There was a time and a place when Bostonist kept missing upcoming shows in the area because we were too busy to pay attention. Along came Tourfilter. A locally based website (now with worldwide reach) that allows us to take a look at upcoming shows based on the information provided by the venue. Each and every day they let us know who's coming to town, where they'll be, and which of our friends are tracking the bands. Recommendations, suggestions, and tracking hits help find out what might be this week's hit that we've never heard of before. Suggestions, of course, are always welcome – and since we first reported on them significant changes have been made to improve the site for the better.

Here we are half way through the festival of lights. Weary after weeks of overplayed Christmas music and burnt out on Adam Sandler and the "Dreidel, Dreidel" song, Bostonist finds ourself craving some good 'ol Hebrew hip hop. Some down home funky Chanukah rap. So, before we light another candle on the menorah, we've got to break out Chutzpah's "Chanukah's Da Bomb" and los Hip Hop Hoodíos' "Ocho Kandelikas."

For a while Bostonist had been hoping that El Oriental de Cuba in JP would be open a bit later. After downing some pints at Behan’s a walk over to El Oriental for some mashed plantains is much better than that foreman grilled cheese we end up making after bars close. Alas, they were only open on weekends until 10 p.m. Until yesterday that is, when El Oriental was firebombed overnight. Bostonist loves ethnic food and for Cuban food in Boston this little spot - located "the other way" down Centre St., away from the cute little shops that define the increasingly gentrified JP - can’t be beat. The Boston Globe recounted statements from Maura A. Hennigan, who heard the Molatov cocktail-like fire starter had been tossed through the window of El Oriental around 3:30 a.m. This unexpected arson has taken the neighborhood by surprise and left the Cuban community in Jamaica Plain distraught, waiting for the restaurant to rebuild. Nobel Garcia pledged to the community and reporters that he would reopen the restaurant he’s owned for the last 6 years. Garcia said he had no enemies and didn’t know who could have done it. The food is great, the space itself left a little something to be desired, but nothing to firebomb over.

She’s been around the slam scene in Boston for a number of years and has been pondering her continued participation on the Boston area Slam Team (yeah, Bostonist didn’t really know there was a regional team either).
