With the lockout settled, the NFL has quickly gone back to normal. Just ask Tully Banta-Cain, who is reportedly going to be released on Thursday as soon the new agreement allows and just days after having surgery.
Tim Wakefield allowed seven runs in 6.1 innings and still managed to win the 199th game of his career, as the Red Sox swept Seattle with a 12-8 decision on Sunday. Wakefield (6-3) allowed 10 hits, including two home runs, and had four strikeouts, to earn his 2,000th with Boston. Seattle lost a club-record 15th straight game.
Baltimore has had trouble beating the Red Sox (58-37) this season and Jeremy Guthrie has had trouble beating anybody. Guthrie improved to 4-13 and the Orioles snapped a seven-game losing streak against Boston with a 6-2 win on Tuesday. It's only the Red Sox third loss in July. Guthrie pitched seven innings and allowed eight hits and two runs. Boston's pitchers weren't particularly successful last night. Kyle Weiland (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. Alfredo Aceves allowed three runs on two hits in two innings. Both hits were home runs. Josh Reddick had three hits in the loss. Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered in the fifth to drive in both Red Sox runs.
John Lackey (6-8) pitched his best game of 2011, going 6.2 innings without allowing a run as the Red Sox blanked the Orioles, 4-0. Lackey's strong outing was crucial as the Red Sox offense mustered a pedestrian four runs after scoring 20 runs in two games. He allowed just three hits and one walk against seven strikeouts. His ERA dropped to 6.84 from 7.47. The Sox have won five straight games and are 9-1 in the last 10 games.
The newest of Boston's starters salvaged the Red Sox only win in their last five starts as Sunday's game in Pittsburgh went in the visitors favor by a 4-2 score. Andrew Miller (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on five hits for his first win in a Red Sox uniform. The Red Sox bullpen held the Pirates scoreless for three innings. Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard, and Jonathan Papelbon also didn't allow a hit. Paplebon eared his 14th save.
Nearly flawless pitching was necessary as Boston's offense was unproductive once more. They mustered six hits, but benefited from four Pittsburgh errors and two sacrifice flies.
Two weeks ago, if you had told us that two weeks from now(then), the Sox would be closer to catching the Yankees than they were to falling behind Texas, we'd have put you on the disabled list with flu-like symptoms. Not that we (seriously) think they're going to catch the Yankees, but it can't be denied that the Sox have been playing their best ball of the season lately, and the roll continued with an 11-5 throttling of the O's last night in Baltimore.
It sounds like Bob Ryan wants to be able to watch baseball while keeping his head buried in the sand. Steroids may be more of a Hall of Fame/legacy issue and the reason that is the case is because the history of baseball occupies a much larger place in the present and future of the game than other sports. Bostonist keeps hearing that from people like Ryan, anyway. Sox fans can still follow steroid-scandal news and a box score, Mr. Ryan. Steroids are a fact of life in baseball now, and nothing is going to change that for quite some time.
