Justin McDonald, 22, of Marshfield pleaded not guilty in Plymouth District Court on Monday to operating a boat under the influence of alcohol on Saturday when he and his passenger, Steven Z. Woods, also of Marshfield, were thrown overboard. Woods apparently drowned. McDonald allegedly admitted to having 10 beers and described himself as "a little buzzed, but pretty good -- not drunk" to police. Police found 18 empty beer cans. McDonald reportedly said "the steering wheel of the boat pulled uncontrollably to the left, throwing both he and Woods from the boat." The Fourth of July happened. The holiday weekend had drama, heat, music, fun and danger. The headline event, of course, was the Boston Pops Fourth of July Spectacular on Sunday night. Toby Keith Lockhart entertained the crowd, viewers, and the troops, the Kennedy family got a well-deserved tribute, and stuff blew up. While the Boston fireworks display went off seamlessly, an illegal fireworks display in Marshfield on Saturday put people at risk in a chaotic run for safety. The explosion reportedly started earlier than planned. More drama occurred as a whale watch ship named Massachusetts ran aground Saturday in Boston Harbor after colliding with the Devil’s Back. (The notion that a vessel called "Massachusetts" was in trouble is not lost on us.) The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating, and reports cite "pilot error" as the cause. more ›

Steven Tyler is talking about his downward spiral that was 2009 as Aerosmith readies for its 2010 U.S Tour by touring Europe and South and Central America. While 2009 was about Steven being Steven, 2010 is about the band. Or, as Tyler says, "Everyone’s got their problems and their demons, but when we get onstage and play as five, that really all goes away, and that’s really all I look at now." more ›

-- Larelle Pratt, 19 of Boston, whom police describe as "an impact player" in the local gang scene, was arrested in the Sunday night shooting of two boys in Roxbury. Pratt shot the boys, who were sitting on the back porch of a Roxbury triple decker, and calmly left the crime scene, police say. Prosecutor accounts have revealed that the 17-year-old victim of the gunfire, Eric Parson, saved the life of his 4-year-old cousin, Ferris Glover, carrying the youngster to safety despite a bullet wound. Glover underwent surgery and has been reported in stable condition. [Herald; Globe] more ›

-- An independent panel released a report today that accuses the Boston Police Department of shoddy police work, when it comes to policing itself. The panel ruled that five police misconduct cases out of 19 that it reviewed had been mishandled. Witnesses had been intimidated or ignored and leaps of logic had been used to clear cops in those cases, which the panel recommends be reexamined. The panel was formed after a 2004 incident in which a cop shot a college student to death outside of Fenway Park. The panel's findings validate some of the concerns of citizen groups who believe that police misconduct goes unpunished in Boston. [Globe] more ›
