If you thought the day after an epic sports fail wouldn't produce even more news, you'd be wrong. A day after being eliminated from the playoffs in a dramatic, gut-wrenching, uniquely Red Sox fashion, the team and manager ended their collaboration in a seemingly amicable way. A press conference doubleheader on Friday confirmed the end of Terry Francona's tenure as manager after eight seasons. more ›

Larry Lucchino is certain the Red Sox will bounce back from the 2010 season, which he called a "disappointing season" on Tuesday. The first step in a 2011 rebound is the bullpen. Literally. more ›

With the Bruins and Celtics in slump mode, and Bill Belichick losing his mind for the first time since he was HC of the NYJ, local sports fans must have been waiting for some painful news from the Red Sox. On Monday, the Sox announced a 2010 ticket price increase averaging close to 4%. Larry Lucchino described the increase as "the second lowest average percentage price increase over the past 15 seasons with the exception of last season, when we implemented a price freeze across the board for all categories.” Thanks, Larry. Fans seem to disagree. more ›

A Red Sox hat is ubiquitous. (Note to Yankees fans: That means lots of people wear them in lots of places.) Sox fans, young and old, near and far away, wear them. Celebrities flaunt them even when they are celebrities we don't want sporting Sox gear. Stores are filled with them for us to buy. And, as we all know, there are many of them to choose from. There is now another hat to pick from. Why, in the name of Dr. Charles Steinberg, do we need a watermelon scratch-n-sniff Sox hat? Is there a reason for this abomination? Theo? Larry? Mr. Henry? Can someone explain this to Bostonist? more ›

It felt great for a second or two, flipping the pages of the local dailies to check in with the Bruins. Win, win, shootout win, come from behind win, win...and then that Monday night game against the Capitals happened. The Bruins came back home to Boston last night a little humbled, but we'd hoped that they were ready to kick it up a notch and not make absolute fools of themselves again deliver a quality game against Florida. more ›

Your 2007 World Champion Red Sox continued their celebratory tour with a visit to the State House yesterday. The event was hosted by Governor Patrick and numerous elected officials. Both (!) trophies were prominently displayed on the front lawn of the State House, the golden flags matching quite nicely with the gleam of the famous golden dome. Governor Patrick kicked off the event, and while his oddly-accented proclamations made some chuckle (JAAYYsun VARRRiTECCKK), his enthusiasm... more ›

OK, we're as excited as anyone about the first game of the Boston-Anaheim ALDS. We'll get to that in a second. But let's begin by trying to imagine how thick the tension must have been within a conference room in the catacombs of Fenway Park recently, when Theo Epstein allowed Dan Shaughnessy to sit down and talk baseball. Seriously! After the columns and the gorilla suit, the jabs and the barbs, this was a matchup... more ›

-- Red Sox fans got their first real regular-season glimpse of their $147 million team on Wednesday night, as Boston handed Kansas City a 7-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium. Jason Varitek got his first hit of the regular season with a single in the fourth, JD Drew's stepping up, Kevin Youkilis hit the team's first home run in the seventh and Josh Beckett (five innings, two hits, five strikeouts, four walks) put in a decent... more ›

Apparently it isn’t enough that there is a Dunkin’ Donuts on nearly every block around Boston, and in some cases two. Two new Dunkies are set to open at Fenway Park.

Fenway faithful waited 86 years for a Red Sox championship. Today, another long wait is over, as Red Sox fans and all visitors to Fenway Park can now finally enjoy a cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee at Red Sox home games and other Fenway events… "Just as visits to Fenway Park are a way of life in New England, so too are visits to Dunkin' Donuts," said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino.
True dat Larry, double true. Bostonist is a little skeptical about is the assertion that we’ve been waiting for Dunkin' to make an appearance inside the ballpark, and equating it with the 86 year drought. It would be great if they would sell beer to us after the 7th inning or if the Fenway Franks tasted as good as when we were kids, but truthfully we haven’t once thought “man I wish I could go to Gate B and get myself a TurboIce right now. more ›

The Olde Towne Team has yet ANOTHER problem... and this one is big! The Sox are now going into litigation in order to keep the baseball that was used to get the final out of the 2004 World Series when Edgar Renteria (yep, that Edgar Renteria), then of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit a chopper up the middle that was snagged by Keith Foulke, and flipped to first baseman Doug Meintkiewicz to give the... more ›

If Bostonist could paraphrase the infamous words of Colonel Jesop in the movie A Few Good Men, "You weakened Red Sox Nation today Larry Lucchino, that's all you did." Theo is gone, and the Boston Red Sox are without a General Manager. In what will go down in history as one of the supreme boffo manuevers in the Boston Red Sox checkered history became "official-official today" when Theo Epstein held his farewell press conference with... more ›

Last week Bostonist was all in a tizzy over the idea that the Red Sox wouldn't be able to work out a deal to keep General Manager Theo Epstein here in Boston. His contract for the past three years was going to end today, but there was lots of negotiating the past few weeks to have Theo stay with the Sox. Well, Bostonist awoke this Monday morning to see a nice article stating that according to some MLB sources, the Sox and Theo came to an agreement with a three year contract keeping him here through the 2008 season. The deal was going to make Epstein one of the best paid GMs in the league. more ›

After bringing home a Superbowl title and a Worlds Series win, Boston sports teams have had an excellent year. As we grow closer to the one-year anniversary of the Reverse of the Curse, Boston sports players have been confusing the hell out of Bostonist this past week. The Patriots training camp started up today with some big gapping holes in their defensive lineup. Last week, Tedy Bruschi decided to opt out of this season... more ›
