One Blizzard That Won't Make You Want To Flee To Florida

Maybe you don't want to think about anything with the word "blizzard" in it right now. We understand. Unless you've already got a flight scheduled, though, you're going to be looking at this snow for a while. But it will be warm inside Cambridge's Lizard Lounge tonight, and we expect it will get downright hot when the Blizzard of '78 takes the stage to show off their new album, Book of Lies.

STEP Fundraiser hosted by Taza Chocolate Thursday, October 25, 2007 Bloc 11 Cafe, 11 Bow Street, Union Square, Somerville 6:30 to 9 p.m., $25 suggested donation Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership can list a lot of fine reasons to extend the green line into the town that sits north of Cambridge like a jaunty sailor cap: pollution, population density, lawsuits, "revitalization". Bostonist has selfish reasons of our own, and they live in Union Square: crack-laced cream...

Like just about anyone who thought their love of music was aptly captured onscreen by John Cusack in "High Fidelity," the folks over at Paste Magazine are fond of The Music List. So we weren't terribly surprised to see (via Stereogum) that the mag created a list of the nation's best music venues, broken down into regions. The criteria, as Paste spells it out in their June issue (Parkey Posey on the cover!): We weighed...

As the saying goes April showers bring May flowers. We're willing to subscribe with that theory. April looks to be a bit soggy for us in the beginning, especially considering the current seven day forecast. That means that frolicking in the outdoors will be limited and heading into the haven of the local rock haunts will be plentiful. Lucky this week provides a host of great shows around the Boston area. Included this week is the Shoot the Moon residency at Abbey Lounge. Another one of those wonderful local bands we first heard while tuning into Exploit Boston Radio.

Because Akon obviously isn't getting enough exposure these days, Congress threw their weight around and has all but boxed the little guy out of providing radio service to rabid fans. Ever since midi files essentially died and MP3s rose from the ashes, streaming audio has been a source for many to listen to and discover new bands via the Internet. Locally, Sooz has been creating and updating Exploit Boston Radio featuring all local bands, all the time. Bostonist first discovered the Casual Lean, the Snowleopards, and Bang Camaro while tuning in to the Internet stream. But today, along with a Boston Globe article on the subject, Sooz announced that there might not be a long future for Exploit Boston Radio if the current royalty hikes take hold. They'd force a minimum of $500 in fees for even the tiniest of stations, for big stations and streams of live radio the sky will be the limit for their required royalty payment.

This week the music world turns its gaze to the party they call SXSW. A number of local bands are hitting the scene in hopes that it will propel them to some worldwide tour – or at least help them get out of that "garden level" apartment in Medford. While some eyes turn south to Texas where an immigration debate runs wild the US immigration policy has taken a toll on the local concert...

Frigid temps all week. Hot shows all week. Put them together and you've got a warm soul. Brave the cold and make it out this week, it will totally be worth it. Looking for a little inspiration while you're sitting at your desk this week? Plug in the headphones and pop on over to tourfilter to check out the HypeMachine powered mixtape. The internets ungulate more than any other of our friends. There seems to be a new kid on the block every other day with others just disappearing. It’s nice to know that some friends stick around for a while. Exploit Boston officially turned five years old today. That means it was post-boom, pre-web 2.0, and, oh, does any of that nonsense even matter? In the last five years the website has served as an events calendar (with curator Sooz), a pool of event related photographs, a radio station featuring local bands, and monthly game nights. The Exploit Boston presence has spread to a profile on MySpace, HeyLetsGo, Upcoming, and a stream of artists from the radio station tracked on Tourfilter. You can always contribute your Flickr photos to the Exploit Boston photo pool, catch up with a game of Mastermind or Apples to Apples at the game nights (next one is on February 6 at Soul Fire in Allston), or, you can always tune into the radio station and hear good local music. It’s like your very own hype machine – but only for bands in Boston, many of whom you’ll be able to checkout at a live show nearby. The radio station is set to turn four in a couple of months, and that’s more than we can say about some of the FM stations in the area (ahem. Mike?). Happy Birthday Exploit Boston.

When we're the only one in the office we like to crank the juice up to the max on the built in speakers on the computer (they suck, the rock doesn't). The week between Christmas and New Years holiday makes for five days of paid time rocking out to our favorite local bands while we listen to Exploit Boston Radio. The internet radio station is spilling over with local music to get us thinking about...

Before we begin, we'd like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of James Kim. We are not, by any means, trying to discount that tragedy by juxtaposing posts about the Kims with more light-hearted posts. It's the nature of doing a compilation such as this one: we're trying to give a full slice of the goings-on in the Ist-a-Verse: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Londonist wants you to know where to...

After justified criticism that Bostonist hasn’t been paying enough attention to local bands we’re looking fondly at the Exploit Boston concert tonight. It’s the first event they’ve been sole sponsor and it’s brimming full of local act goodness. There’ll be time enough to get surly playing your favorite State of the Union drinking game and still make it to the headliner. Only problem with that plan is you’ll miss out on the free drinks. Yep, free drinks. Exploit Boston has arranged for the first 20 people through the doors before 8:30 to get a free wet for their whistle. Get there early so you can see Uncle Shaker, from Somerville, followed by The Curtain Society from Worcester. And stay for the Tom Thumb & The Latter Day Saints (of our very own Boston and nearby Providence). Doors to the Paradise Lounge open tonight at 8 p.m., tickets are $7. Hop on over to the Exploit Boston to check out some sample tracks on Exploit Boston Radio.

In case you thought the bright-eyed youngsters over at MIT were only concerned with serious, contemplative activities like throwing pianos off rooves, Bostonist has news that will put you at ease: They also know how to cut loose, as will surely be evidenced by Saturday's first and only Time Traveler Convention.

The weekend forecast is a bit troubling with the constant fear of rain being touted by every forecaster in Boston. Unfortunately, there are a lot of outdoor events going on this weekend. Bostonist has rounded up a list of them (with the big disclaimer: weather permitting)

With a three day weekend on tap, Bostonist took a minute to give out the choicest selections (and some free tickets!!). So after enjoying the weather all day, there will be no reason to stay in at night. If your planning to drink yourself into oblivion on Monday, Bostonist salutes you.

And in Somerville at P.A.'s Lounge, a lovely, quiet show with the fantastic Ponies In The Surf headlining an 8:30 set with Micah Blue Smalldone and Mothers and Fathers. So really, your choices boil down to sludgy, poppy, or pretty. What's it going to be?
