoat home in an attempt (usually fruitless) to will away bad weather. Just so, when the rain and cool temperatures persist into June (see this past weekend), we feel inclined to do warm-weather things to force summer's hand. Luckily, tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday will provide the perfect opportunity, as the Scooper Bowl will be taking place......

Massachusetts loves the Lottery - and the Red Sox. The two will now live together in scratch ticket form. Sales of the Red Sox branded $5 instant win tickets begin on April 11, 2006, the same day as the home opener at Fenway. The $2 games are about as high as Bostonist will reach when dropping some cash on a lottery ticket, but we may be alone in this. Back in January we remember reading......

You might have heard that Puma recently created an individual shoe for Red Sox superstar Johnny "Caveman" Damon. The sneakers, converted Romas, are numbered 18 and labeled with a "Johnny D", making these $80 dollar kicks look pretty fabu. What's even more fabulous about them is that for every shoe bought, Puma made a donation to UNICEF for the Red Sox centerfielder. (But isn't the official charity of the Red Sox the Jimmy Fund?) Puma......

To continue with the theme of sugar-packed fatty goodness...the Scooper Bowl is finally here. The Scooper Bowl isn't a health conscious event, but that's why Bostonist will be wearing the big pants to work starting today, June 7th thru the 9th. While it might not help you lose the weight this upcoming summer season, it will help others' health seeing as all the money (7 dollars for adults) goes to The Jimmy Fund and......

Boston Red Sox have long supported the Jimmy Fund as their official charity. Today Mayor Menino brings another Jimmy to the Hub. Jimmy Fallon will be given a key to the city later today in a ceremony officiated by Menino and Governor Mitt Romney. After Fallon’s six year stint on Saturday Night Live and countless portrayals of characters hailing from the Bay State Jimmy Fallon will be given the honor he deserves. Recurring characters portrayed......
