Boston is the eighth most literate city in the U.S., according to a new survey from Central Connecticut State University. We're slightly up from 2006 and 2007, but down from our 2005 high of 7.The survey ranks cities based on education level, internet access, and amount of booksellers, newspapers, and publications in the city. Despite the massive number of colleges in this city, we sucked at education, not even making the top ten in that category (or in libraries... c'mon, BPL!). Fortunately, our status as one of the few two-newspaper cities in America seems to have saved us, and we apparently have an awful lot of magazines circulating around here as well: we ranked fourth in both the newspaper and magazine categories. Minneapolis and Seattle tied for first, with DC in third and St. Paul in fourth. San Francisco rounded out the top five. Our friends in culturally cocky New York didn't even make the list, so now we've at least got something to lord over them.
