You may not have noticed since they've been largely under the radar, but the Boston Film Festival starts this weekend at the AMC Loews Boston Common, and they have some good movies. The Boston Film Festival website has the full schedule, and Bostonist has pulled out some highlights: Lars and the Real Girl, Saturday, September 15, 7:30-9:30 Have you ever wondered what might happen if a fella bought a blow-up doll and actually fell in... more ›

After a sparse, lackadaisical August, the fall semester has arrived with a frenzied syllabus of film screenings: a slew of new documentaries, our favorite Terry Gilliam movies, a notoriously disorganized film festival, and a guest lecture from Bruce Campbell, chainsaw-wielder emeritus. Thursday 9/7 Four Eyed Monsters Two pale, artsy Brooklynites met through online personals, maxed out seven credit cards to make a movie about it, moved back in with their parents in Massachusetts, and made... more ›

Who needs advance reviews when this Bostonist's got an excuse to wear her vintage stewardess uniform to the theater? Thursday 8/17 Snakes On A Plane Jon Stewart: What's the plot? Samuel L. Jackson: Uhhh... Bad guy wants to bring down the plane... Stewart: What's on the plane? Jackson: Victims. Stewart: No no no no. Jackson: Reptiles? Stewart: Yes! Jackson: Poisonous reptiles! Stewart: Yes! Jackson: Snakes on a mother***ing plane! Stewart: They wanted to make it... more ›

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Thursday 8/3 Stolen One of the things that endears the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to us (along with the dim lighting, strict ban on electronic devices, and terse signage) is how the frames of missing paintings hang empty on the walls. (As per Mrs. Gardner's... more ›

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Opening Friday 7/7 A Scanner Darkly Waking Life Bostonist is crossing her fingers that Richard Linklater's well-cast and lovingly-animated Philip K. Dick adaptation will strike the right tone of near-future uneasiness (like Bladerunner did) and eschew chase scenes and tacked-on Hollywood endings (like Total Recall... more ›

Wednesday, June 28, 2006 Superman returns to the big-screen. Bostonist had big plans about using Super-this and Super-that to promote the contest we're running. But we can't, it's forbidden. Not too bad, we'll just Photoshop the Bostonist logo into his chest emblem. Damn. Can't do that either. Let's keep this whole thing simple. Preview the newest release in the Superman franchise, Superman Returns, next Monday, June 26, in a pre-release screening at Loews Boston Common. Bostonist will be giving away pairs of tickets to the contest – fill out your info below and you'll be notified by email if you're a winner. Some fun facts about Superman: he grew up in Smallville, Kansas – Brandon Routh (the actor) grew up in Des Moines (where they know him as BJ). The Man of Steel was born Kal-El on Krypton and is in no way related to Nicholas Cage, that's a different Kal-El. The Fortress of Solitude might be a great place to catch some relief from the heat – it's located in the Artic. more ›

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. This week, Boston's movie theaters offer a variety of giant monsters (fire-breathing turtles, radioactive lizards, skyscraper-climbing apes), smaller monsters (teenagers on myspace, paintball enthusiasts), and a terrifying alternate universe where everyone sings with R. Kelly's voice. Wednesday 4/26 King Kong & Godzilla Triple Feature A... more ›

This year attendance numbers were drastically down in movie theaters. That was the mantra being blasted at anyone who'd listen. When asked what was causing this, industry experts presented cases such as movie piracy, home movie theaters gaining in popularity, and if pressed enough, the waning quality of movies in general. If you looked hard enough or sampled enough of the releases, however, you would have seen a good number of entertaining and challenging films.... more ›

With the a Boston Film Festival going on this week Bostonist is on the lookout for anything that might give respite from the usual summertime fare at one of the local megaplexes. There are only so many indie films one can see at the Kendall, Coolidge or Harvard theaters without longing for the more comfortable seats at the Loews Boston Common. more ›

The news of a massive movie house merger got Bostonist all worked up. Where will we go? How much will we pay? We’re already paying $15 to go see a movie at the MFA on opening night, and the Loews Boston Common gets close with their $10.25 weekend admission. The announcement today that AMC plans to acquire the Loews Cineplex theatres reminded us of when Shaw's and Star merged. Bostonist can’t really tell the theatres apart when we’re inside. It’s dark, the seats sit on an impressive rake, the sound is loud. Same with Shaws and Star, except they're well lit and flat floors. No word yet on potential name changes to the Loews and AMC complex, perhaps AMC will leave a couple Loews just to make us feel comfortable. more ›

Bostonist went down to the Loews Boston Common last night to catch that space odyssey film that everyone has been talking about. Yeah, that’s right Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Much to our dismay the show had been cancelled in lieu of the little known Lucas film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Honestly we really did go hoping to catch Hitchhiker, we even checked Fandango. Seeing as they still had a couple thousand seats left for the 8:40 p.m. show, five digital screenings ran all day, we thought we might check it out rather than wait for the overpriced DVD bundle to hit shelves in the trilogy form. more ›

Obviously the $250 ticket option is a stretch for Bostonist and friends, but we're sure some of you who have been pining for years over the whole "how did Darth Vader become a bad guy?" will get your answer one week before the rest of the galaxy on the 17th. more ›
