Republican candidate for state treasurer Karyn Polito's family, friends and supporters got 68 of the first 100 Registry of Motor Vehicles Boston Red Sox/Jimmy Fund vanity license plates. Many of the applications listed "per KPolito" and were submitted after members of the general public requested the plates. Polito got plate No. 2 while Ben Affleck paid $50,000 for No. 1 at a charity auction. Many low-number plates went to people connected to the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox. [WBZ] more ›

Every rider has to raise at least $4,200 and you very well may know somebody riding who needs your help. Just because you're being encouraged to eat some yummy ice cream for two more days is no reason to assume drinking a carbonated beverage this summer will be encouraged no matter how good it is. Yes, you read that correctly. The 28th-annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl continues today and Thursday on City Hall Plaza from Noon to 8 p.m., and benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Oh, and, the Boston Public Health Commission wants city dwellers to skip soda from June 21 to September 6. more ›

The gridiron at the opening of the annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl was simply grueling. The conditions were bleak, with the temperature in the fifties and a slight drizzle fluttering in from every which way. Most of the competition that fills the fenced-off court in previous years was gone, leaving the pavement at Government Center slick. Despite the uneasy conditions, with potential to lose one's grip, balance, or feeling in one's extremities at every turn, those with guts of steel and gullets of gargantuan strength made it out for all the tough licks and delicious hits at the Scooper Bowl. more ›

In lieu of running a photo today, we wanted to share with you some exciting news. Bostonist will be hosting the first ever Photo of the Day Photography Show, which will be a part of a Charity Event to benefit the Jimmy Fund that we are holding in early July. In preparation for the show, we wanted to invite all of our PotD contributors, both seasoned and new, to submit works that they would like to be considered to for the show. more ›

--Total commuter hell broke out today with a tractor rollover that blocked the Mass Pike, along with dodginess on the Blue Line that left, according to one individual, "hundreds of people" stranded at the Airport T stop. [WHDH, b0st0n LiveJournal] more ›

There are days when the Red Sox remind us of the Justice League of America - that inspired creation of D.C. Comics where a number of their best superheroes ally to use their unique talents, banding together to fight evil. Sunday was one of those days. Not that the Angels are evil, per se, but they clearly represented a menace to all that is good and just, or at least to the Red Sox' division-title... more ›

If you watched the local news, you might have heard Neil Young's "Powderfinger" coming from Peter Gammons, Theo Epstein, and a host of local musicians for the Hot Stove, Cool Music benefit concert at the Paradise. more ›

The Jimmy Fund has been synonymous with charity in reference to the Red Sox for years. The official charity of the Sox the Jimmy Fund has donation boxes set up around Fenway Park, an annual "triple winner game" at Stop and Shop stores, and annual large donations from the team. Enter Curt Schilling. In 2004 Schilling commissioned a Red Sox chopper, which he sold to Hill | Holiday. The marketing company agreed to put the bike on the auction block to benefit ALS and melanoma charities, but apparently 50 grand was too much for anyone to shell out for Schill's bike. This year he's trying again. more ›

For those enthralled with the decorated cattle all over the city, the Jimmy Fund has created a city map with all of the 117 cows' locations. While it appears that a good number of them are grazing along Boylston Street, the rest of the statues appear to be placed along the Waterfront and Faneuil Hall area. Beacon Hill is perhaps the most sparse area on the map and Bostonist was excited to see that even... more ›

We first came across the phenomenon of decorated fiberglass city cows on a trip out to Chicago in 1999. That year, over 300 cow statues were placed all around the city to bring delight to tourists and locals alike. After displaying them for the summer, the cows were then taken away and only to be seen again in miniature form in gift shops. The first cow parade was in Zurich in 1998 and the cow craze has been featured all over the world, including New Zealand, Belgium, South Africa, and now Boston starting this week. CowParade Boston kicked off this morning with over 100 cows being placed throughout the city. Through September 5, happy tourists together with jaded Bostonians can enjoy the quirky bovines all summer. Once the exhibition ends, 50 cows will be auctioned off at the Marriott Copley Place on September 21, with the rest of the cows then being herded and sold online. All proceeds from the CowParade Boston will go to the Jimmy Fund. more ›

Some mornings, when the sky is low and cloudy and the forecast calls for rain, Bostonist purposely leaves our raincoat home in an attempt (usually fruitless) to will away bad weather. Just so, when the rain and cool temperatures persist into June (see this past weekend), we feel inclined to do warm-weather things to force summer's hand. Luckily, tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday will provide the perfect opportunity, as the Scooper Bowl will be taking place... more ›

Massachusetts loves the Lottery - and the Red Sox. The two will now live together in scratch ticket form. Sales of the Red Sox branded $5 instant win tickets begin on April 11, 2006, the same day as the home opener at Fenway. The $2 games are about as high as Bostonist will reach when dropping some cash on a lottery ticket, but we may be alone in this. Back in January we remember reading about a report by Christiansen Capital Advisors Massachusetts, which quantified the love for the Lottery - residents spend an average of $681 per person yearly on lottery games, ahead of every other state by some $250. Keno and scratch tickets lead lottery sales in 2005 and with the introduction of a Red Sox branded ticket it’s certain the Commonwealth is hoping for some increased revenues. more ›

Puma sold out of these on the first day of release, so if you want them now, better try E-bay. But if you'd rather be a superstar yourself, why not journey over to the Puma location on the waterfront and pick up a wear-tester application? Seriously, making it all the way down to the waterfront Puma makes Bostonist think we deserve a reward (free shoes). Wear testing is just like a test drive, but for four weeks, and on your feet. If you've got Cinderella feet (9 men, 7 women), Puma has some shoes for you. They'll give you access to a website where you can ask to be sent some dope test model shoes in the mail. Wear them. Rate them. And after four weeks send them back. We reccomend you zap them with a little deodorant before sending them back, if you want to stay in the program. New hip high tops in the mail every 4 weeks? Even Carrie would be jealous. more ›

Boston Red Sox have long supported the Jimmy Fund as their official charity. Today Mayor Menino brings another Jimmy to the Hub. Jimmy Fallon will be given a key to the city later today in a ceremony officiated by Menino and Governor Mitt Romney. After Fallon’s six year stint on Saturday Night Live and countless portrayals of characters hailing from the Bay State Jimmy Fallon will be given the honor he deserves. Recurring characters portrayed by Jimmy Fallon such as Pat Sullivan, Patrick Fitzwilliam, and Romney’s personal favorite of Jarret the Hamphire College best friend of Gobi (Horatio Sanz) are attributed as initiation rights for Fallon as an honorary Bostonian. Mayor Menino said in a written statement "Jimmy Fallon has done a lot to honor Boston's tradition of Irish heritage and fanatic following of the Red Sox." Fallon’s upcoming release of Fever Pitch in which he co-stars with Drew Barrymore has propelled Fallon into the Boston honorary citizen hall of fame. An impersonated Southie accent and honor given to the Boston Red Sox victory last fall made Menino and Romney feel compelled to honor Jimmy Fallon for his contribution in glorifying Boston. The ceremony is to be held this afternoon at Fenway Park where Jimmy will not only be presented with a key to the city but will also receive the winning ball from the final game of the World Series 2004. more ›
