It's June. June 13. The game last night was the 61st game of 2009. But, it really could have been played in October. The last two World Series champions battled in a game the Red Sox won 5-2 in 13 innings in a game that was filled with great pitching, timely hitting and error-free defense. Bostonist is making no predictions but Boston and Philadelphia, well, hey, you saw the game. Admit it. You thought it, too. The Herald did it, too. more ›

Sheesh, Mets. The Red Sox open the gates of fabled Fenway to you and yours and how do you thank us? Storming the place with Johan Santana's arm blazing and giving Dice-K a 5-3 loss during his first game back with the Sox. Way to show your appreciation. more ›

We don't want to put any excessive pressure on the Bruins or anything, but today could be a pretty important day for the Black and Gold. If they win today during their showdown against the Rangers, they clinch the Eastern Conference title. Not only does it provide bragging rights and a healthy dose of confidence for the playoffs ("Playoffs? Don't talk to me about PLAYOFFS!"), they'd get home ice throughout Eastern Conference postseason play. We suppose you could say that it's kind of a big (epic, massive) deal, but we hope that the team takes on the challenge by lacing up the skates the same way they do every game and skating to victory the same way they've done 50 times this season. more ›

The preliminary 162 are over. The Red Sox finished their regular season with a split, got to wave farewell to the Yankees, and now can head to Anaheim with a fresh start. Well, except for the daily agony that's keeping Mike Lowell on the shelf for who-knows-long, the nagging problems with J.D. Drew, and now the news that Josh Beckett pulled a muscle and won't start 'til Game Three. Other than that, we're ready. more ›

The baseball winter meetings are over, and the Red Sox find themselves without an ace. Except for the one they have. And the Japanese guy who might yet become one. And the old cowboy back for one more year. And the two or three promising kids who might be a couple years away. But they haven't landed Johan Santana, which is either a failure (if they really were after Santana) or a success (if their... more ›

Forget for a moment the questions still lingering around the Red Sox. We know about those. Let's take a brief look at the angst-ridden article in today's LA Times about the myriad questions swirling around our first-round opponents, the AnaheimOrWhatever Angels. They don't know who's starting when (OK, neither do we). Two of their key sluggers, Vlad Guerrero and Gary Matthews, are nursing injuries and may not be 100% (hey, just like Manny!). Will their... more ›

In between the drama of a pennant race and the pressure cooker of the playoffs, comes a day like today. A day when absolutely nothing is up for grabs. Yesterday the Red Sox won and the Indians lost, guaranteeing the Red Sox the best record in the AL (they'd win a tiebreaker with Cleveland) and Fenway-advantage throughout the postseason. The win yesterday (you might want to sit down) came largely thanks to J.D. Drew, who... more ›

Dare we say things are starting to click at the right time? The Red Sox finished off Oakland with an 11-6 win. Now only a monumental collapse (look upward; no lightning) will keep the Red Sox from celebrating an AL East clinchin' party in the next day or two. The Sox smacked Oakland largely due to the bat of Mike Lowell, who collected five of his 116 RBIs (a Red Sox 3B record) on a... more ›

Well, on the bright side, Daisuke has nothing to complain about this morning in terms of getting run support. Before the last of the Blue Jays' traveling party had cleared Customs, the Red Sox had staked Dice to a 10-1 lead, the big blow courtesy of a 3-run shot by the red-hot Mike Lowell, [Editorial Insert to Whatever Front Office Types Are Reading This. There's going to be temptation this offseason to make a run... more ›

Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,... more ›

If you said the Red Sox lineup would eventually break out of its funk, you weren't alone. If you said it would be J.D. Drew and Dustin Pedroia who did their "Bash Brothers" imitation and got the runs home, please forward us tonight's lottery numbers. Terry Francona's gambit of putting Drew and Pedroia 1-2 in the lineup paid off bigtime last night, as the two combined to go 8-for-9 with 8 RBIs in the 10-2... more ›

David Letterman's warning to Matt Damon when he appeared last night on Late Night. We caught the interview in a channel flip early in the west coast Sox game. Despite the disappointment handed to us in the bottom of the 11th, it's nice to go to sleep and awake to find that the tubes have done their magic and provided you with this video. In this case it's perhaps the lowest quality video we've seen in a while – handheld cam video of a broadcast TV station*. Whatever, the clip is hometown boy Matt Damon on David Letterman's show in New York sporting a Sox jersey and bashing the Yankees. more ›

The happiest Red Sox fans around have to be the ones who stopped watching baseball around 7:30 last night. They would have seen Game 1 of the doubleheader, a 13-3 Sox rout/Home Run Derby. They would have seen the Yankees' nightmarish loss to the Mets. But most importantly, they would have been spared Game 2, in which Atlanta demolished the Sox 14-0. A wild day all around. Game One was a laugher thanks in part... more ›

The complete game is a dying art in the States. In the age of relief specialists, managers tied to pitch counts, and Papelbon, there aren't a lot of occasions when a manager wants to leave his starter in any longer than necessary. And last night, in fact, Papelbon was warming up when the Sox blew the game open in the 8th, taking a 7-1 lead and giving Terry Francona an excuse to leave Daisuke in... more ›

The NCAA final four is tonight, with Georgetown playing Ohio State at 6 pm and UCLA playing Florida at 8:47 pm. To which we say, go anyone but Georgetown! Apologies to Doc Rivers' son, Jeremiah Rivers, who plays on the team as a guard with burly center Roy Hibbert, but we can't root for the team that thumped Boston College. And the start of baseball season is tomorrow. Since the first game of baseball season... more ›

Last night, the Garden saw some serious ugly. After winning a few, Celtics fans had cause for optimism. However, they were facing the Houston Rockets, fifth in the West and fully stocked with Yao Ming. Even though the Rockets didn't exactly deliver a pitch-perfect performance, the Celtics collapsed quickly and never caught up. The final score was 111 to 80, and the Rockets made 15 three-pointers. The performance was so bad that we thought we... more ›

Nelson De La Rosa, the "world's smallest actor," passed away on Sunday at the age of 38. He may have been only two feet and four inches tall, but he was big enough to hang with the larger-than-life personalities of both Pedro Martinez and Marlon Brando. De La Rosa climbed from the schlockfest Rat Man to a role as Marlon Brando's sidekick in The Island of Dr. Moreau, and De La Rosa's character supposedly served... more ›

Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell's... more ›

Bostonist was on hand for last night's return of Pedro Martinez to the mound. To say that the environment was electric is a colossal understatement. There was one thing the people who showed up were there to see - and that's Pedro. People wanted to cheer him on the way to the bullpen to warm up, on his way back to the dugout, on his way to the mound for the bottom half of the fifth, and off the mound after getting tattooed for 8 runs (6 of which were earned - the other two we had Lastings Milledge to thank). It should not be left as a footnote to mention that Josh Beckett went out there to maintain his status as (one of) the current ace(s) and pitched his brains out. Even if Pedro brought his A game it would have been a tough night for the Mets to pull out a win. more ›

Props go out to Terry Francona (a man who really doesn't receive enough credit for the job he does in Boston) for his handling of the Coco Crisp situation. Crisp returned, and was immediately re-inserted into the starting lineup as the center-fielder, and lead-off hitter. But, it looks like 7th or 8 slot is most effective, with Youkilis at the top, and Francona has leveraged this. The Sox also have some interesting options from... more ›

The Red Sox continue to steal our hearts and build our confidence. Last night's 12 inning win over the Phillies rounded out a sweep of the series and extended the winning streak to nine. Tonight the Olde Towne Team faces the Mets for more inter-league play. In the overall standings the Sox go into the competition one game back from the Mets – who follow only the Tigers and the White Sox in the overall... more ›

Bostonist loves the fact that the Boston Globe has employed a full time arts writer to blog for them several times a day. Geoff Edgers has been doing a good job with Exhibitionist, even if they don't have comments open on the site. Today we caught a piece where Edgers points out the PORT's most pretentious art writing contest. Hilarious. There's enough pretentious art writing on the Internets for everyone to have too much of it. While it's fun to look at pretentious musings on the internets in other parts of the country it may be more fun to look at the interactive contests. Take Boston Sports Media Watch's write-like-Dan contest that challenges readers to write Dan Shaughnessy's column about the Mets match up with the Sox before he does. The world of the comic strip never fails to entertain. If Zippy and Family Circus are the cup of tea that keeps you caffeinated all afternoon might we suggest that you go check out someone who will point out the daily shortcomings and oddities that are arguably more amusing that the actual comics. Joshreads.com, or the Comics Curmudgeon as he's called, will bring you running satirical comments on every comic included in the Herald and Globe – and even those that aren’t. Expect regular appearances from the Apartment 3-G crowd and especially the Family Circus. more ›

Tonight the Red Sox are back home at Fenway for a three game series against the Yankees. They're ahead of the Yanks by a game and a half in the division. When playing the team you're on top of we all know it’s a good chance to lose ground fast or break away in a hurry. But we're riding high until the first pitch tonight. The Olde Towne Team will still be on top of the leader board out in left field for the rest of the day, guaranteed. And, we still feel like we've got the world champs, even if it's been a whole season. In order to take tonight's game and the next few in the series without a severe (and crippling) strut we're going to look back at Game 6. Yes the infamous Game 6 – played in it's entirety on RBI-Baseball for the NES. Sure it's when we fell to the Mets, but it'll help keep our ego in check as we watch the Red Sox take the field against the Yankees. more ›

Well, it looks like the Sox aren’t the only Boston sports team looking to put themselves out on a limb to get some better talent. It seems that the dismal Boston Bruins have traded their sandy colored haired team captain, Joe Thornton, to the San Jose Sharks last night in a move that shocked many hockey fans. Bostonist will admit that we don’t spend enough quality time with the NHL, thus the lack of posts... more ›

After bringing home a Superbowl title and a Worlds Series win, Boston sports teams have had an excellent year. As we grow closer to the one-year anniversary of the Reverse of the Curse, Boston sports players have been confusing the hell out of Bostonist this past week. The Patriots training camp started up today with some big gapping holes in their defensive lineup. Last week, Tedy Bruschi decided to opt out of this season... more ›

Yes, Bostonist knows its only April and we've got a long way to go this baseball season, but things are looking good for the boys so far. With the last two nights bringing victory to the Sox over the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox are currently in first place in the AL East. Sure, Baltimore is only one game behind, but the pinstriped boys from the Bronx are three games back and are feeling the... more ›
