Bostonist opened up our inbox this morning to find a message from a friend with the subject “You’re never going to believe this…” We’ll backup here and start with a preface to the story: she wasn’t going to be able to go home for the holidays. Her family exchanged gifts at Thanksgiving instead of those days of various religious, cultural, and retail significance in late December (Robertson and O’Reilly please note: for her it was a Christmas present). The smallest, most expensive gift she’d been given was a shiny new video iPod.

Located on Mass Ave. in Cambridge between Harvard Square and Porter Square, Cambridge Common is a pub-grub beer-bar that caters perfectly to its college-aged crowd. This isn't an upscale place, but Charlie Christopher, owner of Christopher's, Toad, and West Side Lounge, has been keeping his Red Line crowd happy for years with high-quality, low-priced food. Busy almost any night of the week Cambridge Common's patrons range from music geeks waiting to enter the Lizard's Lounge downstairs, to law students just looking for a pint before finals.
Samuel Adams is introducing a new beer to its family. Celebrating Boston's 375, Sam Adams released for "draft only" a Colonial Ale at the BeerSummit Octoberfest, on tap at the Tour Center in JP. What followed was an advertising campaign wishing Boston a Happy Birthday and conincidentally placing the beer on tap at a lot of Boston's beer friendly local bars. The much publicized Boston 375 Colonial Ale was a hit in the limited locations it was served and a second round was released. Bostonist has found it over near Faneiul Hall (where a statue of Sam Adams stands and the yearly Jim Koch dunk occurs), at the Thirsty Scholar in Somerville (we had a heated debate at the tour center about which side of the line T.S. was on) and recently down at the Joshua Tree in Davis Square. 375 was told by Northeastern Co-op intern at Sam Adams that the brewmasters tried to brew it “more like Sam Adams would have brewed beer,” it uses more molasses in fermentation that sugary malt like modern beer.
Donating doesn't have to be a drag! Why not get a good feeling in your heart and stomach as you donate in style? The victims of Hurricane Katrina get a part of your check, and in return for your donation, you won't feel bad for paying a little extra for a night out. A number of different donation dinners have been springing up all over New England. Tonight there will be an entire Cape Cod...
The Kinsale Irish Restaurant and Pub is named after a small Cork City in Ireland. It is the sister bar of Desmond O'Mally's in Framingham and both restaurants claim to recreate a warm Irish feel, as the interior was actually designed and built in Ireland. Bostonist felt a little apprehensive because while Ireland is known for great beer, talented writers, and beautiful country sides, their authentic food leaves a lot to be desired. Located in...
With the weather cooling off this week and the end of summer fastly approaching, Bostonist was please to see that the restaurant, Noir, is keeping summer alive with a Tequila Fiesta tonight; $25 dollars will get you a taste of several different upscale tequila brands in margaritas as well as other tequila-themed drinks. If you've never enjoyed the experience at Noir, it is located in the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. If you can't make it over to Cambridge tonight, but still want to enjoy the warmer weather and ability to find a parking space before all the college students return, head over to the Sunset Cantina on Comm. Ave; it is home to the largest selection of tequilas in Boston, and the bartenders there can make almost any type of margarita your heart desires. (Why is the Sunset Cantina better than its brother bar, the Sunset Grill, in Allston? Outdoor seating, of course.) Now only if the weather could stay warm year round.
Near neither Harvard, nor a garden, Harvard Gardens boasts a great singles scene and a warm romantic candlelit atmosphere. Located off the Charles MGH T-stop this Beacon Hill location is right outside of the Mass General Hospital. As a note, the Harvard Gardens' website is a tad bit disorganized. The directions page is blank, save for a MapQuest map. The menu page has navigation buttons only, an included the purported "Nightly Specials" page filled with...
Puma sold out of these on the first day of release, so if you want them now, better try E-bay. But if you'd rather be a superstar yourself, why not journey over to the Puma location on the waterfront and pick up a wear-tester application? Seriously, making it all the way down to the waterfront Puma makes Bostonist think we deserve a reward (free shoes). Wear testing is just like a test drive, but for four weeks, and on your feet. If you've got Cinderella feet (9 men, 7 women), Puma has some shoes for you. They'll give you access to a website where you can ask to be sent some dope test model shoes in the mail. Wear them. Rate them. And after four weeks send them back. We reccomend you zap them with a little deodorant before sending them back, if you want to stay in the program. New hip high tops in the mail every 4 weeks? Even Carrie would be jealous.
Sure. That and a pair of testicles. Lace up your bowling shoes! Tonight Coolidge Corner Theater is having a screening of the oddball Coen Brothers' bowling hit The Big Lebowski. It's a nine dollar entrance fee, unfortunately that doesn't come with a White Russian, but there will be a pre-screening bowling match, along with Lebowski trivia and Lewbowski themed rewards for the best bowling shirt in the crowd. Expect to see some interesting folks at...
Once upon a time there was a fourth major sport in Boston - it was called Hockey. 301 days of negotiations, bickering between the players association and the owners, one arena name change, and a year-long collective yawn from hockey fans have finally culminated in a new hockey deal. Those were the lowlights.
Bostonist doesn't recall the local shopping mall as an unsafe location growing up in our teen years, but in Holyoke no one under the age of 18 will be allowed into the local mall (after 4 p.m. on weekends) without parental accompaniment or proper identification. The reported problem is that large "gangs" of children shoplift and their presence is scaring away older clientele from the mall. The mall claims that since the policy was implemented,...
Located in Harvard Square, Phatt Boys is a new restaurant that opened up offering "full-flavored food and spirits." With a name like Phatt Boys and beer called "Phatt A** Ale," this isn't a trendy upscale Harvard Square Restaurant. Located next to Fire and Ice, the bar boasts a spicy mix of BBQ style meals. An easy hop off the Red Line and across the street from a parking lot, this restaurant is very easy to get to, located on 50 Church Street. The restaurant has two parts; an atrium area serves as the bar space, which gives it a nice outdoor open feeling with three floors of ceiling space (but still cools you off in the AC).
Bostonist just learned that Dunkin Donuts and Absolute Vodka have become partners...No, this doesn't mean the new way to bring yourself back will be with a Dunkaccino Martini during your coffee break. It means the Jim Beam and Absolute Vodka distributors, French based Pernod Ricard SA, and U.S. based Fortune Brands Inc., purchased Allied Domecq PLC, the U.K. based parent company of Dunkin Donuts, this past April.
July is National Beer Month and Bostonist is always up for some good, cheap beer during these summer months. Prices in bars in Boston range from a low $1.50 for 16oz at Sissy K's to a ridiculously high $6.00 dollars for 16 oz at Fenway Park. We want to recommend a few spots to make the paycheck go further, since we hate spending more just to have the same amount of beer. Bostonist recently took...
To continue with the theme of sugar-packed fatty goodness...the Scooper Bowl is finally here.
