The Brickbottom artists' district in Somerville has become one of Bostonist’s favorite places to go for Open Studios. We don’t feel as pressured to be snooty as we do when checking out art at the SoWa guild. And a plate of cheap Brazilian fare is just around the corner so we won’t be spending the big bucks eating at the likes of the Butcher Shop. more ›

It looks like the Curtatone family is trying to install a little dynasty up in Somerville. According to a piece on The Somerville News blog, Mayor Joe Curtatone's sister Maria Curtatone is throwing her hat in the ring for the State Senate seat held by the late Charlie Shannon. While common sense would seem to suggest that it's good timing to run for a Senate seat in a district which encompasses much of the city that your brother is a popular mayor (and with whom you share a name), this announcement may actually signify some deepening divisions among "old time" political circles in Somerville. more ›

Bostonist has it on good authority that Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone and his wife Nancy have welcomed the newest member of the Curtatone clan. Yesterday at 3:34 P.M., Mrs. Curtatone gave birth to a 6-pound, 12-ounce baby boy at Melrose Wakefield Hospital (why not the Somerville Hospital, we wonder). Unfortunately for the baby's older brother, Cosmo, he won't have anyone to commiserate with when he's made fun of on the elementary school playgound. It seems the Mayor and his wife took the traditional route this time around, giving their newest child the good Catholic name, Joseph Christopher Curtatone. more ›

Bostonist determined on Wednesday that yes, Somerville does indeed rock! And what better way to celebrate than to hold a good, old-fashioned outdoor circus. more ›

Each year for the past 23 years, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Jewish Congress chooses a handful of mayors nationwide to travel to Israel -- all expenses paid -- and join in an international discussion with city executives from around the world. This year, Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone was one of 13 U.S. Mayor's picked to attend a conference on "Leading the 21st Century: Multiculturalism, Security, Preservation and Development." more ›

With hardly a wasted day after the sad and unexpected death of State Senator Charlie Shannon (D-Winchester) earlier this week, the political rat-race to replace him has begun. Already some local politicians have been working phones trying to feel out their chances for that seat. Interestingly, though the 2nd Middlesex District includes parts of the late Senator's hometown of Winchester, as well as Woburn, Medford, and Somerville, most of the people around whom speculation is circulating hail from the latter. more ›

Seemingly annoyed with constantly having to live in the shadow of their bigger sibling, Boston, Mayor Joe Curtatone of Somerville and Mayor Mike Sullivan of Cambridge have teamed up to bring Boston Mayor Tom Menino to his knees. Joining forces with Mitch Kates, former Professional Wrestler and current aide to Boston Mayoral-challenger Maura Hennigan, the two north-of-the-Charles Mayor's have issued a strong challenge to Menino. more ›

The Somerville Police Department has had quite a shake-up lately. For much of the last year, former Police Chief George McClean had been clashing with Mayor Joe Curtatone -- most notably over a report commissioned by the mayor which criticized the department for being disorganized and poorly led. That very public dispute eventually led to the forced resignation of Chief McClean and the Mayor's appointment of a review board to oversee drastic changes in the way department leadership is picked. more ›
