Jose Canseco was a Red Sox for a minute, but we're guessing that there are at least a few people in New England who would like to see the wife beating steroids advocate take a blow or two to the noggin. It turns out that we aren't the only people who think so. more ›

Bostonist has spent the early afternoon reeling over the news that Manny Ramirez tested positive for steroids. (Does that mean that 2004 and 2007 are as tainted as Roger Clemens's World Series victory in 2000? And, if Manny used steroids while he played for the Sox, whom did he share them with?) more ›

Look outside the window. Grimace. Then realize that somewhere, in a magical land known as Florida, spring is only one day away. Pitchers and Catchers Day is almost here, which means that spring is creeping closer to our frozen city. Ballplayers will be ready to welcome in the season when they finally get back to Fenway. The journey just happens to take them to Florida, Japan, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Toronto before spring finally reaches us. Why do we live in New England again? more ›

One of the most remarkable things about the Celtics' remarkable turnaround is that NBA players actually want to come here. You may remember the lure of playing in Boston almost got Reggie Miller off his couch, and now there's talk that future Hall-of-Famer Gary Payton called his agent the other night and said he'd like to come to Boston. more ›

Our familiarity with German legends is admittedly not what it's supposed to be, but we are familiar with the tale of Faust, the medieval alchemist who made a deal with the devil to acquire riches and earthly pleasures. The tale's already been updated and retold once in a baseball context, in Damn Yankees. Last night, fortunately, the offense picked him up and pulled him out of the fire. The... more ›

A conversation about baseball these days will undoubtedly involve something about this "juicing" scandal, and Bostonist ain't talkin' about these guys or this dude (he's a whole different story). Between the Balco scandal, Barry Bonds crushing home-run records, the leaked statements by Jason Giambi admitting he took steroids, and now Canseco's book it was inevitable that somewhere along the line the government would become involved. Yes, there's been much in the news, for months, abound the business that was being done within BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) - but that involved athletes in a wide sampling of sports. This congressional committee investigation (PDF) is directly targeted towards the steroid use specifically within our "national past-time". Being subpoenaed to testify are Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro, Frank Thomas and our own Red Sox ace Curt Schilling. Noticeably absent from this list is Mr. Balco himself, Barry Bonds — very interesting. Others who will also be there include commissioner Bud Selig, and Donald Fehr, baseball's union leader. more ›
