For the longest time, Team Robespierre was one of those things in the ever-crowded musicverse that this Bostonist never took the opportunity to look into. Whenever he'd look at concert listings for an impending trip to New York, their name always came up. But what were they? An underground catchphrase that only the uber-scene folks know the correct definition of and are able to use it in a sentence? A hipster kickball team that constantly put on shows in Brooklyn? more ›

Clear your schedule for Sunday evening, because Brooklyn trio The Antlers will make the Middle East Upstairs the only worthy destination for the night. Once a project composed of bedroom recordings by Peter Silberman while a student at NYU, the indie-rock group has taken off since Silberman received his diploma. After self-releasing Hospice earlier this year, The Antlers have experienced a wave of critical acclaim, and one that only looks to get bigger when Frenchkiss digitally re-releases the album next Tuesday. more ›

Peelander-Z at the Middle East

What does one do after attending a once-in-a-lifetime show by a renowned artist? How can you go back to the all-things-as-usual show when you've heard and witnessed the delights of a skillfully-performed, groundbreaking gig? This was the conundrum Bostonist faced since Wednesday's excellent Dan Deacon show at the Middle East. After a stunning set, where do you go from there? Well, you can only go up. In this case, to the planet Peelander. more ›

"Boooring," an audience member shouted during a break in Stupid Party's set. Ironic and "humorous" intentions behind said comment aside, it's pretty clear that the evening's entertainment isn't for everyone, perhaps least of all the skinny-pant wearing, unflaggingly frozen-still denizens who descended on the Middle East Upstairs on a breezy Sunday evening. Though normal circumstances would've seen a mosh pit form in the center of the room for local Minor Threat-enthusiasts Libyans and a whole lot of headbanging for the stoner-thrash of Brooklyn's Stupid Party, the crowd was barely moved to make even the dimmest of comments. What on earth brought the hapless hipsteratti to Cambridge this evening? Last year's blog-darlings with the Pitchfork seal-of-approval, Vivian Girls. more ›

Few acts in hip-hop's young guard come more correct than Berkeley, CA crew The Pack. Roiling, minimalist beats, raps about partying and sneakers, and a whispered menace that keeps you off guard: it's like degree zero of the art form. Sounds great on record (or Myspace), but can they rock an audience? Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, 7:00 pm, $12/$14. more ›

Strap yourselves in for the Brattle Theatre's very first Python-a-Thon. In honor of the arrival of Spamalot, they'll show And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (duh), and Monty Python and the Meaning of Life. Showtimes from the Brattle Theatre. more ›

Thursday night was cold and unappealing, but the warm sounds of Brown Bird, Geoff Farina, and Tunng made the Middle East Upstairs more than inviting. From Brown Bird's three-piece string set (cello, guitar, and guitar--or sometimes banjo) to Farina's solo strumming to Tunng's multi-instrumentalist mashups, the show was remarkably enjoyable throughout. Read on for a little more info on the live musical stylings of these three groups. more ›

Tunng With Geoff Farina (Karate, Secret Stars) and Brown Bird Middle East Upstairs Thursday, October 25 $10 advance / $12 doors // 18+ Yes, you do, and the band sounds as smooth as a tongue, rippled with tastebuds for (super)sonic texture. Though the name might suggest a Norwegian origin, Tunng actually started in a Soho (that's London, not New York) basement, with electronic guru Mike Lindsay and singer-songwriter Sam Genders simply playing around in... more ›

Mary Timony's brand of lo-fi indie rock is well-suited to today's dreamy pop scene, but the sassy strut takes us back to the 90s/Liz Phair/Save Ferris days - now and then at the same time. more ›

For us it marks the first of many outdoor events that will happen this summer, and it's Memorial Day... more ›

This week the music world turns its gaze to the party they call SXSW. A number of local bands are hitting the scene in hopes that it will propel them to some worldwide tour – or at least help them get out of that "garden level" apartment in Medford. While some eyes turn south to Texas where an immigration debate runs wild the US immigration policy has taken a toll on the local concert... more ›

After the total lunar eclipse spiced up the night sky this past weekend we've got enough of the visuals. This week we're committed not to go see live music but to go hear live music. This week we're welcoming a few new contributors to the list, have a listen, will ya? Monday 3/5 Badly Drawn Boy It's okay to admit to liking British singer-songwriter Damon Gough, aka Badly Drawn Boy. He may write lyrics... more ›

We're thinking of format. No, not like the formatting changes that WERS just made to their programming. More like readability of the weekly picks. It's fall now, and since we never really get around to spring cleaning in the spring, maybe we'll get to it in the fall. If you've got suggestions drop them in an email to music at bostonist.com or just right in the comments. But be on the lookout – this... more ›

Fall seems to have set in, at least for now. the temperatures are dropping and people all over the metro have been forced to put their flip-flops away for some more sensible footwear.
