Love can change the world. Distilling years of Roman history into a single, frenzied day of dagger-brandishing and lyre-strumming, Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea demonstrates this platitude, and also an important corollary: Love doesn't care whether the world changes for the better or the considerably worse. Poppea and Nerone are both the latter.

Love and Consequences, a memoir released last week by Margaret Seltzer (published under the silly pseudonym Margaret B Jones), which chronicles the author's difficult life story of foster families, drug running, and all around thuggin' on the mean streets of L.A., turns out to be a complete bowl of lies.

This week on "Gone Country," we found out that Bobby Brown is able to sleep and dream about himself sleeping. There's some meaning in that, but we're not sure what it is. He also had an emotional moment while visiting a children's hospital. A little songwriting happened at the end, but note that on a show in which celebrities are expected to morph into country musicians, very little performance of country music is taking place.
-- An early Valentine's Day celebration turned violent this morning when a 41 year-old Roxbury man allegedly assaulted his date in her Dorchester home with an aluminum pan. The pair had been celebrating the holiday with cocktails before they got into an argument. She was washing dishes when the argument escalated to blows. The suspect struck the victim repeatedly with the pan before police arrived. He stands charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. [BPDNews]

FNX has been on a roll lately, hosting two of the biggest indie bands on the scene right now, Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend. Both bands have a reputation for appealing to a hipster crowd, and while tight jeans, ironic T-shirts, and beards (oh-so many beards) were indeed prevalent at both shows, the main focus has been on the unique sound of both acts.

One of our favorite photogs, Richietown has been out shooting again, most recently after the wondrous ice storm that rolled through last week. While there are many things to love in this photo, our favorite was how the branches of the trees all mingle to literally blanket the sky. The perspective and lighting are also naturally spot-on. Check two of his other shots from that night, black ice and december lights. Both are fantastic and can't be missed.
On December 12th Berklee College of Music hosted a show (broadcast live for Sirius Canada) dedicated to the music of Canadian artists - rapper k-os and rockers The New Pornographers were billed as the headliners. The Canadian music scene has been on indie radars for a while now, and this show proved that the attention has been well deserved. The show began with performances by Canadian Berklee students, and while all the students showed truly stunning talent, one young woman was a standout. Fiddler Ivonne Hernandez played with heart and vigor - her fiddling was rich and complex and her love of the music apparent. Judging from these performances, the students certainly have bright futures ahead of them.
I Am Legend raked in the money, as expected. The public loves Will Smith, they love special effects, they love cute dogs, and I Am Legend gave audiences what they wanted. Peter Keough at the Phoenix went so far as to say that the dog in I Am Legend was his "favorite animal character of the year." As a result, the movie made an obscene $76.5 million on its opening weekend. Believe it or not, the kids and the stoners wanted to see Alvin and the Chipmunks, which made $45 million.
