The Red Sox injury bug is spreading to one of Boston's most iconic symbols, the Citgo sign that towers over Fenway Park and Kenmore Square. The sign has been in place since 1965 and is scheduled to "go dark" for about two months - Hugo Chavez must be a Yankees fan - for some repairs to the light bulbs that power it. more ›

As we warned yesterday, the somewhat surly singer-songwriter (sorry for the alliteration) Bill Callahan doesn't take kindly to requests. There would be no "Dress Sexy at My Funeral" last night at the Brattle, despite repeated shouts for it. (We like the song, but were mostly disappointed that Callahan never responded "I already do" to any "Dress sexy" requests. Ha! Barefoot, jeans, and button down is sexy to us, apparently. Also, Callahan's hair is getting long these days. We like it.) And an asshole "fan" who called for Callahan to hurry up his tuning—"I have to work tomorrow" is a pretty absurd thing to shout out at a Monday night concert, by the way—were greeted with "Well, you can go." (He didn't. Who would?) more ›

Obama? Clinton? Romney? Huckabee? Are you getting them all mixed up right about now? Try to get untangled because today is Super Tuesday and the Massachusetts Presidential Primary. Vote so you can at least weed a few of these candidates out. more ›

Gothamist learned about the craziest urban nightmare come true: A huge python found in the bathroom pipes. It was also a nightmare for some Yankees fans, as manger Joe Torre declined to come back and manage the Bronx Bombers. At least the city's attempt to give some direction to subway riders was interesting, pranksters went shirtless at the Fifth Avenue Abercrombie & Fitch and the I Heart Brooklyn Girls calendars came out. And just... more ›

The April rain is seemingly behind us, the flowers are springing, but we're not yet upon summer festival season. Soon enough we won't be able to go a weekend without a sleepless night with ringing in our ears as we spent too many hours in the heat a little too close to a bank of speakers broadcasting to the masses. Well, that or a sweet show at Harbor Lights The Pavilion. Tuesday, 5/8 Grant-Lee... more ›

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version... more ›

April Fool's Day is on the Horizon, but we ain't foolin this week. A solid line up of shows – starting with the Tourfilter DJ Night at River Gods – is ahead. It's mid-week heavy this time around so kick it like a rock star and be thankful you can sleep in on Saturday. Monday, 3/26 TourFilter Mixtape Tourfilter founder Chris Marstall will be at River Gods in Cambridge equipped with an evening full... more ›

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor is spending... more ›

Vendela Vida will read from Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name at Harvard Book Store at 6:30 pm. more ›

As if you couldn't already tell by the shouting in the bar or the shaking of the apartment building or your neighbors getting nutty in the street - the Patriots defeated the Chargers last night 24 to 21. Bostonist has long recaps for the Pats games, but this game was so miraculous that it deserves a little Redux. Judging by the pre-game stats and the power that is Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, it... more ›

On Saturday afternoon, we reconvene in that big round room in the South End, where the usual suspects will be peddling their cleverly-designed and lovingly-crafted wares: My Paper Crane and their plush groceries; Art School Dropout, who strings together vintage flotsam and jetsam into ornate necklaces; Bright Lights Little City's paper lanterns made from paper cocktail umbrellas; Vonica and her baby-animal bags; Coffee Drinker's Pacman-adorned iPod cases and wristbands; Candy Thief's extreme collars and felt-flower brooches; and loud, articulate UtiliTies from Truth Serum Productions. more ›

If you’re hiking, consider charging up your iPod, as Seattlest finds out that a man lost during a hike was found by the glow of his iPod. That cleverness seems to be devoid in cops who were using police cruiser instant messaging clients - although we imagine IMs “so are you nakie” to be included in cop shows, just for realism. If only the cops were busting the Hummer-driving jerk who made a poor... more ›

Touchdown Tommy is not happy. And how can Boston blame him? He took less money to stay in New England with the belief that the regime would continue to spend, and put a competitive product on the field. Instead, the Pats are almost 17 million under the cap. Conspiracy Theory: Was it a coincidence Brady forced the ball downfield 12+ times against the Denver secondary (which is quite good), and completed zero passes? Was... more ›

If you're not into traveling all the way to the Tweeter Center for Journey and Def Leopard, check out this week's picks. Even if you are into heading down to the big name act's show you'll need something to do the rest of the week. There's no joking about it this week. Fall is here. By the time the weekend hits it's time to break out the cider and make some pumpkin pie. We're saving that for Sunday, however, the rest of the week is for music. more ›

Bostonist used all the cyan in the color cartridge (which, at the time, still came bundled together) some five-odd years ago when we thought it really important to print ourselves the NASA Astronomy photo of the day from November 27, 2000. Type “earthlights” into google and the NASA image is still the first hit. In the web 2.0 world it was only a matter of time before someone showed us what a google map would look like at night. Peter Pesti did just that. 85,000 plus people have visited his mash up, checking out what the night brings to their neighborhood. Well, neighborhood might be a stretch. The resolution of the original Earth Lights image from NASA doesn’t have the resolution to offer the same zoom you can get in the daytime. That is to say you can see Boston on the map as a bright spot, but if you want to see street lights you’ll have to see them in daytime google. more ›

One of Bostonist’s favorite weekend activities is catching up on all those trashy MTV reality shows that we often miss during the work week. And luckily, this weekend we were able to watch the premiere episode of "The Real World Key West", which we believe will be the most mentally unstable of all the seasons. This week’s episode included the standard “seven people picked to live in a house and have their lives taped” but Bostonist also noticed that there are a couple of castmates who hail from New England. The gay cast member, Tyler, is 23, grew up in Minnesota, recently graduated from Tufts University and now resides in Davis Square with roommates. According to a recent article in the Herald, he’s pursuing television production and of course, he’ll now fall into the group of pseudo-Boston celebrities that have done reality shows. While Tyler definitely made some snide comments here and there, we enjoyed him as he threw catty comments at some of his roommates. And a hint from Tyler as what’s to come this season: more ›

One of the prime spots on the Somerville Christmas lights tour is Springfield Street between Concord Street and the Cambridge line. As luck would have it, (this) Bostonist lives right around the corner from there, so we went out a couple nights back to snap some pics. Unfortunately, our luck didn't extend to an innate ability to photograph lights at night without a tripod, so the photos below have two purposes (1) Showing people in other parts of the Boston area the Somervillionaire holiday spirit, and (2) showing teetolaers what Christmas lights look like to a booze-hound like Bostonist as we stumble home from another night of yule tide revelry. more ›

Though Bostonians may not have the rugged individualism of Mainers or the crunchy optimism of Vermonters, this week we do have a 70% chance of medium-strength aurorae. At least, that's what Bostonist heard from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), a joint collaboration between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory. more ›
