Cloverfield whupped on its competition at the box office this weekend and set a record for January. As Reel Hub noted on Friday, people couldn't decide if they loved it or hated it, which means the movie was at least interesting. 27 Dresses seemed like the kind of movie Julia Roberts would have turned down back in the days when she was shooting all those bridal movies like Runaway Bride and My Best Friend's Wedding.

--A new bill that limits--but doesn't ban--skin-shock treatments at the Judge Rotenberg Center was under discussion yesterday at the State House. The bill would "allow shocks to stop students from hurting themselves or others, but would prohibit shocks for more "minor" acts such as swearing, shouting, or failing to complete a task." The Track Girls are spreading the word from Us Magazine that Katie Holmes has received a special exemption to run this year's Boston Marathon, which will be on April 21.

Nicolas Cage mopped up the competition this weekend with the National Treasure sequel, which looked a lot like a remake of the first one. It's basically expensive kids' movie stuff. However, a friend of ours who paid to see it pointed out that those who like the ladies will see a lot of Diane Kruger in skimpy, damp clothes.

Who knew three little chipmunks could show so much strength? Alvin and company stayed near the top of the box office list this week with a #3 showing, losing only to the mighty Nic Cage (we never thought we'd call Nic "mighty," but there you go) and Will Smith (we've been calling him "mighty" for years). Cage's National Treasure: Book of Secrets had the third biggest Christmas opening weekend ever, after Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and Meet the Fockers. That's, um, good company? Other notable new-ish releases include The Great Debaters, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Marathon Monday comes but once a year. It's a day of accomplishment, inspiration, and drunken disorderly behavior. There seems to be a calm in the storm no matter what category you fall into. The father and son team of Dick and Rick Hoyt continue to amaze us year after year. If we're watching on TV or Beacon Street there's something magical about that moment when they cross the finish line or enter the peripheral vision. The challenge for Williams required her to alter her sleep schedule a bit from the normal pattern of Russian time they keep in the ISS. Regular exercise is important to astronauts on the space station as weightlessness has a decremental effect on bone density and muscle mass. Suni Williams ran the marathon in space while her sister and fellow astronaut Karen Nyberg were getting soggy in the rain on the marathon course here in Massachusetts.

As if running a marathon weren't tough enough, the participants in this Monday's Boston Marathon might have to cope with rain and cold.

This year the 111th Boston Marathon will be run, as usual, on Patriots Day. April 16th. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) will be producing the event with over 500,000 spectators, as they have since the Marathon began in 1897. The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world - the modern marathon was revived by the Olympics in 1896, but is only run once every four years. As we were looking to run a story on the 26.2 we find out from the Globe that there were about six years that the 26.2 miles was just over 1,000 yards short of the total. Road construction and reconfiguration had eliminated a couple of the curves along the way which reduced the total distance. When the BAA found out about it they backed up the starting line. The trivia about the Marathon is almost endless - there's 111 years of trivia to keep you going.

A lot was at stake last night for the Red Sox. They had to avoid a sweep from the Texas Rangers, and Curt Schilling needed to prove himself after his unfortunate first outing against the Kansas City Royals. Prove himself he did. Despite some shaky moments from reliever Javier Lopez, Jonathan Papelbon came out and got the job done, helping the Red Sox defeat the Rangers 3 to 2.

..Running the Marathon on the International Space Station. Apparently you don't have to be in Boston on Patriots Day to run in the Marathon. For the last three years the Marathon has been run in Iraq with support from the Boston Athletic Association (or the BAA - the organization that runs the marathon). This year they'll be sending trophies and a finish line tape to Kosovo for a similar endeavor. The furthest competitor this year*...

Marathon Monday for the non-runners usually involves drinking a couple of six packs and scheduling a vacation day for Patriot's Day. Making sure you have the day off, and don't get too drunk too early is important for making it through the experience as you're camped out on your friends tiny balcony or courtyard. Rhea points us to a marathon training story that's a bit more inspirational than the way we train. A Wisconsin man is determined to run the 26.6 and lose 100 pounds while training for the event. He tipped the scales at over 400 when he decided to take on the challenge. He has no expectation of winning the race, but would like to achieve his goal. Things are quiet now that the Pats won't be at the Super Bowl, so Bostonist took a little breather from the Redux. The Bruins are also off for the NHL All-Star Break. The Brattle will be screening four of the Marx Brothers classics all day New Year's Day. A Marx Brothers marathon isn't the same as a fistful of painkillers, an ice pack, or a Bloody Mary, but some laughs might make for the best hangover cure of all.
