When Josh Beckett stomped off the mound after the fourth inning, he sure looked mad about something. Perhaps Beckett was realizing that he is done pitching against Atlanta for the balance of the 2009 season. Beckett (9-3) stopped the Braves cold, again, this time with seven shutout innings, six hits and six strikeouts as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 8-2. Beckett pitched 16 scoreless innings against Atlanta this year. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Paplebon closed the game out. Both were adequate, at best, as Paplebon served up a home run to someone named David Ross, who exists and played eight games for Boston in 2008. more ›

Last night, the mixologists at Drink (348 Congress St., in Fort Point) composed an ode to the late Michael Jackson in the form of a punch. Lemon Hart 151, Batavia arrack, Coke (they didn't have Pepsi on hand, John Gertsen told us), lime, and sugar* were combined and set on fire to make the Jackson 5. The name of the beverage played on the etymology of the word "punch," allegedly the half-English bastard of the Hindi word for "five." more ›

Boston is a beer-drinking town. So if you’re new here or are just not a beer drinker (shame!) you might sit in a bar staring down fifteen brightly colored, alluring taps and find yourself utterly overwhelmed. We understand. Or, we’ll put up with it for a short period of time. more ›

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take... more ›

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will screen at 8:30 pm tonight at Union Square in Somerville. The "Carnival of the Nose" starts at 7:00. So, you don't have Police tickets? Console yourself with the smell of an Oompa Loompa! You've no doubt seen the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder (not the one with Johnny Depp doing his best Michael Jackson impression). But now Somerville is giving you the opportunity... more ›

Ok, so let's say you're more into celebrity train-wrecks than college basketball Fafarazzi has some March Madness brackets just for you. We just went through and made our picks. It's a long shot but we're hoping for some unexpected nip-slip or Woody Allen fodder to get Scarlet Johansson to take the movie division. We've got her all the way to meet, and beat, Justin Timberlake in the Final Four in order to take on K-Fed... more ›

Just what the world needs – tan mice. David Fisher, and researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital Boston have developed a lotion that inspires skin cells in mice to create melanin. The melanin caused the mice to develop a tan. The research has practical medical implications and not just cosmetic ramifications. Researchers showed that the tan may shield individuals from developing skin cancer. Tan mice resisted burning and scaring that the fair skinned mice were susceptible. more ›

Maybe it's the Michael Jackson soundtrack, maybe it's the break-dancing, but there's something about this video that urges for the uncovering of some acid wash jeans and a red leather jacket to come out of the back of the closet. North Station might be new and clean(er than other stations) but it still isn't the type of place to go dragging your body all over the floor. If this were a full on subway dancing competition, or sometime in the eighties anyway, someone would have pulled out a flattened cardboard box "dance floor" and a boombox. The eighties may be full on in the past, but it's good to know that impromptu break-dancing still happens in the subway. The judgment seems biased in the eyes of the videographer/producer – though he well executed Worm does deserve bonus points. Remember using words like spic and chino isn't good for anyone. more ›

On Saturday, the undead attacked Somerville and Cambridge, grunting "What do we want?" "BRAAAAAINS!" "When do we want 'em?" "BRAAAAAAAINS!" Zombies attempted to board the 77 bus, danced to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," and generally lurched. more ›

There’s nothing like a little (*ahem*) VB roaming around in Beacon Hill to get you going in the morning. Nothing like it, except for Bob Lobel’s sports commentary on WBZ 4’s Sports Final. Well, OK, there’s something a bit more idiotic about those live on location spots that VB has used to spice up Fox 25’s morning newscast. Bostonist has been known on a number of occasions to sit in front of the TV and... more ›
