The typewriters of two late Massachusetts-affiliated writers were recently sold at auction for a total of nearly $30,000. Jack Kerouac's last typewriter, a Hermes 3000, fetched $22,500, while a machine John Updike used got a comparatively meager $4375. Kerouac was born in Lowell and reported for the Lowell Sun, but became a famous wanderer, while Updike remained mostly settled in Mass after his stint at Harvard. Proceeds from Updike's machine will go to the NYPL. [NYT] more ›
