Michael Ryder's goal just 1:59 into overtime enabled the Bruins to take a 5-4 win away from Montreal and tie the first-round playoff series at 2-2. Ryder scored another goal in the second period and assisted on a third-period goal to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Bruins clinched the Northeast division title with a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers yesterday. John Lackey was lacking last night and Texas' powerful lineup took advantage of him as they earned a 12-5 win over the Red Sox, now a surprising 0-2 on the season.
The Bruins are unbeatable as they head into tonight's game in Ottawa. Literally. The Black and Gold rides a five-game winning streak into the game, all on the road, including a recent victory over Ottawa. The team's impressive road play, 21-7-4, has Boston looking up at the second seed in the East. The Bruins last victim was Edmonton, by a 3-2 score, on Sunday. Michael Ryder, Nathan Horton, and Rich Peverley got the goals in the win. Tuukka Rask (8-11-1) has three wins in a row in his starts and had 15 saves against Edmonton.
And so does Youk. But we'll get to him.
The Bruins were down 2-0. In the long-ago regular season, that meant you could grab the shovel out of the closet and start digging right then and there. But the playoff Bruins are a completely different entity, and when they started the third period in a two-goal hole, they nodded grimly and went to work.
A friend stopped into Bostonist Cambridge Sports HQ midway through the Bruins game yesterday. We were all excited and said, "You just missed it! The Bruins just scored two goals in a row!" The friend, no slouch, asked, "But are they winning?" C'est les 2009-2010 Bruins in a nutshell. The answer at the time was yes, but it turned into no, as the B's fell to the LA Kings in a 4-3 shootout.
It was exactly and totally unlike last season. This time, the #1 seed fully lived up to its poisition, while the #8 seed meekly submitted. Last year, the Bruins were #8, and came out of the series loss with unbounded optimism for the future. This year, the Canadiens were #8, and they're just done.
Right after Christmas, you may remember, the Celtics struggled for a couple weeks, got their feet under them, then went on a blowout binge. Is that happening to the Bruins now? Sure looks like it.
Both our local winter teams were on the road yesterday. Let's join them, in spirit at least, because anywhere on earth must be more pleasant and hospitable than this poorly-located snow-choked city we call home.
