Whatever Twitter says is always true, even if it's sad (and even if retweeting it earns us more sadness). So it seems that Razzy's, everyone's favorite Somerville dive bar (Sligo is just too much dive and too little free popcorn, not to mention the lack of karaoke), is closing up shop soon, possibly due to a landlord dispute. Viking funeral for the bar seems to confirm the news, as does BostonTweet, so it must be true. Right? [TWITTER] more ›

With news percolating recently about Aerosmith possibly replacing all-everything frontman Steven Tyler as he deals with his ever present demons, it's no surprise his name popped up in the news. When your musical cohort of 40 years says "We're gonna find somebody to get in there and fill that spot," which Joe Perry reportedly said and is actually doing, it essentially requires a response. But, Tyler responded by serenading the Rancho Mirage, California Home Depot over the loudspeaker. Tyler supposedly treated the "audience" to some classic Aerosmith tunes, and even "performed" after inhaling helium to sound like a Chipmunk. Tyler also sang karaoke at a Palm Springs, California pub. It's either going to make a trashtastic reality show, or a crappy video. more ›

Yesterday, the Museum of Fine Arts hosted a karaoke party on its doorstep. It was a collective karaoke that saw Bostonians from every corner of the city singing hits from the 80s (and one Beyoncé track) in an uncertain chorus of badly harmonized voices. The event commemorated the Boston debut of Queen (A Portrait of Madonna), Candice Breitz's video that presents footage of 30 people simultaneously singing "Vogue" a cappella. more ›

It doesn't feel like July 4 is right around the corner - we're still busily settling into summer mode. But the Boston Pops are busily putting together the details for the annual Boston's 4th of July festivities, and on Thursday it was announced that this year's extravaganza is scheduled to feature some straight-up, blue-jeans, heartland-croonin' Americana. John Mellencamp is slated to share the stage with Keith Lockhart, the Pops and whomever will be selected as... more ›

Down in the basement of the Charles Playhouse is the Playhouse Lounge. Darts on Tuesday, trivia nights on Wednesday, live music on Thursday, and karaoke on Fridays. Karaoke, some people love it, some people hate it. If you’re looking to get your sing on in the company of theatre types (front and back of house types as well as patrons of the arts), the Playhouse Lounge might be the best place in Boston to do it. Our friends tell us that it’s an absolutely smashing time at the microphone. You may be treated to the presence of players from local shows; cast members from Spamalot have been on hand recently. We’re not trying to say that it’s a good place to go if you’re looking to be discovered – we doubt Simon Cowell will be in attendance – but the Blue Men often are. Playing an indefinite stint at the Charles Playhouse just upstairs from the Lounge, the charactersblue men from the Blue Man Group often stop by with props, adding an entertaining backup to the singer on stage. The video here is not well lit, but at the end there are stills with a flash that will let you see what’s really going on. Fox’s Arrested Development, specifically David Cross’ character Tobias Fünke (a fictional Bostonian), was the inspiration for the title here; if you’re not familiar check out a summary, pictures, or a you-the-man-now-dog tribute. more ›
