Yesterday, the Museum of Fine Arts hosted a karaoke party on its doorstep. It was a collective karaoke that saw Bostonians from every corner of the city singing hits from the 80s (and one Beyoncé track) in an uncertain chorus of badly harmonized voices. The event commemorated the Boston debut of Queen (A Portrait of Madonna), Candice Breitz's video that presents footage of 30 people simultaneously singing "Vogue" a cappella.

Yesterday, we noted that some sources blame Alex Rodriguez for the apparent impending breakup of Madonna and Guy Ritchie's marriage. Today brings the news that A-Rod and his wife, Cynthia, are splitting up, perhaps verifying that the Madonna rumors are true. However, Jezebel points to a suggestion that A-Rod's soon-to-be ex is dating Lenny Kravitz, who's dallied with Madonna in the past. Apparently Cynthia had a "secret" of her own--that she was going Lenny's way. Check the Gawker flowchart for some clarification. The chart, while helpful, does leave out Guy Ritchie. Maybe he's just some kind of celebrity satellite orbiting this messed-up universe--or maybe he's plotting his seduction of Cynthia. Only time will tell what's next in this scandalous saga.
The North End hosted the Fisherman's Feast this past weekend in honor of Madonna del Soccorso di Sciacca. This year's event, Boston's oldest continuous Italian festival (97 years and counting!), featured the usual suspects: tons of tourists, tons of ducks, various carnival games, and food. So much food.
Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic...
He started snapping photos of religious icons while taking his son out for walks in the stroller near their Somerville home. Josh Michtom, an amateur photographer, public defender, and one of Bostonist's own, found the project to be addictive. His iconography of Somerville's Madonna statues (and other religious lawn ornaments) expanded his set of images into a 234 image set on Flickr, and last November the Somerville Madonna shop was born on the Internet. Note cards and 2007 calendars were the big sellers, both featuring images taken by Michtom. Rumor has it that Boutique Fabulous in Inman Square still stocks the note cards if you don't want to buy online.
Whether you crave oil on canvas or innovative tissue box covers, all seven hills of Somerville are ready to meet your needs this weekend, when more than three hundred artists and craftspeople will throw open their doors to the public for the 9th annual Somerville Open Studios. The venues are as eclectic as the media, techniques, and ideas on display, ranging from humble apartments in tripledeckers to St. Ann's Parish Hall (#6 on the Open...
Happy Holidays! Chances are, you're reading this the day after Christmas, back at your day job after all-too-short a holiday, and the last thing you want from us is stuff about the holidays. But that's just too bad. Because, see, here in the Ist-A-Verse, we do things ahead of time. It might be December 26 for you, but that's what you get for not checking your Favorite Local Blog on Christmas Eve. Austinist is...
The Madonna Project 2007 calendars (along with other wares) are still on sale. Somerville residents can grab their very own calendar for a discount and free delivery by the creator for a limited time. It's two bucks more plus shipping for people living outside of Somerville to get their own calendar featuring religious icons in Somerville lawns. Bostonist caught a glimpse of a billboard while heading back into Boston from the South Shore this weekend reminding us to keep the Christ in Christmas – what better way than to celebrate with images of the Virgin Mary herself. Maybe a $10 ticket for a trolley ride around Somerville to some of the most illuminated houses? Probably not, church might be a good answer, but the trolley and calendar can't hurt.
Bostonist went down to one of our favorite haunts to meet up with a couple of friends. You may know some of them; others were in from out of town. We got the announcement then that within 24 hours there would be at least one Somerville apartment whose living room would contain a stack of Somerville Madonna 2007 Calendars ready for delivery. Yeah, you read right. Somerville Madonna Calendars - and postcards, greeting cards, and magnets. All of it just in time for all your Christmas gifting needs.
The hot days of August sometimes get Bostonist to thinking about cooler climes, which caused us to do a Google image search of Antartica this evening. (Well, actually, that's not true. Toddler Bostonist recently saw March of the Penguins and it was he who wanted to see pictures of Antartica.) We never would have guessed that in that distant land, we would find a welcoming little bit of Somerville. But pictures do not lie, and the McMurdo research station at the bottom of the world has exactly the same kind of decoration in its front yard that can be found in hundreds of front yards in Somerville: a generic Virgin Mary statue. We know this isn't new or newsworthy in the strictest sense, but damn it, we think it's cool.
Local born photographer and lover of handbags has completed her Longfellow Bridge Project. Following her photography for the last few months has taken a trip around the country recent months – landing back in Boston for a brief time before the recent move to Queens. We're sure she'll bring a fresh lens to the NYC Photoblogging community. Over the last few months she undertook a project of photographing the view from the Longfellow Bridge towards Back Bay and Fenway which now contains 77 photos and a collage at Flickr. As Sara described her project
So for the next couple of months or so my evening commute will involve a walk from Kendall Square over the Longfellow Bridge to Charles/MGH. I plan to take a photo of the skyline each day and post it here. The photos were taken from January to the end of May and show the progression from the winter's short days with lights on and dusk apparent in the sky, to sunsets just setting in as the days grew longer, to the spring rains and lots of gray. This shouldn't be the end of innovative Flickr sets – check out her photos and use them as inspiration for your own sets. Perhaps a series capturing all the Madonna statues in Somerville, or a photo of the ticket for just about every concert you've attended.
