Oyster lovers like Bostonist were locavores long before there was a term for it. Waiters might tell you differently, but there's really no point in eating an oyster that didn't come from nearby waters. The decline in freshness and quality happens very quickly. Massachusetts is blessed with many of the nation's finest oyster beds—cold water oysters are the best—and few can compare with those of Duxbury's Island Creek Oyster Company, which is now opening a restaurant in Kenmore Square. The store goes up in late summer, which gives them time to get the kinks out before Semptember and the start of oyster season. [Grub Street Boston] more ›

When Red Sox owner John Henry robbed the cradle earlier this year, we had no idea that it was also a headhunting expedition. According to the Herald, Henry has replaced longtime Red Sox vice president Janet Marie Smith with Linda Pizzuti, his wife. Smith was the one who kept Fenway Park from being bulldozed, hatching the series of improvement plans that gave us the seats on the Green Monster and the generally pleasant seating atmosphere in the 97-year-old ballpark. Pizzuti? Well, she's married to John Henry, and she used to work for her family's development firm, building condos. Bad news for the Kenmore area, where Sox-owned parcels could easily be transformed into enormous, hideous luxury buildings? Probably. As one source told the Herald, "Janet Marie was told to go because Linda’s taking over the whole damn place." [Herald] more ›

We've seen the dinosaurs of our city, aging restaurants like Great Bay, Aujourd'hui and Icarus, go down this week, felled by the figurative dust cloud of the recent recession. Great Bay closed its doors this weekend; Aujourd'hui, in the Four Seasons, will become a private function room later this month; Icarus will close on July 1. All have cited the economy as a major factor in their decision. more ›

Global warming protesters mixed their messages today when a mannequin bearing the cryptic legend "THE REAL DUMMIES EVICT PEOPLE & CAUSE CLIMATE CHAOS" was locked to the Bank of America in Kenmore Square, prompting, as usual, a bomb scare and an evacuation. Credit for the prank was taken by Mannequins for Climate Justice, a group so obscure that it doesn't even have a website. (Not even a Facebook group.) Cops defused the alleged hoax device in a maddeningly dull fashion while shutting down traffic throughout the square for an hour and a half. more ›

Last night, this Bostonist tagged along with Christine Liu, Citysearch's Boston editor, as she scarfed down bevy of one- and five-dollar deals at upscale restaurant Great Bay. For one dollar a piece, we received a plate of tater tots, a plate of onion rings, and a plate of grilled cheese nibbles, made with crusty bread and perfectly melted cheddar cheese. more ›

Tonight, vampires ditch their fangs for dentures of the undead whist acting like witches, and ghosts disguise themselves as bats disguised as rabbits. Be not surprised if even the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square shines just a teensy but more orange than usual this night. more ›

Japanese restaurants can get pricy pretty fast - sushi adds up. But Fin's Sushi + Grill (in Kenmore Square and Cleveland Circle) has a fantastic bento lunch special that severely cuts down on the cost. more ›

When a fast-food restaurant has a name like UBurger, the first choice is, obviously, to order a hamburger. And UBurger definitely has plenty of choices when it comes to burger toppings. But the hidden delicacy on the menu is the chicken. more ›

Some Bostonists found out about this the hard way--by actually being on the green line and having our drivers announce "last stop Government Center"--but the Green Line is closed between Park Street and Kenmore Square this morning after two trolleys collided at Boylston. One trolley rear-ended a stopped trolley, and one car derailed, according to the Globe. Not only were legions (including some Bostonists) made late for work, but the Globe reports nine people complained... more ›

--Where have all the gay bars gone? Robert David Sullivan writes that we should be concerned about their disappearance: "In the Boston area, many of Harvard Square's bookstores, Kenmore Square's student eateries, and myriad other places that guaranteed a diverse urban experience have closed their doors, replaced by a far more uniform lineup of bank branches, chain stores, and upscale restaurants." A must-read. [Boston Globe] --If you haven't noticed with the cold temperatures and long... more ›

Too stuffed with turkey to do much else on Thursday night, we took in an ample amount of ABC's Thursday night television: "Ugly Betty," "Grey's Anatomy," and a "sneak preview" (read: kind of sort of why don't they just call it the season premiere?) of season two of "October Road." The last in the lineup has been oft-maligned since it made its series debut last year, and EW.com recently pondered whether it deserved a second... more ›

Those offerings include theater that will show WGBH programming, and a top-notch recording studio.... more ›

Harold Madison Jr., also known as Mr. Butch, died Thursday morning after his scooter crashed into a pole in Newton Square. Madison was pronounced dead at Brigham and Women's Hospital a short time after the accident occurred, according to Regeneration Tattoo, the Allston tattoo and record shop whose staff has long looked out for and after Mr. Butch. more ›

Rumors are flying today about the possible death of Mr. Butch (Harold Madison, Jr.), the former "King of Kenmore Square" exiled to Allston in the mid-1990s. According to the unconfirmed stories reported on message boards today, the homeless man/local musicians/unofficial face of Boston was riding on a scooter this morning when he was involved in a collision with a car. His Wikipedia and MySpace have already been updated to announce the news. more ›

If you take the D-line, all we can say is - sorry, you’re kinda screwed until August. But, don’t despair. We’re here to help you. If you’re crafty and lucky, you’re only a little bit screwed! That’s right! Remember when the new Charlie cards came out and everyone was all, "This sucks! I never take a bus. Why do I am I forced to pay for a service that I never use?" Now you can... more ›

John Waters will speak at BU's Tsai Performance Center on Tuesday, April 10, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are free, but you have to get them from the Barnes & Noble at Kendall Kenmore Square. John Waters used to provoke fear and terror in the plain-vanilla types. The mere mention of his name would have people thinking of transvestites, poop-eating, poop-mailing, cha-cha heels, and Tab Hunter. Now, Waters is almost cuddly, if a guy who wears... more ›

Gearing up for July 4th festivities reminds us a bit of what it was like being a kid. The spectacular event that is the fireworks display has always been something Bostonist looks forward to every year. So maybe we're getting a little nostalgic for the backyard BBQ, sparklers and snakes, and slip and slides. And Summer Camp. But sometimes it rained; we couldn't go outside and play. Those times called for a little bit of the Movie Loft on TV 38. As the slow march back to an independent station begins for UPN 38 we find YouTube is now playing host to someone's old recording of Dana Hersey in his off-beat reporting show "We Don't Knock." Not only will today's video make you miss the good old days of TV 38, fashionable blue leather jackets, and big bangs, you may even miss the Rat and what was pre- Hotel Commonwealth Kenmore Square. When UPN 38 goes back to an independent we're crossing our fingers for two things: They bring Sox games back over-air, at least now and again, and that the Dana Hersey will start co-hosting the Phantom Gourmet. more ›

We don’t really know what’s going on with the New York folks. They’re always up to something crazy. We thank Michael Malice who’s let us become his partner for “outside New York.” Now you can find the New York crazy conversations at NewYorkOverheard.com, while in Boston check in with us (your ears permitting) every Thursday for what nutso conversations we’re overhearing. Join the fun by sending in the things you overhear on your commute,... more ›

Baby its cold outside. The weather has brought us temperatures that we’re not quite ready to handle. Bostonist doesn’t want to go outside and find our next meal. Sitting in our apartment we’re deciding if we’re going to venture out and sit in a toasty restaurant to dig up dinner or if take out or, better yet, delivery is in our future. Where do we turn? The internets of course. Two new services have made... more ›

Benjamen Walker's Theory Of Everything is actually a radio show broadcast on the Boston College based WZBC. Often compared to This American Life, Benjamen Walker's Theory Of Everything is a show that brings stories such as American Exceptionalsim, Kenmore Square, and the Cost Of Living to public attention. A combination of politics and history and sprinkled with some radio drama Benjamen is one of the few men pioneering on the radio and podcasting! more ›

It would be a complete lie if Bostonist said the Bill Simmon's column on ESPN.com's Page 2 wasn't a catalyst in our becoming more involved with this blogging + sports + (pathetic) attempts at buffoonery being funny endeavor. The weekly dispatches of obscure pop-culture references entwined with what are essentially rants about the sports world are one of the more common shared pleasures among the true, hard-core, sports fans (that spend their 40 hours... more ›

For a city that welcomes hundreds of thousands of college students each fall, Boston sure makes it hard for these students to throw a party. An article in the Herald today announced that a new “keg-tracking system” will be going into effect to keep tabs on all the barrels that kids are buying in the city. When Bostonist first read the headline, we expected to see tracking devices a la Martha Stewart’s ankle bracelet attached to our fine barrels of lager. But, this is Boston and technology is never as up-to-date as one might think; once given the okay from the Boston Licensing Board, the new tracking system will make every single liquor store call police and report who bought a keg. This phone call, e-mail or fax has to be made immediately after the sale of the keg and include the name, address, and D.O.B. of the buyer. (When Bostonist last picked up a keg at good ol’ Blanchards, we were waiting for a background check to be issued and list of references required before we could take the keg home.) more ›

The Boston Globe featured an article today about the phenom known as "Missed Connections" on craigslist's boston edition. Now, Bostonist has been known to check the Missed Connections section daily, for hopes that someone noticed us on the T (not really) and because they are ridiculously funny most of the time. According to this article, Missed Connections has actually made a match. In September 2003, Jared Bibler laid eyes on Elisa Stead at the Kenmore... more ›

While most Bostonians are nursing a huge Irish hangover this afternoon, others are looking for something to do this weekend. Bostonist has scanned the scene and come up with some options for you. March Madness hits the Worcester area this weekend, with the first round of playoffs held at the DCU Center (since when did it change from being "The Centrum"?) where games are already in progress. A few of today's teams include Big East... more ›

Of all the bars in the Kenmore Square area, An Tua Nua has provided Bostonist with some of the most eye-opening moments in Boston this year. Despite the trench coat mafia bouncers, shootings, death threats from belligerent sullies, and corny BU kids, Bostonist keeps coming back to this corner bar because the bartenders and waitstaff are pleasant. Today, traditional Irish food is on the menu as well as an Irish band at An Tua... more ›

Since 1940, the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square has become a fixture in the Boston skyline. Despite being dark much of the winter, a new and improved Citgo Sign will be ready for Red Sox opening day and will flash when a home run is hit. Repairs were delayed until after the World Series. more ›

Tonight, Bolton native, Koren Zailckas, is discussing her highly-acclaimed first book, Smashed: A Drunken Girlhood. With her first sip at 14, emergency room visit at 16 to have her stomach pumped, and drunken college nights of waking up in someone else's bed the next morning, Zailckas stopped drinking at 22 and started writing her story. This is a cautionary tale for all women who drink, not necessarily who are alcoholics, but who have ever drank... more ›

The Mayor gave no advice on this one but he seems pretty serious about his threats. After last year's Superbowl celebration that killed one man and the tragic death after the Sox beat the Yankees in Game 7 in October, the Boston Police need to step it up even more this year. The local students could also grow up a bit and realize that climbing a tree or flipping a car is not a great way to celebrate...let's show the rest of the country that Boston can be classy, just like the Patriots and their win on Sunday, huh? more ›
