Bostonist is skeptical of Beacon Hill's "efforts" at making casinos a reality in Massachusetts. Local media outlets keep saying a compromise is almost certainly probably a tentative reality. Maybe.
Perhaps motivated by Dianne Wilkerson's weak defense of her money accumulation, House Speaker Sal DiMasi has announced that he will resign from the Legislature effective Tuesday (or tomorrow, according to the Herald). DiMasi had denied rumors about his resignation last Friday, and maintains that he now steps down with his head "held high." Right, because there's always good reason to resign if you've done nothing wrong. The Globe names possible successors Robert A. DeLeo and John Rogers, who's had a scandal of his own already. Wouldn't want to give power to anyone too pure. Update: DiMasi's resignation letter.
State legislators are busy people. Once elected, they have to figure out how to keep their jobs, how to get re-elected, how to advance, and how to keep their peers from stabbing them in the back. (Presumably, they govern in the midst of all that. Oh, who are we kidding?)
The Joint Committee on Transportation has approved a bill that bans the use of using a handheld gadget while driving, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives will vote on the bill next, the Globe reports.
