James J. Auerbach, 68, and Thomas Frank Barnes, 38, both of Natick were arrested after postal inspectors in Shrewsbury and Natick and Framingham police found 14-15 pounds of marijuana. A drug-sniffing dog checked the package, which police say was sent in the mail from California, and police began surveillance outside the post office. Auerbah picked up the pot and brought it to the Natick apartment he shares with Barnes. Police arrested Auerbach there and found another six pounds of pot, $50,000 in cash and a gun. The drugs are reportedly worth about $100,00. Both men are charged with possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute and conspiracy.Auerbach faces additional weapons charges and has prior convictions. Michael Todd, the 28-year old bass player for the band Coheed and Cambria, reportedly confessed to robbing a Walgreens Pharmacy shortly before the band was set to open for Soundgarden at the Comcast Center in Mansfield on Sunday. Todd's bail was set at $25,000 cash and the band will continue to tour without him. Todd showed a pharmacist a message on his Blackberry saying he had a bomb and demanded pain pills. He took six bottles of oxycodone and fled in a taxi to his band's tour bus in Mansfield. Attleboro police contacted Mansfield Police with a description of the taxi and Todd based on witnesses and surveillance video. Todd denied he was involved until he was shown pictures. Todd has a prior record. He pleaded not guilty to armed robbery and possession of a class B substance. His next court date is August 9. [Globe] more ›

A Middlesex grand jury indicted a Lowell police officer on Thursday for raping two prostitutes and soliciting prostitution from others. The alleged rape and soliciting incidents happened while the officer was on duty. He was working the overnight shift when he began soliciting prostitutes beginning in 2009. He allegedly told one victm she could avoid arrest by having sex with him. [Globe] more ›

Michael Varano, 52, of Bridgewater was arrested, for robbing the St. Thomas Aquinas parish center in Bridgewater, for the second time in three months for breaking and entering and larceny on Friday. His 11-year old son was with him during the robberies. Varano was arraigned on April 6 on 49 charges after breaking into 16 homes. During one heist, he brought his 4-year old daughter with him. Two people were arrested in connection with the biggest fraud scheme in MBTA history. Gloria C. Escobar and Andres M. Townes face charges of larceny over $250 and conspiracy to commit a crime in Salem District Court today after producing unauthorized MBTA passes - "ghost passes" - and selling them on Craigslist or other ways. Attorney General Martha Coakley said the scheme cost the T and taxpayers close to $5 million since 2007. more ›

Amy Bishop was indicted on capital murder and attempted murder charges for her involvement in the 2010 killing of three University of Alabama Huntsville professors. She allegedly shot three other faculty members. Bishop allegedly killed her brother in 1986 in Braintree. She was indicted for first-degree murder by the Norfolk district attorney’s office in June. A Bridgewater man allegedly brought his 4-year-old daughter with him when he robbed one of the several houses he's accused of breaking into. Phillip Depasquale, 39, was arrested Tuesday night after a high-speed car chase on Cape Cod. Depasquale was added to the State "Most Wanted" list after suspect allegedly kidnapping a Hopkinton woman with disabilities, making her withdraw money from an ATM, and abandoning her in a trailer overnight in a snowstorm on January 26. He was driving a stolen car and was caught after crashing into a tree. He faces 17 charges related to his arrest including breaking into a motor vehicle, larceny, and failure to stop for a police officer. [Globe] more ›

-- Deshawn James Chappell was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at Chelsea District Court after being arrested for allegedly killing Stephanie Moulton of Peabody. Chappell lived at a North Suffolk Mental Health Association group home in Revere where Moulton worked as a senior counselor. He allegedly attacked her at the group home before taking off with her. Moulton was found dead behind the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn on Thursday. Her car was found in Dorchester and was covered in blood. Police didn't disclose how she died. A Peabody man is dead after apparently hanging himself with his own pants in a holding cell yesterday at Salem District Court. No foul play is suspected. According to the Essex County District Attorney's office, Harley L. Sawyer, 40, took his own life after pleading guilty to a larceny charge from 2006. and receiving a year of probation as a sentence. Court officials found an outstanding warrant on Sawyer from Texas for a probation violation. Sawyer reportedly wished to go to Texas to deal with the warrant before his suicide, his lawyer John Morris said. State police, Salem police, and the Trial Court are investigating the case. --For the third time in recent weeks, Quincy police have arrested people on drug charges who allegedly brought their children to apparent drug deals. On Thursday, a 21-year old Hyde Park woman brought her 4-week-old baby boy with her while making an alleged heroin delivery. Police allege the suspect admitted to having heroin hidden in her underwear when officers confronted her. The woman and a man who accompanied her were both charged with heroin trafficking. The baby was taken to Quincy Medical Center and police notified the state Department of Families and Children.
